EVE Online

Hey guys,

I just Eve online yesterday. Spent about 4 hours just doing the tutorials. Anybody have any advice for a newbie like me. If you want to find me in the game, my handle is Rexx Thunder.

Find a corp very soon! They should teach you the basics (how to earn some money, the do's and dont's, how to work with insta-bookmarks etc..)

If you have the luck and find a large corp, they probably have paid jobs for you. Better than mining for ages.

Even if you're after mining, learn how to work with instajumps quick, it's a huge timesafer. Search their forums for tutorials on this.

my advice is be careful not to spend too much time playing Eve. It looks immersive which can lead to a lot of your time spent playing it. I too like playing games and probably spent too much time playing SHADES (on a 300 baud acoustic coupler modem!) Those were the days.

I stopped playing EVE mainly cause after some months it felt like doing a job instead of playing. Beside that, it's a great game that differs from most of the MMOG's out there. Eve's PvP is the best in MMOG's I ever played.

But: Playing MMOGs != Doing something useful != Social life

Craig, I don't like to sound like a teacher or else, but read my advice only based on my own painful experience:

*Control your time playing, compare this to other activities you're usually doing!
*Play ONLY if you got time to spend for pleasure. Ignore schedules from others (guilds, events etc..), if they're against your own personal schedule.
*Ususally you can't save&exit in a MMOG. But when you're playing and something nice happens around you (friends visiting etc.), exit immediately no matter how much you'll loose in the current battle/instance/activity (better: you're feeling a loss, though it's virtual!). This is the hardest point, but just press the button and close it!

*Remember: This games can turn into a drug! Believe it or not, it's true. I went through this personally and almost lost my partner to a game. I never thought this can be possible before that day :(
Now, beeing sensible for this topic I'm shocked how many folks around me show symptoms...sure, everything can turn into a drug. The problem with MMOG's is they pretend to be social and communicative. In fact, they aren't.

Conclusion: Know the risks & avoid them so you're save to play and have fun;)

Nah, I don't play games enough to get that immersed. I play probably on average 1 hours of games a week. Well, not this week due to EVE but, I don't know how much I'll be into it. The game is kind of slow, plus I like dating a lot better then games.

MMOs can steal your life... I spent 2 years of highschool addicted to Ultima Online....

I spent all my free time playing.... every moment.. No homewrok... no friends.. nothing like that...

And I spent all day in school planing out what I was going to do that night in the game... Slept every other day, and then, only for 4-6 hours...


Ahh.. those were the days... I miss UO.
