Your prefer OGG compressing rate?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Your prefer OGG compressing rate?

I want to convert my in-game wave music (stereo, 16bit, 44.1KHz) to OGG.

Waht's the best size-quality balance level?
(10 to 1 automatic or specify bitrate manually)

Or your prefer for game packaging?

depends on the music, and on taste..

Complex orchestral requires higher bitrates than a few instruments playing together, the more instruments, effects, whatever, the 'more', the higher the bitrate.

For most sounds, I use a quality rating of 0. It seems to work quite well.

I sue whatever quality rating it is that comes out at an average of 128KBps. I tested every popular (and unpopular) codec at an average 128 and OGG sounded the best across my entire music collection (from classical to drum&bass).

Now I've got an iPod, I've got a whole lot of encoding from the originals to do again :-/

3, which equates to ~112kbps on a 44khz stereo sample, with no real noticable quality loss at all.

Low quality releases (such as transferring tunes over the internet to ppl with low bandwidth) get a -1, which equates to ~48kbps... the quality loss is noticable, but doesn't affect the enjoyment of the music like mp3s quality loss does. Mp3s tend to have trebbly artifacts, whereas ogg tends to cut out the treble at low bitrates...

Hmmm... I think 3 is a better option, Q2(96k) seems to touch the margin of noticable loss.

Thanks everyone.

For a game, I think the quality would also depend on where it is played. If its menu music, imo, the quality should be higher than most music found while playing.

98k was used for my games and is pretty good. If you wanted a bit better, go for 128k, but file size will increase of couse.

Perhaps a better discussion would be whether we think we should still offer games for dial-up. These days DSL or cable is quite common, there're even combi-subscriptions with phone/tv/dsl in one. If there's speed and no additional costs, then I think the occasional download can be much larger, hence the ogg-quality can rise.

Otoh, I don't know these figures. NL is quite modern, not quite into the 100MBit numbers I sometimes see in certain countries in the far east, but 2..4Mbit is quite common.

I prefer to use short loops instead of going too low with the quality as you can spare much more and still enjoy the result. I wouldn't be too optimistic about that you can use much bigger files yet. In germany you still have to support ISDN (8-16kb/s) users for the clients although most of the users use DSL1 (128kb/s).

It still would be nice to have a non brainer tracker and softsynth support.

yeah 1min or so loops at 96k still around 1Mb, so how many you want to put in your game? Add in graphics and sound fx and game can go over 10Mb. There have been many discussions on Indiegamer forums about the optimum download size.

If I can track mod/xm or find a tracker to pay... I'd rather to do that :|

It seems trackers are rare now...

I'm a tracker! But my songs start at 30GB orso, an ogg would be the smallest solution then :P

Tho I could also do the more classic formats with little samples, it's soundwise less up-to-date however.

CS_TBL... don't be so sure about what is available... The majority of Aus stiull runs on dialup... and most ppl who have switched to broadband would be getting a 256 or 512kbit connection. 1.5mbit is prohibitively expensive... adsl2+ at a rate of up to 24mbit has only just arrived and isn't available in many places yet. Add to this the fact that most people are subscribing to plans that have rediculously low bandwidth limits.

New Zealand has it even worse from what I hear.
