File bad within a .zip?

Has anyone seen a problem with .zip files where a single file is not transferred properly?

I have someone sending me a .zip file with some scripts (for 3dsMax) and one of them continually comes up as only 1 byte in size. He swears the file size is 500 some bytes, and that he can unzip it on his end to verify.

I have tried unzipping in Winzip, Stuffit, and WinRar, all with the same results. I have also tried downloading the .zip directly from the web, not going through email.

Anyways, I find it very odd that a single file within a .zip is getting screwed, and was hoping someone might have an idea.

Not heard of this - usually the entire zip gets reported as corrupt. Get him to send the stuff to you again in a .rar, maybe?

OR tell him not to attempt HIGH COMPRESSION and just go with default.

If the file is in use it may not compress...

Windows XP?

I had the same trouble sending a ZIP file containing an EXE to somebody - everything but the EXE arrived safely. I can't remember the exact cause but something in either Windows or another bit of software was 'quarantining' the executable.

Perhaps a similar thing is happening with the script files that are going missing?

Most likely he is zipping with a different algorithm. For example, the very latest version of winzip has an optional algorithm that (afaik) can only be decompressed by the same version of winzip.

Problem solved.

Apparently the zipping was being done through a script as well, and it was screwing up on that end.

Now I can stop pulling out my hair trying to figure out what the heck was going on.

For a troublesome 500 bytes - why even zip it? Brain-lock?
