Army Men games - 3D or 2D?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Army Men games - 3D or 2D?

Has anyone here ever played them? I used to all the time - especially Army Men 2. I'm really curious as to what they were made in; 2D or 3D. I really can't tell. I'm pretty sure it's 2D like Starcraft, but then how did they design their level/map system?

Hope someone can help me out here. Thanks.

By the way, you can download the 30 minute trail of the full game here: http://uk.download.games.yahoo.net/t_25oa_ukca/6_97/Action/Army-Men-II.html

If you go into the "data" folder once you're done playing, you'll see lots of scripts and map files. Maybe that will help determine it?

Edit: I'm pretty sure now that it's a 2D game with 3D renders.

I have played one of the games and from what I remembered it was 3D looking. It was a long time ago though.

Going from the screenshots, looks like they used layers of bitmaps, the usual layer you walk on, and a layer that displays on top of figures (like walking behind a tall object) , and a seperate file that gets loaded in with the map that contains the information of legit walking paths & collision borders.

The original Army Men was a tile-set game I believe, then after that was the barrage of utter crap full-3d Army Men games that 3D0 drove into the ground....

Great, thanks a bunch Genexi2 :D

I helped make Armymen RTS :) On PC and PS2. The PC version is pretty good fun with multi-player and there is a fair amount of variety in it. Its mainly aimed at quick and simple RTS gameplay - so its not some crazy C&C clone. Its a fun RTS set in a house ;) ... I enjoyed making it, and my kids and myself still enjoy playing it (even though its now about 5 yrs old :).

Wow, that's awesome Grover :D

What was your job? Was there anyone you worked with that used to work at 3D0? Tell me more!

I worked at Pandemic Studios for that one :) Great bunch of guys. I was the engine PS2 programmer and PC programmer (although some of my art made it in - the flamethrower animations are mine :) ). We knocked off both versions with 11 ppl, in 12 months - very brilliant team (Most of the dudes from Dark Reign and BattleZone were in it!).

As for 3D0 - hehe they were only marketing ppl that were involved, and annoying ppl at that. Very strict on their art IP. Pity they pretty much died straight after our game was released - I think we were the last one to get published by them.

Since then (2001) have worked on all sorts of other gear :)

Damn that's too bad :(
