Was thinking of joining up to get rid of some old stuff I have that someone might appreciate rather than trying to sell it on ebay and failing to. I was wondering what sort of cool things any of you have seen crop up. Also is it like first come first served, so you get an email and reply ASAP to get it or what? Any experiences? Thanks...

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Anyone a member of freecycle.org? I've not used it yet but I had a quick scan of the site, the other day. You can, apparently, get some very good stuff from freecycle - all for nowt. The good thing is, anything you give away, the person comes around to collect it. I would imagine it does operate on a first-come-first-served basis, as no money is involved.
I saw the site but you can't read any messages to judge if it's for you or not.
I tend not to join secret(ive) societies; just a life experience thing really.
It's a great shame they chose that route, as the underlying principal is highly commendable.

I'm joined up with Freecycle - but being on the other side of the planet, that's perhaps less than useful information. :o)
I've neither claimed nor offered anything yet, but watching the emails come through it's amazing what people will take if it's for free - for example, half-used bottles of shampoo, open jars of condiments, half-eaten hotdogs...

I have been a member of the Parker, Aurora, and Highlands Ranch Colorado (USA) Freecycles for a couple of years now, and use them all the time.
Sometimes it can be hard to keep up with the emails (there can be a lot), but I have received and given away quite a bit.
Basically, you put your ad in, and people contact you back by email. You pick whichever respondent you want to give something to. There might be a dozen people who respond, and you choose one of them. You then email the group to tell them the item is promised, then again when it is taken.
I have given away some pretty strange things. For example, I have 45 Ponderosa Pine trees in my yard, and have to pick up 2 bags full of pine cones each time I mow. I thought, "hmm, would somebody want these?" and it turns out a lot of people do...
I've given away...
wheelbarrows
firewood
computer
and many other things...
I've received...
laptop bag (very nice one!)
blender
pots/pans
etc...
The downside - occasionally somebody will say they want something, but never show up. I always give it to one of the other respondents when that happens.
