USB 2.0 Question

If I`m using a wireless broadband connection via a USB 1.0 port will it make any difference if I upgrade it to a USB 2.0 one? I`m curious as when I install my wireless package it tells me that the device can perform faster. Would I actually see a difference in the speed of my connection though or is it a waste of time upgrading for no reason, will using USB 2.0 make a marked difference over USB 1.0 in this situation?

yes. 1.1 is really slowwwwwww compared to 2.0 (Its like 13 times faster)

You can get a 2.0 board for under £15 easy, so its not a big expence. (Or borrow one to looksee first?)

also depends on how fast your broadband is... if you have a 1.2mbit pipe then no you probably won't see much difference. If you have a 6mbit pipe you MIGHT see a difference... and if you have anything higher than 12mbit then yes, you will see a difference.

Usb 1.1 basicly is 12Mbitsec (1.5MBsec), but no one device ever exceeds half of that,so if as Kanati said your connection is slower than 6Mbitsec........

Note USB 2.0 specifications include three ratings: Low Speed 1.5 Mb/sec (for mouse or keyboard), Full Speed 12 Mb/sec (like USB 1.1), and Hi-Speed 480 Mb/sec. It needs to actually say "Hi-Speed". If the spec just says USB 2.0 or USB 2.0 Full-Speed, it is probably not faster than USB 1.1. If buying now, look for USB 2.0 Hi-Speed in both motherboards and scanners

I dont know how important this is nowadays tho.

After reading this advice I decided to email my internet provider to ask their opinion on the situation, this is the response I received.

"I can confirm that upgrading your USB ports to 2.0 would not make a difference to the connection speed. I would recommend that you ignore this message."

I`m now a little unsure what to do. If I can borrow one to test I will but I`m not sure if it`s worth the bother buying one otherwise.

Do you run a network or is it just literally internet connection sharing? If it's the latter, I would agree with your ISP that it's unlikely to make a difference ( unless as Kanati says you're on a >6 meg connection.

Just really for my internet connection which is around 6.5meg.

If its 6.5meg Bit, then your ok with 1.1 (But I would still get a 2.0)
But if its 6.5meb Byte (52Meg bit, then you need a 2.0)

I would just get an ethernet router instead ;)
