PayPal / IPN / PDT?

Hi,

I currently use ShareIt but want to move to PayPal for selling as they are loads cheaper.

There seems to be 3 options, AUTO RETURN, IPN and PDT.

Has anyone had any experience with these?

AUTO RETURN seems to be the easiest to setup but could possibly be easily abused.

On seconds thoughts perhaps not.

I never completely understood how this things working..

I had a bit of an issue with paypal last year, where it took me 6 weeks to gain access to my money.

They do investigate large money transfers- so don't bet on anything over about £1000 being quick to access.


I should point out that this isn't really a problem- but It did annoy me :)

IPN works just fine and not to hard to implement. Paypal has plenty of script examples (PHP, VBS) to get you started. My customers appreciate the instant access to download products immediately after purchasing.

ive used paypal since they opened with no problems, your best bet is to give it a shot that site is most likely just cry babies who didnt get their way.

I've only had one (relatively small) problem with Paypal in over 5 years usage. I tend to agree with ckob's sentiments about that "Paypalsucks" site.

ShareIt = 5% + EUR 2.95
BMT Micro = 9.5%
Ebay = 3.4% + 20p (or 0.35 EUR)

More expensive than a packet of Walkers crisps too, which is about as relevant as a comparison with Ebay. Ebay are not payment processors. Any payment processing is charged separately.

I've had no problems with paypal whatsoever, The most I have spent on it has been $600 but money transfer of over $2000 with currency conversion and no actual product purchased.

I suppose paying for services did set off alarm bells judging by his experiences at his end. I think paypal is a handy option to have for sales as a lot of people like to use it, and they don't need their credit cards around at the time, they are better known by people that don't use computers much. People usualy trust what they are familiar with, so you may pick up a few extra purshases having the option, but I wouldn't use them exclusively.

Of course, if you really don't want to use PayPal but don't want to miss out, then use a payment processor who uses them and pays you in a different manner. Both Plimus and RegNow accept PayPal payments. I can't recall offhand whether either of them offer payments to you without using PayPal, but I'm pretty sure they do.

BMT Micro also accepts PayPal payments.
And it handles the download link automatically like Share*It.

Personally I find PayPal annoying to use for purchases, what with the bank account setup and all. I much prefer to just use my credit card. I would agree with the advice to go with a payment processor that accepts PayPal.

Just remember that there's a lot of people who can't use paypal because they live in countries not covered with paypal. You may miss on sales if you turn exclusively to paypay.

We use Paypal IPN to automate the fee, subscription payment and invoicing on indiegamebusiness.com . Be aware that the IPN system is quite complex and if you don't know your way around .php and databases then you'd be better off using some other payment processor.

You might also want to consider that using PayPal you will be liable for sales taxes where appropriate.

On PayPal's defence it in certainly invaluable for "buying" whereby PayPal charges straight to your creditcard. I can however imagine it not being very safe storing funds with them (but like I wouldn't trust any online bank company tbh)

My account with PayPal though is always at 0 UKP :)

I, like Enay, have Paypal charge directly from my creditcard, and my account at Paypal is 0..

and I must say that using Paypal over several year, and I've never had any problems with them.. :)

I've been using Paypal for 5 years without any problems on Paypal's side. I also use 2checkout.com for customers that don't want to or can't use paypal. 2checkout has a $50 sign up fee and charges only slightly more than paypal.

I have tranfered over USD $10,000.00 via paypal to my bank account and never once had an issue.
