Why has the Code Archieves been changed ?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Why has the Code Archieves been changed ?

Not that I'm fundamentally opposed to changing it or anything but everything is now harder to find and there is no search fascility either. In fact it seems all the changes to it have made it substantially less useful than it was before.

There also seems to be lots of stuff missing which is a real shame because there where some great snippets in there before. Many's the time I've gone back through the archieves seeking some handy piece of code I'd seen before and now suddenly needed.

Unless making the archieve less useful was the objective why has the change been made?

Thanks,

Darkheart

I don't think the code archive has ever had a search facility?

What changes are you talking about, specifically?

The codearchs used to have categorys with a seperate "forum" for each category, like 3D Graphics, Misc, File Operations etc. Which was at least navigable and possible to find what you wanted.

Now it's just a big flat, list of 1600 entrys with no search fascility. i.e. about as useful as an inflatable dartboard.

I did actually find that (via Google) Pert and using it I found what I initally came for, but the link has been replaced on the main page, presumeably for a reason, are there any plans to discontinue the old structure?

Why has it been changed to what is there now which is obviously inferior?

If they wanted to make the codearchs more useful they could add the search fascility to them which would be a step forwards rather than a step back.

Darkheart

Well, you've lost me I'm afraid.

Perturbatio's link goes to the same place as the "Code Archives" link at the top of this page.

Darkheart

Oh that.

At the top of that page is a 'code archives' link. Takes you to the categorised menu.

What part of "an alternative way of viewing the code achives" confused you? :-)

The categories are quite outdated by now..

For instance: there's only a B+ GUI section, not a MaxGUI section. .bmx and .bb being mixed-up in the other categories also doesn't do well imho.

I'd suggest a complete new structure based on blitz version:

Max
- 3d (with current OGL commands)
- 3d (for the official 3d module)
- 2d
- GUI
- math/algo
- audio
- file
- misc
- network

B+ / B3d
- 3d *
- 2d
- GUI *
- math/algo
- audio
- file
- misc
- network

* depending on the blitzversion

And perhaps some categories could have more subcategories.. 'graphics' would be a part of 2d, as well as soft-gui engines.

The Code Archives forum works the same way as it's always done - although it did disappear for a bit. I like the way it works because it let's you quickly see what new things have been added to the archives and also quickly see if someone has posted a comment/question.

If you're looking for a specific entry then use the 'code archives' link at the top of the page, which still has the categories, as has already been said. Once a category has been selected, there's a 'language' link to filter the listed entries to show just bmax or normal blitz code, if you want.

maybe they've just changed it to stop me from pilfering and raping it of all the code i've stolen... err, i mean, borrowed, without paying the troll...

I love Archieves!

Are they the small fish thingies you get on pizza?

I love Archieves!
Some sort of artichoke/anchovy recipe, I assume? ;)

It sounds like a cheese crisp. It's making me hungry.

I don't see any changes - it's been like that for ages.

and puki should know... he's an expert at pilfering stuff... err, i meant to say, borrowing stuff...

I don't borrow... I get "inspired" and complacently forget to change variable names... allegedly... at times...

From time to time the forums are down due to maintenance and
I think: "This time they will do some of the stuff people
in the community have asked for, yeah !". But every time
I'm disappointed, nothing new.... :(

Top of my list is:
- Searchable code archive
- MaxGui forum
- Possibility to delete outdated code-archive entries
- Not possible to change nick !
