6600GT - What Drivers?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/6600GT - What Drivers?

It's a popular card, so there must be a few people around here running one. What driver version are you using, and how's it working for you?

Having jinxed myself by saying I didn't see anything wrong with Nvidia's drivers, I've since had a nasty few weeks trying various versions without much success. It all started with Dreamfall : The Longest Journey ( great game, but will only run with one version of Nvidia's drivers ) The version I downloaded for that started causing HalfLife2 Ep 1 to BSOD occasionally, so now the newer non-beta drivers are out, I got those. Now I'm getting BSOD's in Condemned: Criminal Origins, and GRAW seems to kill any version of the Nvidia drivers I throw at it ( though no BSOD's.. just a crash to desktop and a DX9 failed to create vertex buffer error ( so it's drivers again! ) and although it's been playing perfectly for a couple of days, today Hitman Blood Money shutdown unexpectedly. Could be coincidence, but I'm thinking it could be these damn drivers.

I've carelessly forgotten which version I was using so happily before Dreamfall came along and forced me to upgrade to beta drivers, so I'm hoping if someone else is having no problems with their 6600GT's drivers, I may be able to use the same driver version as them.

I'm not averse to using Non-Nvidia drivers either. Not since all this faffing around they've caused.

I have the latest drivers (non-beta) for my 6600GT and have had no problems with GRAW or Half Life 2. I don't have the other games you listed. (well GRAW demo runs like a pig, but I don't think it's the graphics driver causing that problem)

latest drivers are a nightmare on my pc, they kept locking up the pc when i exited a blitz full screen program.

I just upgraded to a 7600GS and I installed the latest drivers and I've been having issues in Counterstrike with either no decals appearing in DirectX mode, or HUD effects that use add blending appearing solid when they go to fade out in OpenGL.

yea the latest drivers are abit pants. They keep pestering me about SLI stuff every restart, but my mobo and card don't have anything SLI on them :S

I also have a 6600GT (XFX). Of well, just wait a couple of days and there will probably be a fix.

no probs here on my 6600GT with the games I tried recently. None of the games I tried were on your list though.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Another annoyance.

Well maybe I'll find one of those driver uninstallers to make sure I cleaned every trace of the beta drivers out and then reinstall one of the 8x.xx drivers, which I'm pretty sure were the ones that gave me no problems at all.

You too? I forgot that one. I thought I screwed it up when I had my monitor plugged into the wrong port and it thought I was using screen cloning, and that caused the SLI error. But apparently not. I guess I should find some older drivers to install.

I have a XFX 6600gt at 555/1111 and the 91.31 drivers. They work great.
Make sure you clean ot all traces of the old drivers before installing any new ones. Safe Mode and driver cleaner seem to do it for me and I never seem to have the problems others report. Could be lucky, I guess.

Using 84.21 on my 6800GT here, no probs at all aside from a couple masking issues in Final Fantasy XI.
(I blame the graphics engine they used for the game more then nVidia, that problem been there for quite a few sets of drivers now on this card)

Have a GT6600, too (MSI). Using the oldest driver possible (that means keeping old driver until a problem with a new game occurs) everything runs fine on my machine. Until last month I used 77.77 without any problems. So, never change a running system ;)

HL2 works fine with 77.77 for me.

Ding! Those are one of the ones I downloaded, so maybe those are the ones I was so happy with.

I don't normally bother, since Nvidia drivers are "supposed" to be fully removed with XP, but that's precisely what I had in mind to do this time, as I'm convinced that two drivers have become intertwined here somewhere.

Yeah, funny thing drivers. When 91.31 came out I just installed them and most stuff seemed OK. Then I played Oblivion and started having black screen problems. I uninstalled all traces of Nvidia video drivers in safe mode. Re- installed and low and behold ... no more problems in Oblivion. I now believe that, yes, the drivers can become intertwined and not in a good way :)

84.21 here with no issues
