PRG that RUN at shutdown

How can I see what is going to run at shutdown in Windows XP Pro? Is there some program that would list this stuff... I use RegCleaner and I can see what will run at startup but not shutdown... Hepl!

Isn't shutdown.exe the only thing that gets called when a PC is told to shut itself off?

I wonder... used to be not so... There was a folder called Startup and a folder called Shutdown in earlier versions of Windows. I don't remember if that survived into Win2k or not. Still I wonder what is called to run when windows shuts down... It is a SPYware/MALware question.

I am reasonably sure... and I am also somewhat sure in the 95 there was because I just upgraded a laptop from win95 to 2000 and them there folders was there in the Win95. Then again that machine had been Win3.1 upgraded to 95 and it could have been a legacy issue. Hmmm...

Cygnus you may be running 98 or 95 on some box somewhere... I rarely see those OS anymore... I bow to yer wisdom.

BUT the question needs a qualified answer: WHAT runs at shutdown and HOW do we see...

Hmm, I'm fairly sure that once shutdown has initiated, windows doesn't let any other program start. Programs get asked to close and services clean up as they do so :)

exactly... if you can manage to try to start a program while shutdown.exe is doing it's thing, a box will come up and say something to the effect of: "Blah.exe failed to start because the machine is shutting down."

Hrm... that's not to say that a program couldn't hook into windows and run all the time and simply do something when it sees windows shutting down being requested... do it's thang... then proceed with shutdown.

Well, under SP2 I think updates can install during shutdown - so MS must achieve this somehow prior to power off.
