Which Amiga Game Was This?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Which Amiga Game Was This?

All this talk of Amigas has me thinking of an Amiga game I used to enjoy. I have no idea what it was called, but have a vague recollection that it *MIGHT* have begun with P.

It was a top down or perhaps 3/4 view scrolling Adventure/RPG. It was set on a space station. You controlled a person ( not a creature or ship or anything ) and there wasn't any/much combat. It was mostly a sort of Spellbound-style find the objects characters need and that sort of thing. I'm almost certain there was a basketball court on the station.

my version came on a single floppy with several other games, but it was probably a pirate compilation disk of some kind. It might have been a PD or shareware game, I don't know. All I know is that it was given to me with a bunch of other disks when a friend sold his Amiga. I can't remember what else was on the disk, but have a vague recollection that Carrier Command might have been on there.

Anyone have the slightest idea what I'm rambling on about?

no sorry.

Can I add a game to the "Which Game was this" list?

I had an adventure game for the Amiga and it was one where the screen was a predrawn picture and you could click on parts of it and do stuff, like a door to take you somewhere. It was kinda FPS I guess, you didn't move any characters round or anything, and it wasn't a Dungeon Master clone. It was fantasy based and I think the picture was in the top left corner and interface may have been the rest. You may have even been against the clock or something or you could die as I remember having to start it again a few times. I don't think it was very well known, it may have even been PD. It had great atmostphere but I wonder if the graphics were a bit primative? Any ideas? ...

Gabriel - Was it "Perihelion"?

I also have no idea but want to add one to the "WTF was it?" list?

Pretty sure it was a bullfrog game and you were a wizard. Think it was top down action/adventure type. Can't remember a whole lot about it but the music was catchy and I think you could cast weird spells.

Qube: Nope, wasn't that. Though that does look like a good game.

Kanati: Druid? EDIT: Nm, Druid was pre-Amiga.

There was a bullDOG game caled Feud.

Feud was a top game.

Was it a quarantine type of game? With some sort of blobby spores that were spreading like a virus or something? Can't remember the damn name..fat help I am.

The wizard game was called 'Immortal' right?

immortal................ hrm. Maybe. I'll see if I can find it.

Only thing I can think of is Space Rogue by Orgin or Star Command by SSI.

Check this site out...it lists alot of amiga games:
http://eager.back2roots.org/index.html

Jason

Thanks JasonW I'll try and trawl throught that later...needs a search function!

Gabriel, was it a point and click adventure? If it was then I may be able to find the name of it as I remember playing one that fits your description.

Jason.

Nope, it wasn't a point and click. You definitely had control of the main character with the joystick.

Thanks for the link, Jason, I'll take a look. Pretty sure it was a lot less well-known than Space Rogue or Star Command, but I'll check them out.

Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters?

D/Generation?

Ah! D-generation! That's the one I was thinking of! I can finally die peacefully.

space crusade?

Nope, nope and nope.

Can you make a crude image of what it looked like?

Jason

I can't imagine a horrible 2d botch by me will help anyone, but you never know. That's how I remember it anyway.

thanks..I don't recall it, it might be a PD or SW game.

ok, I'm playing detective...do you remember any sounds? Please record your voice making these sounds...heh, kidding.

Jason

I remember a topdown one which I cannot recall much but you are running around a nuclear plant and there are barrels of nuclear goo and mutant things... DGen style before DGen though... possibly from the same company.

I looke dhere:
http://eab.abime.net/archive/index.php/t-1629.html
and here:

and not lastly but also:

Good luck!

try this site, it's got pictures.

I actually owned a copy of D-Gen and it never occurred to me that it was set in space. =]

I actually owned a copy of D-Gen and it never occurred to me that it was set in space. =]
That's because it wasn't. It was set in an office/research lab type thing.

No wonder I couldn't help =]

sniff and noone remembers my lost game...

Captive?

All these old games are but tears in the rain

i have not clue because i never even had an Amiga or even heard of it till a while ago

i have not clue because i never even had an Amiga or even heard of it till a while ago

Bahhh, you heathen, ban him from the forum immediately!!!

i have not clue because i never even had an Amiga or even heard of it till a while ago
Um, why post, then? o.O

Sounds like Pandora. Im pretty sure Carrier Command was on the same disk i had also.

Captive?
No I had that. It was *not* scifi and Dungeon Master style. Great game btw.

Spacehulk?

Different Pandora.
Search on lemonamiga.com has it.

woo found it. It as called shadowgate:

Ahhh! When computers were computers. Look at that workbench screen - xp/vista eat your heart out!

The graphics still look pretty decent though.

yeah an the OS actually worked too - it didn't crash or need tons of drivers...

@Gabriel
Do you mean the one where you controlled a character walking around in a space station and there also was this fantastic piano player with the sound altering volume due to the distance?! :O) If so wasn't this called Pandora?

@Grey
It looked nice in the beginning but the game wasn't much fun.

@taumel: Yeah I remember dying a lot and being frustrated at playing it over, not sure there was a save. I don't think it got good reviews (I read a comment on the net) but at the time I thought it was good, but I was just a kid...I think I liked the clicking on the scenery and bits moved away to show secrets etc. I'll play it later as I've found a ROM.

Enjoy... :O) I once was in the mood to play an old amiga game and played around with MindWalker a bit...i still loved the psychodelic feeling...

never played that one. I played a lot of games on my Amiga, mind you I've played a lot on the PC too. Ever try Hunter or Midwinter, they were very atmospheric...Naturally I did Dungeon Master and EOB123, also Larn (remember that?). Spindizzy, that was weird and hard.

The green slime is very thick and is warm to the touch.

o_O

Hello.

@Grey: I keep telling people, Larn was like the best game ever and I still play it now. Yes, on an Athlon-64 2.4G beast :o)

I also liked Dragonstone which was a pleasant RPG/Hack'n'Slash.

http://www.lemonamiga.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemonamiga.com/games/recent.php

For a moment when looking at the above description I thought you might have meant ROTOX which was a very peculiar sometimes unplayable game but lots of fun anyway.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/rotox

Goodbye.

LEMMINGS.

The green slime is very thick and is warm to the touch.
yep, I wouldn't have it any other way...clearly it was the monsters time of the month .

SoggyP: Yeah I played it for ages, kept me coming back for more. Excellent, Dragonstone, you've reminded me of another classic I've got to play, I think I only had a demo... Aha, Rotox, I think I remember that, or at least a very similar game. The map screenshot is the one that sticks in my mind the most:http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/rotox/screenshots/gameShotId,6365/ Were there any other 3D (overhead) rotational games, maybe I'm thinking of one of those instead.

Got another one for you Amiga gurus. Have been looking for this game for a while:

It was a top down space shooter with large scrolling levels. I think the theme was space pirates and each level had huge amounts of varied smaller ships to shoot at as well as a big boss ship which invariably was shaped like a fish.

Any ideas of the games name. Prolly something really obvious.

was it vertical scrolling or multi-directional? Xenon II had fish but no pirates but I doubt you'd forget that...

Yes! Jabinski and Taumel are right. Pandora is indeed the game I was thinking of. Now I have to dig out an Amiga Emulator and see if it's stood the test of time.

Thanks guys, and very well done from such a vague description.

By me!

By me!
no way lol!

@Gabriel
Always a pleasure if i could be of use... ;O)

@Grey
I never played Larn but i've played Rogue a lot. Hey DM, what do ya think?! Of course... EOB was okay but not really good. The Bard's Tale was much more fascinating. The singing monks and the magic mouth. Ahh i hope that the next Bard's Tale will be a good game beside of the humour.

Larn and Rogue were ok, but the Omega was better.

But, the amiga version of moria ruled them all.

I found this: http://www.minesofmorgoth.com/history.html

Jason

It as called shadowgate

Wow, that really looks a lot like a DM clone ;]

If so wasn't this called Pandora?

The game called Pandora that I remember was set in a space station, although I don't remember any piano players (and I finished it too)... it had a wicked theme tune by Mr Whittaker...

EOB was okay but not really good

What?!? It's the second best of it's kind!!! Heathen!!!

@Toby
I remember a piano player in the upper middle part of the station.

I wasn't excited about EOTB as it came out after Dungeon Master and didn't bring any really new elements. It simply was a not so good copy of it with a big D&D licence in the background. I dislike D&Ds magic system as there are far better and easier paper roleplaying games around which use a better one. DMs magic system was inovative. They simply had a lot of ideas inside the game where EOTB simply was a weaker clone with a smaller 3d view and some poplike coloured dungeons, altough they had a few nice monsters drawn but that was it in my opinion...

Wow, that really looks a lot like a DM clone ;]
It's not though. That screen maybe looks like a DM screen due to the camera angle, but all the screens were hand drawn and had different areas you could click on, you didn't move into the screen or rotate around by 90degrees. Oh an if you were being sarcastic, I never said it *was* like a DM clone ;-p

I also agree that EOB was the second best in the genre after DM. I still liked them actually except for the damn loading (and disk swapping) at certain places where you went up and down stairs...However I don't feel strongly enough about it to stop talking to Taumel again ;-) but if he'd slagged off dungeon master, that would be another thing!

@Jason thanks for the recommendation.

Anyway I was peed off that I tried to play shadowgate last night in WinUAE on A500 and A1200 mode and it gives a guru meditation! What a bummer. Anyone got it working?

Look here to play Shadowgate on other platforms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowgate

Or

Use WinFellow:
http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?s=3d0b470f2d3012d396610cd2c561fa11&p=32411&postcount=10

Jason

I always liked Legend.

@Grey
This saved my day!;O)

Jason W. OK, I'll look into it but it was the amiga one I wanted to play, sniff :-( what's winfellow! A win3.1 emulator?

@taumel: What did?

No, WinFellow is another amiga emulator. Or you can try Fellow...the dos version.

BTW, what kickstart rom image you using? You should use 1.2 or 1.3 kickstart versions...since the game supports the OCS hardware (amiga 500, 1000, 2000, 2500).

Try these settings mentioned in this post: http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=177434&postcount=14

Jason

I don't feel strongly enough about it to stop talking to Taumel again ;-)

You're both in my bad books now... EOB is only second to Hired Guns... DM was OK but was unecessarily tedious. Certainly very good before it got any competition - but DM2 made up for that.

Hired Guns wasn't a good game in my opinion but DM was brilliant!

I
have
enjoyed
it
a
lot
!
;O)

@Grey
Read your posting "not talking" ;O)

Cosmic Pirate.

That´s it exactly, thanks John. So simple, but couldnt remember it for the life of me.

This isn't an amiga game, but rather an old PC game from 1993 I believe:
It was an old-school street racing game where you race your car for money or pink slips. You started in your garage with almost no money and you had to buy a car from the newspaper. The best car was a corvette but it was the most expensive. You could then tune your engine(among other things) before each race. To challenge people you would have to wait outside a cafe for someone to come. You could either race on dead-mans road, or in the aqueducts. It was hard and I never won, but it was still fun.
Don't remember the name though.

I loved Hired Guns. Bought it at a computer show in London, along with Monkey Island and some Sierra adventures. We were supposed to be going on an educational visit with the college, but a few of us slipped away and piddled off to Ally Pally for the show instead. Hey, I wasn't gonna miss out on cheap Amiga games :P

Jason W. Thanks. I tried those settings but with kickstart 1.3 as I don't have 1.2 but it stil Guru Meditations. Maybe I'll search for a different adf...

So Hired Guns, well I never played it. I'm afraid though that DM2 was *not* as good as DM even though there was a shop etc...

It might be your adf version. I remember playing shadowgate a long time ago, did not get into it.

I'm amazed you guys did not metion Black Crypt. I thought it was a step up from all rpg games.

Amiga rpgs did not take too much of my time, these did:
Mechforce - best sharewere ever made.
Ports of Call.
Test Drive
SSI AD&D games.
Zak McKraken and Monkey Island 2.
Wings or any cinemaware game...it was a sad day when they closed down.
Oh..and the best was Frontier: Elite 2.

Honorable mentions: Scortched Tanks, Amos and Amos Pro, Blitz Basic 2, and the Aminet sites.

Jason

still can't find any other copies of shadowgate, sigh. Anyone got it?

Ahh yes McKraken and Monkey Island were great. If you liked those, you'll also like 'The Dig' which I came by more recently.

@po

Street Rod?

Or

Street Rod II?

Oh..and the best was Frontier: Elite 2
The only thing frontier was the best at, was being the worst sequal of all time. (Including Rambo)

Impixi: yup deffinately #2

still can't find any other copies of shadowgate, sigh. Anyone got it?

Yes. Any idea which version you have? It'll take me a couple of days to dig through my backup DVD's, but if you can give me an idea which version you have, I can see which other version(s) I have.

po, Street Rod was actually prmarily a C64 game, but the Amiga version was better. =]

The PC version blew.

And everything else you guys say about RPGs is wrong =]

Black Crypt was better than DM too... I think it was the only one I didn't finish tho...

@Nomen, be sure to be playing those games using ScummVM. It makes everything look and sound great.

@Jason: The Ports of Call guys have done a modern PC version if you're interested. So is Cinemaware - www.cinemaware.com

Nah also Black Crypt wasn't as far as good as DM, not even close. Just another copy which was worse than the original. Fortunately Raven did far better games after this one.

Ports of Call was great (including sachs graphics!), i've played it a lot. Anyone remember the TV-shows with Rolf-Dieter Klein?! :O)

@Gabriel: Thanks! OK, I have ShadowGate.zip which is 597kb. It contains shadowgate.adf which is 901,120 (amiga disk sized) but compressed to 611,854 bytes. It is dated 22/08/97 01:40. I'm using WinUAE 1/3 and the A500 quickstart. It loads up Amiga DOS 1.3 and then a black screen with an orange logo with 3 three cloaked figures and lots of cracker text by UNIT A (big logo). Hope this helps pinpoint it. Basically if you have one that works in WinUAE1.3 then it should be fine on mine. I only have kickstart 1.3 and higher, I don't have 1.2.

Thanks for the tip, Tobes.

Grey: I found five ( yes, five ) different versions of the game, and since I don't have any emulator set up, I just emailed you a rar containing all five. Hopefully you'll be able to make one of them work.

Gabriel woo! Thanks for your time. I don't have the email yet though...been getting other emails. I'll send you one to check...

I sent it to the account you have showing on here ( info@... )

Want it resent to the address you used to send the test email?

taumel, I seriously believe you are looking at DM with rose coloured glasses. =]

Well, sure my perspective is subjective but i remember some games i played or tried out very well and have the feelings stored for them and with DM i really remember great emotions while with the others i don't. What was bad in DM in your opinion? Okay you couldn't face 99 skeletons which you could blow away with your flame horns like in The Bard's Tale... ;O)

I also played DM2 on the pc and it quite was fun but not as much as DM on the amiga - there was this evil guy getting on your nerves after some time. Hired Guns had this great drawn characters in the selection menu - the beautiful dark haired female and so on but in the end i had my best moments with RPGs on the amiga with The Bard's Tale 1, DM and Ultima. These we're games which just worked perfectly for me. Good story, good system, good graphics, just felling well there...

@Gabriel: yes please. Sorry to trouble you, but it's much appreciated. That email address works when I send test emails to myself but your .zip never arrived, weird!

I also did DM recently on the PC and it was great, but I was about 15 years old and less excitable.

Bards Tale II was a great game for me, really cool. And as for non-amiga games, Ultima Underworld I & II and Ultima VII and VIII.

I really should get into bit Torrenting sometime so I can get an Amiga TOSEC collection, but I've never had a need for filesharing as I buy my music/movies/games.

However, I've been hunting for a Dragon Stone .adf and not getting any luck. Anyone able to help - Gabriel? Thanks in advance...

Resent those Shadowgate roms. No trouble, not now I'm on broadband. There are no DragonStone roms on the DVD I found Shadowgate on, but I probably do have it, so I'll try to find it over the weekend, and send it on if no one else finds it first.

groovy got them thanks!

Ok, I have Dragonstone. Appears to be on 5 disks, does that sound right? I'm doing some FTP stuff at the moment, so give me about 30 mins and check your inbox.

yipee thanks dude I'll check soon.

What was bad in DM in your opinion?

Nothing really... As I said it was quite good for it's time. It just didn't hook me long enough to bother finishing it. I got pretty damn close tho I reckon. As for Hired Guns/DM2... I played them both on the Miggy too... I couldn't imagine the PC versions would have been that special back in those days.

Admittedly, I look at EOB through rose coloured glasses too, because it was the first of it's type that I played =]

Also, I just couldn't get into the Bards Tale games, no matter how hard I tryed... so there's obviously some differences in our tastes =] But you're still the heathen <grin>

I prefer beeing called a heathen over a zealot! ;O)

let's stop talking to Toby, he's obviously a nincompoop.

So's yer mother. =]

DM Fans (RTC just had DM2:Skullkeep added)
http://www.ragingmole.com/RTC and has a wicked editor with it now to create your own dungeons.

Frontier: Elite 2 fans (sorry but I am one) - I found this a couple of weeks ago

For a trip down memory lane.

I just got back from my 6day orlando trip. Did I miss anything?

@Andy
Thanks for that post. I need to check that out.

Jason

yeah that DM remake is great, played it a while ago. Haven't tried DM2 on it but I have the PC version, mind you it's DOS!

Jason... yeah, someone called Toby a nincomppop...

:)

--Mike

99.

100TH POST! :)

someone called Toby a nincomppop...

No they didn't =]

nincomppop!

they did now. ;)

The best game on amiga was.
"Wings OF fury"
All that screaming and Booms.
Repair Aircraft was fun too.

What else did you expekt from me.
