WinUAE @ 100Hz = LUSH!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/WinUAE @ 100Hz = LUSH!

Yep, I finally upgrade my ancient WinUAE to V1.3.

Then I set the display mode to be full-screen at 100Hz with VSync on. This gives 100% smooth perfect scrolling on games like Turrican. Without it, the scrolling is all jerky on horrid due to game wanting 50Hz and PC giving something else like 60Hz or 75Hz etc.

This setting didn't work properly in my old WinUAE and 50Hz isn't supported by my card so I'm really pleased with the result.

Is it free? I have my original Amiga Forever CD somewhere, can I upgrade from this?

Turrican is and always will be a fave of mine. I would go on to say that it has my favourite game soundtrack of all time. Chris Hulsbeck is a legend.

Jason.

Pah, all you Amiga-philes and your rose-tinted memories. Now, the Speccy, on the other hand... :P

QuickSilva: YEs just google WinUAE, totally free but you need the Kickstart ROMs to be able to use it and plenty of adf files to run games.

big10p: don't think so...

That's it - I'm sending the lads 'round.

Big10p: s'OK I had a 48K but it broke one day :-( still got the pieces.

QuickSilva: re: Turrican: Oh yeah, I've been pretty vocal about Turrican before (and T2, but not T3). The music is great too, chip music. Since I played Turrican I've tried to make a decent platform game on the Amiga, in DOS, in Windows and the last verison was Iron Fist which you've seen.

I quite fancy having a go at writing a platform game in BlitzMax (using your framework possibly). We've got the new Mario game on the DS and it's great. I'd be happy if I managed to create something that was only half as playable tbh.

Shows how bad modern games are, when people are using inefficient software emulations of woefully crude and out of date hardware.

Prepare for flamewar, Chris C! :P

Hmm, I'm Chris C, too. I want to be unique, dammit!

Chris C:

Maybe that's also a sign of just how short a distance today's "authoring packages" allow one to go in practical terms without getting into major problems?

Well I was using WinUAE for nostalgia, and they are cool. But there are some good modern games too.

Finished Gods yesterday and started playng Cadaver but it's quite hard to figure out...

@Bobby Ball: Yeah go to it man. Actually I'm planning on making a platform game add-on to my module ... when I get some spare time.

Out of date, for sure, but I'm not sure I'd describe the Amiga hardware as crude. In fact, I'd say it was elegant and ahead of it's time. It was already using separate chips for music and graphics, long before other systems were, and it was doing a damn fine job of it. ( The blitter was the reason that the Amiga could so easily outperform the Atari ST. )

Personally I'm more of a SNES guy than an Amiga guy, in terms of emulation, but I do think there was an elegant simplicity to a lot of games which you just don't get any more, yeah.

But I don't always want to play elegant simple games, so I'm not going to knock ( all ) modern games.

Yep the Amiga hardware was cool. I found out how to program it all in assembly early on and was amazed by it's power, esp. the Copper.

Been playing raibow islands, what a brill game...

I think the key thing is that all the old systems were unique. People knew if a game was running on an Amiga or a SNES because they all had their own traits. Now apart from the Nintendo DS you could be playing on practically any console and have the exact same experience. Which raises the question why have we got so many if they all do the same thing? At least Nintendo strive to be different.

The Amiga was an extraodinary machine for its time, I still really miss using mine and it was hard to give it up for a PC. I always felt really productive on the Amiga when doing my artwork. I also had, have, a Speccy 128 and loved that too.

Jason.

1.3 is out now? Cool.

bah, my rainbow islands ROM crashes when you get to toy island (round 13). It has corrupt graphics. Anyone got a good copy? (I seem to remember the "original" cracked version years ago that a friend had did this too...

I`m still trying to get hold of DPaint 4 and 5. I have 3 but cannot find the other two anywhere.

Jason.

If you can find Parasol Stars for the Amiga, you MUST play it. Rainbow Islands 2 and easily the best version of this game ever made (it's very rare)
I also recommend Rodland for fans of any Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands style awesomeness. :) Again, another game which only seemed to ever get converted to the Amiga.

I played these 2 games for years and years. Awesome.

Yes! Best 2-player fun you could have on your Amiga, with the possible exception of Kick Off 2.

Lords of Choas good 2 player. And sencible soccer was better than KO2

Actually I think I found DPaint once but had trouble running it as it was AGA. Oh well...

Jason.

I'm looking for an old Amiga game called "Colorado".

Have you tried looking in Colorado?

...I'll get my coat.

John C: email me

ENAY: thanks for the recommendation, I didn't know about that one. I've got rodland. Bubble bobbles was so good on the C64.

QuickSilva: Dpaint could do everything, animations, colour cycling, rotate 2D in 3D etc, it was ace. Use to use it for my game graphics and assembly demos.

Anyone ever get to level 21 on Great Giana Sisters? It's bugged as right atthe startyou just fall through the floor and die ... nice :-(

OK, all you people really need to search your fav P2P sites for TOSEC. Seriously. =]

Grey, I finished Rainbow Islands a very long time ago using a cracked version from some people whose cracktro had wicked music ripped straight from a game called Vixen. Find that version and you shall find your ending. Also it's weird about the Great Giana Sisters bug, as I had a friend who finished that game many times and I thought there was only ever one version of that game (cracktro has raster bars cycling around each other).

Toby. The Rainbow Islands I have is cracked by Vision Factory and there is no music, so I guess that's no the same version. Also Great Giana sisters is cracked by Red Sector (which move around each other, but they are not copper bars as wide as the screen...). Maybe I need to find some alternative versions then...

Red Sector rings a bell, perhaps I'm a little dusty on the exact details of the rest of the cracktro, but I remember that name now =] Maybe you just got a bad copy.

In any case, looking at my TOSEC v0.29 collection, there are 4 versions of GGS, only one being cracked by RSI... so I was wrong about that too =]

ahah cool, I'll have to look for an alternative.

@big10p - It's 95F in my backyard today, it will be a few months before you need a coat in most of Colorado!
