VGA 14-pin and 15-pin question

Hi

I was just wondering why some VGA cables have 15 pins and some have 14?

Tried to find the answer on google but i couldn't find much.

On 1 website it states the 9th pin doesnt do anything so i was guesing that might be why it isnt included on the 14-pin cables but i am not sure so thought i would ask.

I too have noticed this - must be due to the pin becoming obsolete.

It's not connected to anything, therefore it is unnecessary and clearly has been obsoleted. I can only imagine that it was, at some point, easier to manufacture with all the pins in place (I can't think of any other reason it would be there).

IIRC, there are 3 pins that are not connected to anything, which can technically be left off.

Some manufacturers used to even fill them in with plastic in the F connector, so you couldn't plug a 'standard' monitor cable into them... guess it can give them a few extra monitor sales that way, when the generic competition won't fit the socket.
