The TI-99/4a was a superb machine for its day. It's speech module was amazing for the time. Then when Extended BASIC came out for it, it gave you super easy hardware sprites.

But my all time fave oldie is the Vic 20. My first computer I had for my 10th birthday. Fond memories :)

yes, i actually bought one... kept it for a lil while too... cp/m and the same video as the TI-99/4 made it fun to play around with...

the tape drives, and the fact that it had the bad habit of erasing em every now and then made for interesting computing and cursing experiences...

Keyboards were horifyingly expensive add-ons in those days, actually so was tape! Cassette tape at that. Printers and screens were prohibitively priced too. 8" floppies were simply a dream and once in while you'd maybe see one in the flesh. Some people had these things, but not everyone or even most people.

I'm going back to mid-late 70s from rough memory. Something around that time I thnk, it's all a bit blurry now to be honest.

There was a little shop in East Barnet that sold them; A guy called Chris (some sort of DJ come radio presenter I understood) ran it, he (and others) made the darn things. In later years when I'd moved to the South Coast I heard that he'd actually photo copied the main board from another design. I've no idea if that was truth, myth or legend but it made a good yarn that many swapped at club meets around then. I was part of a 5 person syndicate who bought a kit and made it work, eventually and after a fashion! It was a long way from straight forward then, it's almost further from it now in some ways. ;O)

I lusted after a Memotech among others, were they any good? I never did get to find out in person.

Sharp MZ-80K. Not much software for it but a very nice machine to learn on. The only mod I made to it was to cover the screen with a green film so I didnt have a B&W screen but a fancy green screen !

I've also been a fan of Apple during the old days, too. I only wish that I could've had a C64. The TI-99/4A had some cool moments, tho, so I really can't complain too much.

Not exactly a home computer but one of the first computer that had everything integrated (CPU, screen, printer). It also had the best BASIC language there is, there was and there will ever be. Twenty eight years later it's still working and I am using it whenever I need some complicated but quick charting and graphing.

Yeah, how much HP has changed since those old days. Of course, their sister company, Compaq, seemed to have some great PCs during the old days, too.

Just as a side note, Compaq was actually founded by former Texas Instruments employees, if you can believe that. That's quite a surprise to me, IMHO.

Yup. HP went down the drain the moment the company was no longer run by engineers. At one point in time they were synonimous with automated measuring and lab control. Even the legendary calculator division has been dismantled...
