Wii on da web
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Wii on da web you just wanted to say that didn't you?...
Anwyay it seems that only attractive people play games according to the website.

they assocciate the attractive people with their product, that way their product gets more attractive, if they put ugly people how would that look?
@Grey
No problem with that as i am attractive... ;O)

At least they give some kind of explanation for the name:
[edit] Meh, ANOTHER website that assumes my background window colour is set to the default white. Mine's pale green. Why don't they specify the background colour specifically in the HTML, or whatever?
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

There's no way I've running a site that uses that much crappy flash. Piis off, where's the non flash version?
Yah, they clearly weren't planning for the Flashblock extension.
USE JAVASCRIPT!
There is one thing on this site that is best done with Flash, which is that fancy moving image thing with the videos.
...But even that could be done with Javascript and transparent PNGs. (Along with an alpha PNG hack for IE).
Heck, even those completely static buttons at the bottom of the page are done with Flash, limiting me to only one way of clicking them which I rarely use.
From the looks of it, not even Nintendo.com is accessible to my DS. (Running the only web browser available for the system, which is a text-based browser called retawq).
Since Opera on the DS also seems to be Flashless, they'd better fix this up quickly!
On the light side, I liked this line:
"Wii's elegant design makes it an inviting addition to your entertainment setup without monopolising it."
For once, I think I can safely say that they really know what they're doing.
(Except for the RAM limitations, of course).
I think it's interesting that everyone who buys a Wii seems to also be given a stylish chair with pillows that re-align themselves during intense seizures.
Grey: Be careful with that statement ;)

Why would you want to block flash? Bandwidth?
Bandwidth, advertisements, and I like to scream with horror whenever I see it used somewhere it should not.
I tried Flashblock and it seemed to make everything a lot nicer :)
...I guess the real reason is that I just plain hate the thing.

Generally developing in flash is faster, easier, more reliable as you have much less browser issues, and so on. You alone need the plugin for the movies, so why not doing the whole page in flash?! Well, there are good and bad examples for sites in flash but in the end you could also %&$ up a site in javascript...
Flash ads are a bit annoying but I can cope. :)
Taumel:
Flash has its places, (video player definietly, since a text-based browser wouldn't be doing those anyway) but it should never be purposefully used for links unless the site has some kind of revolutionary new structure that simply can't be done without a complex Flash application.
HTML links are not designed to be clicked; they are designed to be selected and triggered. When web developers all assume that this link is to be left clicked and only left clicked which results only in a new page being loaded in the current frame, their web sites lose accessibility. They lose even more of this accessibility when that assumption is done using Flash.
It's usually not much of a problem, but if it's a big company like Nintendo when they're touting accessibility as their philosophy, it is quite bad.
I am almost tempted to write them a letter.

I disagree. Why shouldn't i do links i flash? It's much more annoying having html for this, javascript for that, java herefore and using flash therefore. Then i prefer doing it straight with one technology. Flash has a large installed userbase and features the advantages i've already written above. Use it wisely and it won't hurt anyone (at least not the target audience for this one...) That said i didn't say anything about how well the nintendo site is done!
I was thinking the other day, that since the wii takes gamecube games, they should release the gamecube sdk (plus an api for the new controller stuff on the wii) to indie devs.
Then charge normal comercial licences for wii dev kits.
Then indie programmers can make games for the wii and game cube, but there is still a commercial market for the new features etc.

I've been hoping that, too.
The system has lots of ways to get into it, so it seems a bit silly to even try locking out pirates. (Which, in turn, locks out indie developers).
With the DS, it seems quite unfortunate that they did not support the homebrew scene.
Lots of DS homebrew developers use a flash cart which is literally incapable of piracy, since binaries are limited to being only 4MB, as they are stored in the system's RAM. (Actual game data can be loaded from a CF card).
Had Nintendo done a similar flash cart of their own and released it as some sort of official homebrew dev kit, DS software piracy wouldn't be indirectly produced by homebrewers and Nintendo would be able to keep it all close to its chest.

Graphics Processing Unit: Being developed with ATI.
Jee, that's a lot of information.
I couldn't give a toss about hardware specs, TBH. I just know I'll want to play the thing. :)
yeah I won't be buying it for the specs, I'll be buying it for the fun.
Interesting sentence on the hardware page.

It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

i can't wait to get the Wii and start programming games and playing them. i hope the dev tools for it are not too costly
