name to go with the logo.

been trying to come up with a new site design and rebrand of my projects, when ever I do this I always start with a logo.

I then develope the name and site design around that.

The above is what I have so far but dont have a clue about a good name to go with it. anything I seem to come up with is already taken sadly.

What's with the overall shape? It kinda looks like a lemon to me. No offence.

BTW, isn't it more normal to come up with a name before doing a logo?

Try to do it differently.

First decide on a name. It should sound good, be easy to pronounce, and not have 'interesting' meanings in major languages.

Then decide on a logo. One which somehow conveys attributes or characteristics of your 'enterprise'. Remember that simple beats complex almost every time.

Then decide on a website design. Use colours which correspond well with your 'corporate identity' and your logo, and choose a layout which will make your perceived audience feel at home!

I honestly think the logo looks better turned 90 degrees so that the orange/yellow bit is horizontal.

the inner part of the eye is a sunset view from my backdoor. took it a few years ago if i recall.

the shape.. i dunno. just came to me like that.

As for picking a way of doing things, we all do things differently, I bet were all not right handed, or we dont all develope games the same way so why on earth should it matter to anyone that I like to come up with a visual idea and logo first before finding a name to fit it.

plus I end up with tons of nice art i can use for other things in the end.

so keep the names coming.

Umm, I wouldn't exactly say that that thing looks like a logo, at all.

For a logo you need something that is symbolic, not a picture of a ... whatever that is. Sorry.

AngelDeniel possibly because its not finished yet, once I have a name that fits this will also become part of the logo and it will change to fit that.

Geezz man, you ask for some names and all you get is people telling you how to come up with a logo.

yeah first thing I thought was they lord of the rings firey eye. Also Angel Daniel said it ain't a logo and as Big10p said normally it's name then logo later. After all you've got to check for domain names, registered company names and all that before finalising the name and then making a logo...

Ah, so you are going to get the name before finishing the logo. That's what we've been saying. I don't see how you can do it the other way around.

Calm down. How the heck are we supposed to come up with names for you when we know nothing about what the name is for (other than 'a website') or what kind of image you're trying to portray. :/

On a more serious note... :) I just showed my 12 yo twin girls, my wife and my 24 yo eldest daughter the first picture and they all, without exception said it was the Eye in Lord of the Rings....

Soooooo it's possible it could deflect notice to the LOR peeps and not your goodself. Which is contrary to what a Logo is meant to do.

TBH with you guys the LOR wasnt in my mind until i posted this. but now that you all mention it i really doo see it.

could have been something on TV or one of the books on my shelf that planted the basic idea in my head the other night.

I have a sproket image im playing with. toying with the idea of sproket games, not sure tho. i might be posting a new pic for you all to slag and rip to bits... i promise it want be a lemon shape.

- look at some typical logos - bullfrog, muckyfoot,lionhead,
relic...blah blah...they are all
simple n clean.

and trying to come up with a clean concept..dont turn things
arse about first...it nearly never works..

Come up with a name that means something to you and go from there... Peter Kennedy and I started Suspension Software in 1987 just out of college... Why did we pick "Suspension Software???" Well we were filling out the info cards for one of Borlands products and there was a balnk for NAME OF COMPANY: so I asked Peter what we were gonna call our software company... Peter said "Don't tell them... keep them in suspense!" Suspension Software was a born that day!

It could be your favorite food... a weird name for a body part... Something stupid you said or overheard... doesn't matter as long as poeple can remember it and you can gett he .COM name registered to you!

christ sake, what is about you guys that doesnt get I do things my own way, as for almost never working, I can assure you it alwasys does work for me, with only minor changes.

does that fact that I(ME) like to come up with an image first really upset you ? if it does you really need to take a deep breath.

I personaly write a synopsis of the companies function and aims, then choose a company name, prior to designing logo's.

IMHO: Logo's have to look good AND be familiar on company stationery as well as the website, so the less complicated the image the better.

But that is just my way and we all have our own way of doing things.

That graphic looks corrupted. It's not a good logo.

It looks like you forgot to save out the alpha.

I wuld also shrink it a bit (about 1 inch/ 3cm etc...) that way you can use it as an ICON for yer games!

A good logo isn't just a pretty shape, it needs to be versatile for use in a variety of situations.

-Can it be reduced to two-tone, for letterheads, etc., or a watermark
-Is it simple? A good example is the Windows 95 logo vs. the Windows XP logo. The 95 one was bitty (the window shape had a trail hanging off it made of dots) whereas the XP logo has been reduced to four clear shapes. Looks much better on the keyboard and on the start button, and is quite bold and recognisable.
-Is it a shape that someone can remember?

I know you didn't ask for a critique of the the logo, but... uhm... I don't really have a way to finish this sentence.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was stomping all over your nice image. The thing is this. ... If you are going to have a logo it's because it's some kind of *symbol* that represents yourself or your company. A symbol is meant to be something that alludes to the nature of what it represents. That means that when someone looks at it they should be able to discern a fairly good overview impresion of your company just by the way the logo looks. In the holographic sense, since symbols are a feature of holograms, `all` of the characteristics of your company and the personality you want to put forward, should be represented in the `part`, which is the logo. At the moment the image you created doesn't really tell anyone anything. It's hard to even tell what it is, in its own right, yet alone that it might allude to or represent a company. Not that there are words missing, but if you're going to symbolise something you've got to allow the viewer to `read into it` to get an impression of what it represents. At the moment there is very little that you can read into it, since it is so obscure that the viewers attention stops at trying to decipher the image, yet alone that they might look past the image to its meaning and representation. You'll notice most people have been trying to figure out what the image actually IS, yet alone finding it intuitive enough and symbolic enough that they stop dwelling on trying to understand it and actually can look past it to the *impression* that it gives. I think that's the main reason why it fails as a logo, not that your graphics skills are poor or that your personal preferences are invalid. It's also hard to use `art` that doesn't represent something interpretable to the viewer, as a logo. You can make an artistic logo, but it has to speak to the viewer. This logo doesn't do that, except maybe to say that you see more meaning in it than most viewers will see, or that you created a work of art hoping it would be a good logo. But think more symbolic perhaps.

Maybe if you're still working on the logo you could show us the progress with it and then we can give an updated opinion about it.
