Naked War Website is UP

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Naked War Website is UP

The site is up and open to the public. We're doing a 'soft' launch at the moment, no PR yet other than posting this on a couple of forums.

http://www.naked-war.com

The software is free to download and you get a free credit if you register on our forum. You can use that credit to challenge another registered player. If you purchase credits you can challenge anyone via their email address.

If you send a challenge to 'Anyone' (no quotes) then it gets posted on the site and will be picked up by a registered player. Or feel free to challenge some bloke called JPickford.

Oooooh cool - I shall go and visit in a moment John,

IPete2

Looks brilliant, I can't wait to play this. Pity most of my friends are on macs! But I'm sure I'll find someone to play with. I think the email nature of this will make it a big hit.

Surely indie-game of the year. Nice one.

Looks bute m8, nice one.

Hi,

John, I downloaded NW. It started in windowed 1024/768 and so I went and changed to full screen. And saved and exited.

When restarted the game is still in windowed mode, but the window is positioned with half of it to the left of the screen. The display is however only of the "left" part of the display. (Ie all the text and I assume options are positioned as if the right screen border is in fact the screen centre) The means that the options are no longer available, because, as I said I only have the left part of the screen.

For example the text at the top is. "NOT LO" and then half a G, then the right screen edge.

I dont know where else to post these for you

The support forums are here:

http://www.zee-3.com/forums/index.php

Try deleting the file config/config.txt and starting over. Strange one that. Try a different resolution to see if that makes a difference.

Looks very polished :)

Maybe you should do what Gollop done and release it to mags so people pay you to play it via your servers.

I don't know what the Gollops did, but our software is freely distributable so we could theoretically put it on magazine covers etc.

There any reason why your recommended system requirements are a bit outrageous?

Just curious is all, the min specs sound good for your target audience, I cant picture any casual gamers that have a system with less then 1ghz of a CPU these days, or an onboard vid card that can keep the thing running.

The minimum specs reflect the specs needed to run the game. I'm always working on optimising.

Ahhh. The stupid max options thing "Looks" like an accept options. (This was the reason for my above problem). I had clicked the little thumbs up icon. And then save and exit.

[Surly you know what the Gallops did? When they lost the contract for freedom ridge (Ufo Aftershock), they needed money quick, so realesed a webturn-based version of LaserSquad, then let anyone publish the Gameengine, and made money by provideing a WebGame service]

Hi John.

Looks absolutely sensational. Congratulations and well done!
Excellent website too.

On a slightly different note, I've just been reading the FAQ at http://www.naked-war.com/hq/faq.php and noticed that "Challenge" is spelt "Challange" in several places.
(sorry to be pedantic - but it reduces the brilliance of the website a little bit).

No, pedantry is appreciated. We're sorting out these errors as fast as we can.

I hadn't heard about that. I don't think it really fits into what we are planning though.

Nice website, excellent looking game.

I think a link to this game should be posted whenever the "I need shaders", "I need DX9 capabilites" threads appear.

It definately shows what Blitz3D is capable of. No one can argue that it doesn't look the business.

I honestly hope it does really really well and brings Zee-3 a pile of cash in. All the best with it :)

> I think a link to this game should be posted whenever the "I need shaders", "I need DX9 capabilites" threads appear.

shaders? i see nothing that looks like fake shaders.

cheerful looking game though.
one critique: i hate the stripes on the ground.

No, pedantry is appreciated. We're sorting out these errors as fast as we can.

Okay then...

The desktop icon for Naked War is just the standard Blitz icon - is this intentional?
Also, on the installation of NW, one of the screens says "NakedWar" instead of "Naked War".

Man, I'm a pest aren't I?

> I think a link to this game should be posted whenever the "I need shaders", "I need DX9 capabilites" threads appear.

He means you don't need shaders to make neat games. Good luck with this, you two.

ahh right, ok Sledge. cheers. :)

>The desktop icon for Naked War is just the standard Blitz
>icon - is this intentional?

Well I decided to leave it as there seems to be no way to change the icon without hacking the .exe. I'd rather not mess with stuff like that. Besides, if it gives a bit of exposure to BRL then that's great.

>Also, on the installation of NW, one of the screens
>says "NakedWar" instead of "Naked War".

My bad. Will fix.

Well I decided to leave it as there seems to be no way to change the icon without hacking the .exe

Errm, Ive just changed it by selecting it and clicking change Icon. Am I missing something here?

Yeah, you can change the shortcut icon but not the icon for the exe itself. The installer creates the shortcut from the exe icon.

Ahhh, ok.

Mind you I think your idea of keeping it as the blitz icon is good anyway. It is a very very nice looking game. Well done. (But change the "full settings" thing from a thumbs up, cos as I said it looks like an accept settings icon)

[Couldnt the install package have a shortcut in it. And then crerate the shortcut from that shortcut?]

>[Couldnt the install package have a shortcut in it. And then crerate the shortcut from that shortcut?]

Not sure to be honest. I haven't put any effort into solving this. I think B3D should let you change the icon but it's not a big deal.

shaders? i see nothing that looks like fake shaders.

I know, I meant its a good example of how good a game can look when people insist they need the latest fancy features.

Yeah I agree - keeping the Blitz icon might be a nice way to say thanks to BRL.

I've been playing around with NW a bit - it's absolutely fabulous.
It's also a stunning example of what can be done in Blitz.
Very inspiring stuff.

JP, you need to change your sig!

Can I buy some shares in this game, please? Hold on, I'm skint. Dammit! :P

You and me both. Have you played yet? I'll send you a challenge.

You and me both. Have you played yet? I'll send you a challenge.

Oi! I was gonna have that "recruit"!

Anyone else not yet signed up in need of a challenge? ;-)

Too late, he was already registered.

LOL - ha ha ha ha - this is brilliant John and Ste (hiya guys!)...

I can't wait to get stomped on...

Again you have shown what originality is and why it is so important to the world of games. Brilliant stuff, looks gorgeous, stylish, original, slick, sophisticated and above all FUN to play.

Great work!

IPete2.

Cheers Pete. I'll forgive you for stealing my helicopter. Turn your back for 2 seconds...

Ah, been away from the PC for a bit and only just got your challenge, John. Cheers.

TBH, I haven't tried Naked War yet. :/ I've never been one for strategy type games - haven't even played Advance Wars - but I'll have a crack at this. Got to learn how to play first so it may be a while before you get my reply, and don't laugh too loudly if I make a complete balls-up. :P

Don't worry too much. It's easy to pick up but it'll take a game or two to learn all the little wrinkles. But you can mess around in Sandbox till you get the hang of the controls and such if you like.

Looks excellent, I can't wait to start playing, well done, you could (I hope) have a phenomenon on your hands.

Is it worth seeing if you can get a few famous people to play and issue challenges? That might:

a) Make some people really want to play because they might get to play vs. someone famous.

b) By generate some press coverage for your efforts.

I think the more people know about this the better!

Darkheart

>Looks excellent, I can't wait to statt playing, well done, you could (I hope) have a phenomenon on your hands.

Don't wait. Play now. The first game is free.

>Is it worth seeing if you can get a few famous people to play and issue challenges?

Anyone got Julia Roberts email address?

John: I've been having a quick mess around in sandbox - seems like this could be a good laugh, once I've got the hang of things, but I seem to be getting some texturing problems.

My monitor can only do 800x600 max (long story) so I first tried in 640x480 windowed mode, but get the following (default gfx settings):

Anyway, I wasn't able to read some of the smaller text in this mode, and my PC isn't powerful enough to handle the default GFX settings, so, next, I tried 800x600 fullscreen, with all GFX settings set to min:

This got me a nice FPS but there's still some odd texturing happening on the move/jump paths.

One last thing. :) On the GFX settings menu, in fullscreen, the mouse pointer in drawn behind the text.

My PC specs:
1 Ghz Athlon
GeForce2 GTS 32MB
256MB RAM
Win98SE

Wow those Gf2 cards are a pain. I think non-square textures are causing a problem there.

Could be, I guess. Anyway, at least I can still play. Just a bit more messing around in the sandbox later and I'll have a go at your challenge. ;)

Really impressed with this so far, despite having to play with all the bells and whistles turned off. Great, intuitive interface, too - controlling things didn't turn out to be half as complicated as I imagined it'd be.

Cheers. I tested the interface on my 6 year old so anyone should be able to use it.

You should be able to turn on the scenery - its mainly texture stuff that seems to affect performance rather than poly count.

JP

Yeah, I've upped some of the mesh and texture details a bit and still get a good FPS.

OK, I've managed to reply and accept your challenge. However, I had trouble doing this in fullscreen mode: I get the rotating sheep for a few seconds and then get complete system lockup and have to reboot.

By crikey this is FUN!
I've been playing in the sandbox for a little while now, and I've built up enough confidence to issue my first challenge to "everyone".
"bcass" accepted my challenge and the 1st turns have been played out. I'll keep feverishly checking my inbox for the next turn to arrive.
(my naked war username is "poppichicken", by the way).

I suspect very strongly that I'll be subscribing once my free challenge is finished.
This game has the potential to be really big - it certainly offers long term FUN for players, that's for sure.

What's interesting is that people do seem to keep playing this game. Since the Beta program started the activity has been approx. 100 turns per day with no let up. Since Friday (the 'soft' launch) we're hitting about 300+ turns per day, increasing each day as several people join.

Obviously many of those are still playing their free games - hopefully they'll want to continue after that.

I'll keep feverishly checking my inbox for the next turn to arrive.

You and every one else playing NW!

Subscription purchased.
What a fantastic game.

I find the prospect of finding Naked War turns in my inbox far more exciting than playing Half Life 2 Episode 2 (when it gets released).

"You are success"

Wow those Gf2 cards are a pain. I think non-square textures are causing a problem there.
Actually, I've just managed to get the movement/jump/fire path textures to work correctly by fiddling with the GFX settings. Not sure what I did, TBH, but it looks much nicer now. :)

BTW, what does the 'Texture Pack' setting do?

Different resolution textures - affects all sorts of stuff from the models to the screen text.

Yeah, I had to lower the texture quality to get it looking right on my Intel gfx - maybe you should set the default texture quality stuff to something lower? But I guess you don't want it looking crap by default on a decent gfx card either.

Dilemma!

Yeah. I'm going to put in some sort of auto-config for the next version.

Cheers for the (Free!) game, John, I really enjoyed it, despite getting completely trounced! Then again, Game's Designer Vs. Complete Newbie probably wasn't a fair fight. :)

Despite me thinking that strategy games aren't my bag, you've come up with a splendidly fun game, there - I had a blast. Now, can I have my clothes back, please?

Heh! I never know whether to go easy on newcomers or just go for it.

You still have your free credit (incoming challenges are free anyway). Why not challenge a friend? The more people play this, the better for us.

Yep, I will be making a challenge at some point - I want to familiarize myself with some of the other maps, and the finer points of the game machanics, first.

After that, I'll definately be buying a subscription. However, I don't have a credit card, so, will you be adding more payment options in the future? I have a debit card and a PayPal account.

If you PM Ste on our forum he'll sort out alternative payment no problem.

There's a link on the bottom of the buy page to trigger the PM or Email to Ste

http://www.zee-3.com/nakedwar/buy.php

Ah, OK. Cheers. Reminds me that I should show my face on the forum, I guess. :)

Anyone else want a game?

Mail me at john@... and I'll send you a free challenges (+ you'll get an extra free game with anyone you like).

Although it's not my kind of game: Congratulations to ya!

And keep us informed when the next Consolevania comes out, please. :O)

Although it's not my kind of game: Congratulations to ya!
Heh, I said that but really enjoyed it. Go on, give it a go - it won't cost you anything. ;)

I found another review

http://www.merseyremakes.co.uk/gibber/2006/07/31/naked-war/

I usually hate strategy games, but I'm loving Naked War. It struck me the other day that it's probably 'cos this game actually allows some strategy to be used, as opposed to the usual "tank rush or die" approach. It's also nice and relaxed to play compared to an RTS.

Wow that scottish review is insane! Could anyone understand what the guy was saying?

Anywho.. I think I'm gonna try this game now. Anyone wanna challenge me or something?

Po, a challenge is on its way. Once you register on our site and log on in the game you'll get another free challenge.

Rock always wins.. almost always anyways..

shhh.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I chose rock when playing John, and lost. :P

Anyway, to save John from having to play too many games at once, does anybody want to except a challenge from me? I'd be a fairer fight because I'm new to the game, too! :)

I always choose paper.

I'll remember that. :)

From the piccies this looks really good, have you thought about actually publishing it on CD?

No, it's online all the way.

I've downloaded the demo and I'm naked. Now, how do I receieve challenges?

If you send me your email address: john@... I'll challenge you. A challenge arrives as an email attachment (as do turns).

If you register on the forum you have a username which can be used instead of your email address. You LOG IN with that username on the title page and it will remember you from then on. When you log in you'll get a free credit to send a challenge to anyone you like. Incoming challenges (like the one I'm going to send to you) are always free.

I'll happily take a challenge!
I totally suck at NW at the moment so you'd stand a good chance!

Cool. I'll send you a challenge now. :)

I'll need your email addy, though. If you don't want to post it here, just send me an email (address in profile) and I'll snag it from that.

Oops! I forgot about that.
Email sent.

Cheers.
I look forward to the battle. :o)

Heh, I should have just asked for your NW username. Anyway, challenge sent. ;)

Prepare to lose your pants... or not! :P

This game is really great.

I've just finished my first game, consider another subscription sold, after the rematch.

Another quote for the front page!

Don't challenge that JP, he'll thrash the pants off of you (literally)

He he. I'm not that good - I just pick on the noobs. The only reason red are winning at the moment is because zzhari is on holiday. Now he's a demon player.

Two purchases today from the Blitz forum. Cheers guys! Get sending out those challenges (remember you get them back if you discover a new player).

Needs 2 players.

Sniff.

It's not a problem Puki. You can play against the community. Or me. There's loads of people playing. 48 turns were played in the last hour.

If you play against the community (a vs. everyone game) you'll get a different opponent with each turn.

Send me your email address and I'll challenge you.

The only reason red are winning at the moment is because zzhari is on holiday. Now he's a demon player.
Yeah, I was looking at his stats, before. I hope he took a nice, long holiday - I'm on the red team! :P

John: there's an email addy in puki's profile. Don't know if it's current, though. Hmm, maybe I should challenge him. Puki buys everything! :)

There's no way Puki is Michael Abrash.

Oh, would you prefer my Microsoft email then?

I'm not worthy Michael.

ah, so it's a comedy email address - I should have known. :/

No, it is a real one - try it

Yes, but is it your email address?

Yes.

Email me something, then I'll say what you sent in this thread to prove it.

OK, I'm waiting...

noodles!

(if this means nothing to you, please ignore this email)

well I never. :P

Gah, stupid game finally got the best of me, downloading now to try it out. ;P

This game looks prone to being the Laser Squad Nemesis killer in turn-based email gaming.

[EDIT] Had a sandbox & 2-player round against myself, must say, this is damn fun game...gotta couple things to note you may have heard/are aware of...

- Love using the microphone option for messages, anychance of giving the user the option to have the message end after the sound-clip, rather then clicking go or waiting 5 seconds?

- Zooming out real fast on the mouse wheel makes the camera zoom in fully, unsure if that's a bug or a feature

- Male voice coming from a female character....

- There an option to make tree's, buildings, etc, slightly transparent nearby the current selected character to make it easier to see movement locations?

Should really get me a credit card, would love to purchase a few credits to give this a whirl vs. a real opponent.

Should really get me a credit card, would love to purchase a few credits to give this a whirl vs. a real opponent.

Yeah go on, you know you want to!

It really is a fantastic game. I'm looking forward to seeing how busy the community around the game gets once word really starts to get around.

Incidentally, John & Ste, TOP WORK on the website.
Now THAT'S how you create a community-based game!
The website adds so much value to the game itself.
And the stats are fabulous - especially stuff like Value Ratio.

>Should really get me a credit card, would love to purchase a few credits to give this a whirl vs. a real opponent.

If you register you get a free credit. I'd be happy to send you a challenge now so you'll get 2 free games.

We can take payment by cheque or paypal if your don't have a compatible cc.

The new version is ready for download (torrents available too). All characters now have speech. Various other improvements & fixes.

This is an optional (but recommended) download. There's also a patch for the previous version which is about half size (16 meg).

http://www.naked-war.com/download.php

If you haven't played yet, now would be a great time to try! The first game is free.

Quick question - is it possible to play by yourself to get used to how the game works?

The thing thats always put me off online gaming, is that when you're new and come up against experienced players... there's little fun to be had from being repeatedly massacred because you don't know what you're doing.

Yeah. Just select local game->2 player game. It's quite interesting playing against yourself if you don't cheat and let one side win.

>little fun to be had from being repeatedly massacred because you don't know what you're doing

But you'd be surprised. While you will likely lose your first couple of games it's not a miserable experience. You're always in with a chance of winning. Your 4 soldiers can't die so you don't get in a situation where one side is massively dominating.

Both me and John are on the Red team too, however we just had a fight, hmm..I sense some mutiny in the ranks me lord!

The only reason red are winning at the moment is because zzhari is on holiday. Now he's a demon player.
Seems he's back from his hols - he's just sent me a challenge! *gulp*

I think he's out to up Blue team's rating, and is picking on Red team noobs to do it. Well, we'll see about that. I'm getting better, I think - I just won my first game! :)

Wish me luck!

You'll need it. According to Ste, he's still on holiday so he must have found an internet cafe or something.

Like I said: *gulp*

:)

Is it just me that's having trouble getting the new version (1.0.060807) to go full screen?

Manually setting default.txt and config.txt to full didn't help either.

??

I believe there is a bug in the most recent version with full screen. JP posted an exe on the forum, and the full downloads have also been updated, so you might want to give one of those another shot.

Yes Bickford is a near perfect name. Pickford, Bickford they both sound good to me

Aha, that's sorted it! Cheers Mark. :o)

I'm getting better, I think - I just won my first game! :)

Yes, against me by the looks!

:o(

That was a good game. Being cornered like that by ALL of your units was rather humiliating.

Ah well, time for a rematch. :o)

Heh, yeah, it was a fun game. I had a heck of a job hunting you down in that pesky helicopter, for a bit. :)

Rematch, huh? Sounds good - see you on the battle field. ;)

Yep, that helicopter was my only hope. Sigh...

Told you I was crap. :o)

>Is it just me that's having trouble getting the new version (1.0.060807) to go full screen?

There's a new exe that fixes this. Link on the forum.

666 completed games! (and well over 300 still in progress).

Puki still hasn't tried it. I wonder if he will if I offer to sell him one of the models?

The war is currently a very close run thing: Blue Team 74 wins; Red Team 75 wins.

> Latest loser:
> big10p

Haha! Psu kicked your arse! :)

Haha! Psu kicked your arse! :)
No, no - that's another big10p, not me. :P

Pah, OK - I blame it on those bloody turrets in The Big Divide. I have beaten Psu before, though, honest. :)
