HL3?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/HL3? On a first view i would say this looks distracting too pseudo realistic to me. It's still not real but so much that it looks a bit boring. Like those myst adventures with some videoactors in it...not my style.
Is there some kind of joke in this I don't see, its obviously a lie that it's an engine for HL3...

Thanks, Fred. For a while there....

:)
Damn you Fred for ruining my fun...! anyways, I went for it too at first. Gfx is getting so close real that soon basically anything is possible.
hey... are you guys trying to out do my Guess The Engine series...

I saw those already. Part of the reason the pictures look weird is because everything is in sharp detail.
Apparently you can accomplish this by, if I remember correctly, closing the lens aperature down to the size of a pinhead and using a really long exposure.

Personally i would hope ppl would finally get enough of the near photo-realistic 3d scenes. If I want realism, ill go outside.
It's about time we went back to actually being creative.

hear hear Jim T!
i dunno Jim... there's a lot to be said for this type of photorealism in games and virtual reality applications...
... i mean, sure you can go outside and experience vr in it's purest form... but can ya go to Russia, and go down under the streets and experience this first hand... what's the chance of that...
...plus, the virtual way would be a lot less expensive for me... since i live almost half a world away.
i almost wish this were a scene from a game engine... this would be cool... so cool...
all you need left to do is add the VR headset...

And the VR gloves.....seriously....what is the frickin delay on these things? Its not like we don't have the processing power to run it anymore....
Neuro, I think it's because our mind isn't as easily tricked as we thought, and people get nausiated when using it because the update frequency when moving your head is too low.
Other people know more than me though, but this is what I think I heard.

that's true... about the nausea... the early ones that i saw were a bit slow... that's what i think causes it...
but surely nowadays the machines can pump out enough pixels to keep and 8 x 6 set of VR eyeglass screens updated fast enough to give at least 30 fps... 15 would do...

The problem with the photorealism is that when you have it visually you also expect the rest to work much more realistically. That's the point where abstraction wins over photorealism. Pharao's Curse works with pixelgraphics but it would be pain to play it in photorealism. At least that's the way i'm conditioned.. ;O)
Hah that reminds me of that i wanted to play a round or H.E.R.O. this week! :O)

Well it doesn't have to be photorealistic. Even a simple VR cartoonish world would be just fine by me. I recall when Doom1 came out, there were numerous cases of it causing nausea among players - I never had it with Doom 1 but did get slightly "dizzy" when I first played Wolfenstien 3D. But for the most part, everyone adjusted to it and FPSs have been advancing until today.
These days, there a lot of talk about "immersiveness" in games in which it suppose atempts to make you feel like your in the game....but staring at a flat screen can only do so much. But when you throw on a VR headset and allow you to actually look around, it'll be like you're there.... I recall the earlier VR headsets had really small eye screens. But if they increase the size a bit as to remove that binocular-like feeling to it, just imagine the surrealness of it.
I dunno....just a thought. I was hoping 12 years ago after the big buzz on VR, that by the mid 2000s, we should have so really cool VR stuff going on. Looks like I'll just have to keep on dreamin......

i remember also getting dizzy playing it... but it think that was because i played it for 12 hours straight...
me and my kid over an rs232 null modem cable... i'll never forget that night...
that's what really got me into 3D gaming... now it's time though for the experience to get a lil richer... a lil more compelling...
VR is next gen... if one of the console makers had've been smart enough to add it to their new machines, they would've cleaned up...

it is nice but i would find it hard to play a game with all that detail. so close to real that it makes feel even faker
i perfer stuff like Metroid Prime, sure the poly count may not be the highest but it has great visuals that only add to the experience and does not distract you from the Space Pirate with the energy cannon firing at you

i understand where you are coming from... but as far as i'm concerned... if that were a scene from a real game offered today, i'd already have bought it...
... and be playing it now, instead of typing this reply to a thread which will dissapear into the ether in a few hours time.
:)

i am just programming now, i played for hours already for today
and i would most likely get a game with graphics that good and not stop playig it as long as it was good and not expensive

OMG! Ok thats all I can say... Must need a terabyte of memory to support that at ANY decent frame rate...
Rook, you did read the entire thread right?
you could make a scene like that using a ambient occluder shader to give the global illumination look of the lighting. I think its quite possible to do that with a fairly modern card like a 6600 with PS 3.0
These look more like concept art for an underground tunnel...
