R* Successfully Defends GTA Strip Club Lawsuit

Allrighty, before you wonder why is this interesting here's the interesting part:

Read this over at Gamespot couple days ago...it just amazes me how many lawsuits poor R* had to suffer through ever since it came out with GTA3 on the PS2...

Regarding the interesting part, it still gives me the feeling that even if you parody in a sense, the original creators of whatever it is you parodied still have a means of right of complaint.

If GTA hadn't been a huge success I bet noone would be even trying to sue them.

Don't cry for RockStar. They couldn't have paid for better advertising.

Personally I couldn't care less about R* and understand that success lures lawsuits... and that R* got a load of free advertizing now just like when they had the hot coffee thingy going on.

But the outcome of this "battle" is clarified rules (by the law) what we (developers) can do in our little games and that's a good thing. Not that anyone would have sued us because we don't have money but now they (and we) know that it would be useless anyway.

I love R*. How many people have actually won lawsuits against them? They're like, invincible.

I feel R* had lost the touch with GTA: SA anyway. GTA 3 was just a fun action game, while GTA:SA feels like a chore with all the stuff you have to keep doing to stay fit and whatnot.

I suspect the lawyers in R*'s employ do not work for free.

They cost less than any marketing campaign that would have brought the exposure that hot coffee did.

It's a lot of "free" advertising both for Rockstar and the strip club.

For example, I had never heard of the strip club before...

IIRC the lady who bought her grandson a copy thinking it just contained innocent swearing, violence and drug abuse, and not sexual content, won a hefty sum.



Unlikely. Hot Coffee was all over the gaming press, but was barely talked about in the main papers. Everyone who reads the gaming press knows about GTA anyway. That's not an effective marketing campaign. Besides, Take Two's share price is the lowest it's been for years. Sucks if you had shares in TTWO before the scandal broke.

So, violence, swearing and drug abuse are fine, but sex is just too offensive?! Classic! :/

P.S. Am I the only one that has no idea what this 'hot coffee' thing is you're all refering to? Heh, not surprising really, as I've never played the game and very rarely read game mags. :P

I don't consider a settlement to be winning... although I'm sure they got more than they expected, or deserved...

Well I loved CARMAGEDDON which was wimped out in Europe with robots and zombies!!! In the USA you could really make those Joggers and Grandmas FLY!!! ;)

As a side note: If any of you have ever driven in Houston rush hour you may have the feeling that CARMAGGEDON was used as a Drivers Ed training tool... I am not all that sure it wasn't!
