Norton Antivirus 2002 Crashing Windows XP?

Is it possible that NAV 2002 could crash WindowsXP Home as since reinstalling the OS after numerous crashes to the infamous bsod I have installed a different antivirus program and all seems well (touch wood ;) I know lots of people have niggles about Norton but has anyone here experienced similar problems with it as me?

I have only had problem with NAV 2002 with XPSP2... no crashes, but the scripting system used by the configuration screen won't work. The only way I have gotten 2002 to work on XPSP2 is by installing on XP or SP1, then fully updating, then installing SP2.

On the other hand, NAV2003 works fine from the start and doesn't use the 2004 engine (obviously), so it's still actually pretty good.

Symantec does the same thing and cannot update at work and they have it set up so I can't cut it off the disk or uninstall it... Avast for me ASAP!!!

I`m actually using Avast now too and can highly recommend it.

It's strange, I'm still using an old version of NAV 7.61, still works fine.

It may not even be NAV but it does seem strange how now it`s been removed from my system all seems well. I never even suspected it until recently but it is the one thing that I constantly install first after a reinstall of Windows so it occured that it may be causing all of my recent crashes. I always assumed it was my NVidia drivers although these are far from perfect either in my experience.

Last stable nVidia drivers imo was 81.xx... also make sure you Disable the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service. =]

NAv has the dubious distinction of being one of those programs that behaves worse than the virusses its supposed to protect you from...

It's mindboggling how much problems NAV can cause while at the same time charging a subscription fee, unlike the FREE virus scanners Avast & AVG.

Never had a problem with NAV 2003 and older. AVG on the other hand has caused me BSODs and Avast! likes to block access to my router config. They all have problems.

It's the same with firewalls... only one firewall has never caused me any probs... Windows Firewall... but that's probably because it doesn't really do anything.
