How do you dedicated yourself

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/How do you dedicated yourself

How do you manage to dedicate yourself to a game to fully pull it through from start to finish, release it, and advertise it? Not neccesairly a commercial game.

Patience, perseverance, be honest with yourself, don't try to do it all in isolation, let there be spaces in your development time, have a cool idea, don't take it too seriously.

just have a split personality, whenever i feel like quiting i hear another voice telling me not to.

Money.

(Well at least its an honest answer).

If I'm being honest, I've never found it terribly hard. I'm a stubborn son of a bitch, and I don't like to be beaten.

Start something you know you can finish.

I have to agree. I just make sure that my games suit my limited spans of time. To me, a game should be something simply that you play when you have a chance.I have very limited developement time so I make games that I can pick up and program for maybe 10 minutes on a lunch break. I have found that shmups (space shooters) are perfect for this. Simply put, the game should have a decent completion period for my abilities/schedule.

Gun Ranger X has taken months since I work 40+ hours a week. Last year, I could have banged this out in 2 weeks. I'm totally fine with making smaller scale games I find no shame in that. Many times, I will let the computer make levels for me, this seems to work very well as long as I accomodate for randomly generated problems. I just like to write the rules and let the computer do the generating.

I'm with Gabriel ... plus I just plain enjoy it.

If there's one other thing I can add. There's not much that gives me more pleasure than watching people have fun playing something I made. Keeping that in mind ... a group of people just having a blast with something I created actually keeps me going sometimes.

I watch most people around here starting and never finishing games so I think:-
"There's no way I'm gonna be like all those LOSERS!!!!!" :)

Infact if I knew I wasn't gonna finish I'd never even bother to start.
