Name the types of games you'd like to make
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Name the types of games you'd like to make
The topic title says it all really. There are a bunch of types of games that I would one day like to make or be involved in developing. Some are realistic ambitions and others are just pipe dreams.
Here, in no particular order, is my list of games that I'd be interested in making:
*A frenetic 2d platform shooter like Metal Slug.
*A platform/rpg in the style of the later Wonderboy games.
*An RPG/Adventure game hybrid similar to Quest for Glory.
*A traditional 2d RPG in the Fallout/Baldur's Gate style.
*An Elite-style game with a unique fantasy setting.
*A top-down action game like Gauntlet.
*A fantasy beat'em up similar to Golden Axe.
*A 3d Superhero action adventure game, where the emphasis wold be on saving people and averting disasters with your superpowers rather than fighting.
* A first person haunted house simulator. Sort of like playing the unseen evil presence in an interactive cross between The Amityville Horror and The Exorcist movies.
So what's on your list?
Some of your list is what I'd like to make -
a top down action game like Gauntlet (already made one of these but it could be done so much better than the last time I made it)
a fantasy beat'em up similar to Golden Axe....or Crime Wave
although that's about it, not really interested in making too many other games as I couldn't be bothered learning how they play....
Well :
>Beat them all, like "Streets of rage" ( work in progress here... ).
>Platform 2D action games, like "Ghouls and ghosts", "Metal slug", "Moonwalker" ( genesis ), "Strider", "Flashback".
>Shoot them up, like "Musha alest", "Thunder force 3".
>Funny sports games, Soccer, Basketball, Olympic games.
... Mmmm, I hope I could make them one day ;)
2D internet-multiplayer (incl. AI to play against)
That should keep me going for a while once I get started.
Well, there are ones that I attempted at such as:
- Capcom-style flight combat games
- Virtual Interactive Comic Book-style RPG (yeah, sounds weird, but there are some point-and-click RPGs like this).
- A great drag racing game using that gravity technology track that Prey uses.
- MMO based on the moon where you have to build the first Lunar City (similar to Sim City-style gameplay, only everyone online has a job to do, as well as competitors to try to design their own town on top of yours (like in World of WarCraft, only on the moon in the 24th Century, and not in the Dark Ages in England or whatever WoW takes place in).
Quite a few ideas, I can't really change the world, but I can guarantee that it's for sure that Blizzard may beat me to that lunar MMO idea, I wouldn't be a bit surprised... Maybe Nintendo may use Prey's technology in their next Mario Kart for the Wii to make the cars drive upside down, as long as your speed's up. Also, I know that 1942 and 1943, or Captain Skyhawk are getting old, and there's no top-down flight games out there too much, but I tried to get into that, but that tanked, bigtime. I'm still wondering where these game ideas may come from...
> A game like metal gear solid
> A game similiar to monkey island
Game like MGS, huh? How about Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy and Ubisoft did their best to rival that of Hideo Kojima's best. This is one big showdown of stealth action that there ever was. If I'm not mistaken, in the original Splinter Cell, there WAS a little reference to Kojima's baby in there somewhere, I can't remember where that was. Been a while since I played the original Splinter Cell...
Dungeon Master
System Shock 2
From your list:
*A frenetic 2d platform shooter like Metal Slug. (except maybe more focused on exploring like Turrican and perhaps using my Iron Fist kung fu theme)
*A top-down action game like Gauntlet. (but with more RPG and explore elements but not "heavier" RPG like Zelda etc)
Also a vertical scrolling 2D shooter.
Plus some other weird game ideas I have...and some top secret ones ;-)
Some sort of 3d slot car racing with an 8 or so player online twist would be of interest to me. At least I would not very likely be too bored doing nice models for something like that.
Maybe a drive-about car or 4wd vehicle sim, with nice models and interesting scenery would be a fun project to see to completetion too. Bored with just speed but could easily be interested in off road precision driving sort of thing.
RC scale model boats sim too.
Can't find any coders who'd want to go there with any of that though.
Oh well.
Physics based 2D games, except I'm not good enough at physics or math to pull it off...YET! (sloooowly working on it) Examples would be Dirt Bikes 2D by Brad Quick and Ski Stunt Simulator. Anyone happen to have a free cross-platform 2D physics library for BlitzMax.

I recall that you can use the jv-ode physic plugin for blitzmax to work in 2d. I havent messed with it enough though...
It's interesting to note how most authors are talking about 2D and not 3D games. We should hide this thread from Mark, as he may get wrong ideas about finishing the 3D module. ;-)
Barney
I would like to make:
1. A RTS similar to Age of the Empires 3
2. A Star Wars 3D space shooter
I would like to tell a story and so it would be a adventure or a roleplaying game in a normal or SF scenario. By the way do there exist any good SF role playing games?
Ahm and what i also like are abstract games like the sentinel and stuff like this.
Oh, if I had more to offer, I'd almost be the next Peter Molyneux...
A Final Fantasy 7/8/9 stylie game...
That would be da greatest :D
Mille Bornes...
Xybots from atari consoles..
A 3d Tron style tank game. Oh wait, I am making that...
I always wanted to do a remake of Space Harrier.....I sorta did but never finish. Solaris for the 2600 is also on my list....but laziness and procrastination has overpowered me....
-> Territorial MMORPG (many kingdoms fight eachother for lands)
Always had an idea kicking around for a fast-paced platformer that focused on melee-equipment with a difficulty level in the same vein as the Megaman Zero series for the GBA....starring furry creatures.
(seems no one likes using animals for action games these days)
Also wanted said game to have traditional animated character sprites, none of that 3d crap...problem is, it takes forever to draw out smooth animations (damn those inbetween frames..), especially when you want movement that flows from one action to another. Never really started at all yet because I am not skilled enough to animate at such a level.

I would say that's because it's feasible for a one or two man team to finish a 2D game whereas a 3D game can take a lot more resources. Sure people will buy the 3D module but I bet the ratio of complete games to purchases of the 3D module will be less than complete 2D games to BMax...
I only had 3d presentation in mind...
By the way do there exist any good SF role playing games?
yep: Knights of the Old Republic of course. Also Planescape Torment, sorta sci-fi & fantasy combined...
And Fallout 1 & 2
a cool physics based game Cygnus and I have been considering for a while.
Full metal conflict (Finish what we started with B3D and Aurora)
Fun Racer (With a more modern engine than the B3D prototype, based on the SPEC Miata racing series which is the biggest here in North America).
A hover racer that takes the best of the 2nd wipeout game (controls and fluid surfing like gameplay)
Aerial Antics 2 with mission based gameplay, racing and MP.
Space combat/trading sim with FPS/RPG elements.
Those would all be pretty large indie projects.
a sub sim...
--Mike
you with your sub sim and me with my master of orion-like game. Together we've probably got a full 40 years in on them. :)
So...
Master of Orion-like game
Warlords-like fantasy 4X, turn based game
Various turn based strategy ideas I have percolating including a ship-to-ship sci-fi game that goes into great detail on every portion of the ships...
heeheehehe...
yup... it's sorta stretching out there, isn't it...
some other ideas are mulling around... something a bit simpler and more inline with what the engines i've license can do without too much work... while i'm waiting for that 'perfect' engine to come around...
:)

I would like to make something original....
I would like to make something original....
Sure that would be nice, but I'll content myself with taking the elements from other great games and making a similar game that plays really well and that people enjoy playing. I personally won't make a retro remake as I can't sell it and as game development is now my job, it would be foolish. If I was a hobbyist then maybe I would make a retro remake...but only maybe, I'm still more interested in making a retro-style clone that is really good.
Originality is impossible. There are no new ideas.
Originality is impossible. There are no new ideas.
First said by a person with no originality. :)
*edit*
except of course, the first person that said it, came up with the new idea that there were no new ideas. making that statement a paradox.
Yeah, I'd like to make something totally interactive, yet fun. Now lemme see... Man, I only wish that I'd turn to Peter Molyneux's works, I can really see myself doing games like him. Man, I wish M$ hadn't bought out Lionhead, it's just about as bad, if not worse than when EA bought out Bullfrog to make Molyneux big in the first place, well, deja vu, isn't it? Better hope I won't make the same mistake.
JustLuke, I agree with you, in the bigger picture everything has always been. But in the small picture, with which most people are fascinated, there are some parts that have been shut out, as to seem as though they are newly discoverable, so in the framework of `evolution and change` yes there can be `originality` and `new ideas`.
[Originality is impossible. There are no new ideas.]
Arrgggg...
I'd like to tackle a pinball game [winks knowingly at big10p] - with all the physics plug-ins it would be more a matter of table design (interesting) than technicalities (a bit dull) so would probably get finished; I also wouldn't mind attempting a Snatcher-like adventure with a streamlined interface, but I wonder if it's worth it without voice-overs (no budget for that!) and know for sure that if I developed a good, saleable scenario I would break off development and turn it into a novel instead.
