I think a few of you already found out.
But I'll hereby tell you anyway, to take all doubt away.
I've recently changed my name from "Tricrokra" to "Tricky".
I wasn't happy with my old name from the start, it was a name I took on simply because it wasn't already taken when I created my hotmail account. Before I knew it I was famous on a few sites under that name, and so I kept it.
Since that fame is something of the past I didn't see to much harm to change my name now.
From now on, I'll be Tricky.
You may still see my old name on other sites (like codersworkshop and GameFAQs to name a few), but I'll try to get that fixed soon.
So far this notice ;)
> Before I knew it I was famous on a few sites
> under that name, and so I kept it.
Are you famous here? I can't remember.
That depends on what you mean by "Famous".
I didn't mean this site. The sites I'm talking about no longer exist.
Are you famous here? I can't remember.
You clearly never heard "ooowhere's da shhtart.."
Hiy Tricky,
I remember you - so you must be a little bit famous... or is that infamous?
IPete2.
You clearly never heard "ooowhere's da shhtart.."
I have, and the memory of it still brings a smile to my face. I wish I still had a copy of the song.
I also seem to remember Tricky asking for feedback on
The Fairy Tale (the game that the above song was written for) and then becoming extremely angry/stressed/defensive when people gave him their honest opinions about it. So I guess he is a little famous even here.
What ever happened to
The Fairy Tale, Tricky? And would you share your song with us again?
:)
Choosing the right name can be tricky :)
You're lucky he didn't decide to call himself 'Rokraky' or that joke just wouldn't have worked.
Nope, "Choosing the right name can be rokraky :)" would only have caused bemused expressions and the scratching of heads.

Why is this inane thread still here? :)
If you have to ask that question then you are not ready to know the answer. But don't be discouraged because curiosity is the first step towards enlightenment.
For now, consider this:
Knowing others is intelligence;
knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength;
mastering yourself is true power.
If you realise that you have enough,
you are truly rich.
If you stay in the centre
and embrace death with your whole heart,
you will endure forever.
So said Lao Tzu. Look inward, ENAY, for the answers to your questions.
Give me a 'W'!
Give me a 'T'!
Give me an 'F'!
Gimme, gimme, gimme. Didn't your mother ever teach you to say please?
Don't worry, big10p, there's no shame in so bravely admitting your lack of comprehension. As Lao Tzu quite rightly said, Not-knowing is true knowledge. Presuming to know is a disease.
"All I know is I know what I know - and I don't know much about that"
Henry's cat circa 1980
Hm, interesting. It seems that Henry's Cat is neatly sumarising the quantum theory principle of superposition, more commonly known as Schrodinger's cat.
You know the one:
"We place a cat into a steel chamber, along with a device containing a vial of hydrocyanic acid. There is, in the chamber, a very small amount of a radioactive substance. If even a single atom of the substance decays during the test period, a relay mechanism will trip a hammer, which will, in turn, break the vial and kill the cat. The observer cannot know whether or not an atom of the substance has decayed, and consequently, cannot know whether the vial has been broken, the hydrocyanic acid released, and the cat is killed. Since we cannot know, the cat is both dead and alive according to quantum law, in a superposition of states. It is only when we break open the box and learn the condition of the cat that the superposition is lost, and it becomes one or the other (dead or alive). This situation is sometimes called quantum indeterminacy or the observer's paradox: the observation or measurement itself affects an outcome, so that it can never be known what the outcome would have been if it were not observed."
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci341236,00.html
From Lao Tzu to Quantum Theory. Boy, this thread has everything! I suspect that the meaning of life can be found somewhere between the two.
This situation is sometimes called quantum indeterminacy or the observer's paradox
Its also known as b*ll*cks, its quantum thorists trying to sound clever, just because we don't know the state of the cat doesn't mean it isn't dead. Because I don't observe something doesn't mean it hasn't happened, or indeed has happened, if I drop a shoe out of the window the above theory means it doesn't hit the ground until I look out of the window to observe it, the universe isn't going to hang around waiting for me to look at the shoe.
Also why does stuff happen, for example how can a plane fly over my house, I haven't watched it take off, fly along its route, until it actually gets quite close I don't know that plane exists and yet it happily goes about its business.
Quatum theory is cobblers, they need to go out and get a real job because what they are doing is a waste of time.
Don't worry, big10p, there's no shame in so bravely admitting your lack of comprehension. As Lao Tzu quite rightly said, Not-knowing is true knowledge. Presuming to know is a disease.
Careful, you're starting to sound like Red Ocktober. Are you related? :P
P.S. Ignorance is bliss!
> Careful, you're starting to sound like
> Red Ocktober. Are you related? :P
He can't be, this guy uses correct punctuation.
According to quantum theory JustLuke IS Red Okctober and both the dead/alive cat.
...this guy uses correct punctuation.
Of course I do... correct punctuation is very... important. :D
Actually, I once thought about adopting Red's punctuation style and adding a stutter to create a cute, quirky writing style of my own, but... but... but... but... I think that it... it... it... might be a bit... an... an... an... annoying.
What is this "ooowhere's da shhtart.." song anyway?
Some sort of personal joke?
What is this "ooowhere's da shhtart.." song anyway?
Some sort of personal joke?
Some music from "The Fairy Tale".
It crops up on IRC every once in a while and we all have a laugh. Some people still have the MP3 file and pass it around to those who don't.
All together now....
"a-wheeeeeres the schtart... a-wheeeeeres the schtart o fanaseeeeeeee... o fanaseeeeeeeee awerawera-wheeeres the schtart etc"
:)
I'm most famous boy in Japan, but noone recognize me except chicks...but hey..thats coooll :)
I wish I still had the MP3. It's a long time since I heard it, but I have vague memories of bad rapping (but is there any other?) about fairies...
I'll bet it's a really good song and you're just being mean about it.
How did you see through my deception? You're right. The song is great.
Somebody needs to post a link to it.
I have never heard this music everyone is talking about - I feel this is most unfair.
I can't wait for Cobra to come out and then I will have lots of new friends who will think I am great and who will let me listen to stuff too. Plus, we will have Off Topic.
Tricky needs to stop being so cruel and reshare the song with his blitz friends!
and then becoming extremely angry/stressed/defensive when people gave him their honest opinions about it.
All I remember getting angry about was getting a little worked up by people only farting on the graphics (which were merely placeovers that had to be replaced as was stated in my feedback request). If you guys didn't experience it that way, then please acccept my appologies.
You clearly never heard "ooowhere's da shhtart.."
Is my English pronouncing that bad?
Yes that song called "The Start To Fantasy" was sung by me. (I even wrote the lyrics).
What ever happened to The Fairy Tale, Tricky? And would you share your song with us again?
A hard drive crash was almost the end of this project. Luckily I had an older copy of it on an old system which contained 80% of the game (as it was before the crash). I'm currently playing the game from A to Z to see how much damage is done, and I've converted the source from BlitzBasic (which it was originally written it) to BlitzMax in the process. Now the next version will be available in both Windows and MacOS X (on which I cannot give guarantees for Intel Macs since I don't have one) :(
About that song. Sure, I'll see if I can find a place to store it on. Finding a good place to store songs has been really hard for me.
Tricky needs to stop being so cruel and reshare the song with his blitz friends!
Find me a (free) server to store it on, and I'll see what I can do ;)
Choosing the right name can be tricky :)
LOL! You got that right ;)
Why is this inane thread still here? :)
What's "inane"?

"a-wheeeeeres the schtart... a-wheeeeeres the schtart o fanaseeeeeeee... o fanaseeeeeeeee awerawera-wheeeres the schtart etc"
Is my english that ugly or is it my singing?
I admit, I ain't the greatest singer in the world.
Would never come pass the first round of Idols (not that I take that silly program seriously).
I wish I still had the MP3. It's a long time since I heard it, but I have vague memories of bad rapping (but is there any other?) about fairies...
Pretty obvious that it would be about fairies for a game called "The Fairy Tale", which already had a double meaning

.
You remark of the rapping is a bit vague. Do you hate
my rapping, or do you hate rapping in general?
I'll bet it's a really good song and you're just being mean about it.
Thanks. Shall I say, I do think the song itself is good, but I need to face facts when it comes to my voice. I can sing alittle, and that's all there's to say. I ain't got a great singing voice, and lack of focussing can cause some false notes. I must also admit that the way this song was recorded was also a bit amateuristic, but hey, I ain't got the cash to hire a studio.

How did you see through my deception? You're right. The song is great.
Forgive me when I sound too distrusting.
But.... Are you serious?
I have never heard this music everyone is talking about - I feel this is most unfair.
I really need to get that song, on-line, don't I.
Honestly, I think that the song needs work.
Perhaps, since you acknowledge that you can't sing, you should consider finding someone who can to cover the song for you? Or make it solely instrumental? One thing's for sure, I admire your perseverence.
We've tried to make a version in which I did the rapping and my girl-friend (who
can sing, at least much better than I can) did the singing parts. We did have good results when we did this with no recording and stuff. But when recording things turned out really bad. I don't know why, but the Mic simply didn't pick up her voice, and we still don't know what caused it, it must be a Windows thing, since my Mac does pick up her voice, but on Mac only the internal Mic is registered by the software I have (audacity), and that is a horrible solution for recordings like these. (Ain't got a clue why the external Mic isn't taken. Putting audio devices in the input line do not work either, while the output DOES work). And as I said before, hiring a studio will be too expensive for me. If it wasn't I would already have done that.
An entirely instrumental version is already there. In fact that version is used as background music on serveral spots in the game. (The city of Vandar where the hero Jake starts the game for example).
If I can ever manage to make a good recording with my GF singing, I'll announce it. Now only a way to get the damn song on line without making too much costs. My TBBS server is too small for that
Tricky. What type of Mic are you using?
(Hopefully something a little more than a Boundary mic, which for PC, requires power from the mic socket- something that not all cards give. Onboard cards are normally fine. My Aureon 7.1 however, doesn't work.)
Either way, it shouldn't need more than a new sound card at most, since in the worst case that could be broken- You already know your Mic works OK, right? :)
Oh and
www.soundclick.com
Nothing wrong with the Mic. Tested it on all computers I have, only the Mac doesn't accept it. I cannot really imagine my Mac would be broken in that, since I don't have that thing too long, but I'll try to get info from the store who sold that thing to me. Or maybe I'm a dumbo with Mac configuration, I doubt that is the true problem). Since other devices aren't taken as well, I doubt buying a new Mic will solve the problem.
Hmm, but I never mentioned the Mac ;) Or buying a new Mic...?
It may be in the Audacity settings somewhere. I'm not home now so I can't remember :)
Well...
I'll sort that out later.
There's more priority to get the game working again, at this moment ;)
hey... how'd my name get involved in way up there!!!
:)
Tricky reminds me of former President Nixon... Trickora had more character to it...
or something...

And as I said before, hiring a studio will be too expensive for me. If it wasn't I would already have done that.
Tricky - you don't need to hire a studio. There are many affordable digital multitrack recording devices available now that are extremely good. For example the Zoom PS04 is a 4 track (40 virtual tracks) digital multitracker with Drum Machine, Bass machine, Guitar, Keyboard & vocal effects and is only round about the $199 mark and literally fits in the palm of your hand. It also has a built -in condenser mic which is perfect for vocals.
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PS04/http://www.zzounds.com/item--ZOMPS04
$199, eh... That comes close to €189 which I need now for my driving lisence exam. But, indeed, it sounds affordable once I got that damn lisence. (I know a car is expensive too, but together with my GF I already got one).
Tricky reminds me of former President Nixon... Trickora had more character to it...
Well, "Tricrokra" did serve me well to give me a unique identity of a name nobody can spell, like demonstrated above. :P Also got a lot of trouble along my relatives and friends when they want to send me an e-mail since my mail adres also contains that name. And a lot more. I never liked the name as long as I have it. It was meant as a name to use on a site I'd only visit once. That turned out diffrently, and with the "fame" (on that site) that came with it (the old user Trente Trois still knows me from that site) I was tied on that. I've been thinking to change that name for a long time, as I hated it more and more. A security matter on my TBBS site required me to take a new account there, and that was for me the perfect time to change my name. I chose "Tricky", just to be close to my old name. I must say, now that I got rid of it, I don't regret it, but still miss my old name a little.
Ah, I'll get used to it, I'm sure.
I must say, that I'm surprised that this tread lasted so long ;)
Let us know when you've uploaded that tune everyone's talking about.
I'll do that.
I need a server to host it on first.
When I found one, I'll let you know ;)
Yeah, just like me, I was 8IronBob, but changed to my game design name to get into multimedia applications as well as games. After all, I sort of try to get into about the same type of game design that Tsunami Media was into, however, I use comic book designs, and then you choose how you want to tell the comic book story, a la an RPG. That's a great way to make it. I see where you're coming from, Tricky, a new screen name = new persona in game and media design. I think that's a great idea. Good luck to you!
Hurrah! I just got to hear the tune, at last - Noel posted it on IRC. Pity he's banned here - it's awesome! :P
> Pity he's banned here
No it isn't, the forums have been great lately. :)
> it's awesome! :P
Does IRC prevent that well known internet cliche of save, upload, post link into forum? :)
<gone>
Available for a limited time only! i.e. until ENAY has confirmed here that he's heard it - I haven't got the bandwidth to host it permanently. Message ends.
WTF|. *bounces around in tears*
"Ooohwhersh the shtart! Ooohoohwhersh the shtart!"
big10p, you've made my day!
Get it while it's hot, folks! :P
I don't know why, but the mic simply didn't pick up her voice
Automatic Noise Cancellation? :-)
Seriously, poke around in your sound configuration thingamajigs in the control panel. Some soundcard drivers do have a software-based noise cancellation option, which may be turned on and mess with your sound input.
Blimey, that's bordering on genius. A female voice in the non 'rapping' bits just might work.
big10p: THANKS for that :P
Tricky: I'd like to take a look at your game. Your links FORBID me to access your servers (as Apache is returning)
I can appreciate anyone's work in game development. It's not easy to work within the realms that you feel uncomfortable working in (no matter where or what). Some people can code, while others have musical ability, and others can draw. I can do the first two, and on an extremely blue moon, I can whip out a good stick-figure :)
A buddy of mine and I are working on an Action/Adventure game (details not yet released) where he is doing all the graphics, while I am writing the brundt of the code. We haven't figured out anything for music yet. He has an idea of someone that has more musical abilities than either of us that might be interested in helping out :)
A few years back, I wrote a game in VB.NET 1.1, to learn VB's OOP stuff. It was actually an extremely loose remake of Tank vs UFO (same name) found in the old Commodore VIC-20 user manual/programmer's reference - I actually did it out of memory, not having a manual at hand. The music I ripped from a freeware package, and the sound-effects I actually created myself (which I believe the sounds and music are rather good). I drew the graphics, and you could tell. I laugh at them still today. They are quite nasty looking, BUT...
We have this "bring your kid to work" day each year at work. I happen to be one of the few people that have to "show and tell" about what I do. I thought I made the mistake of showing that game... I am a professional application developer. The kids saw the game, and were excited about it. That was the first year.
The next year, they came back requesting me to show the game again! This time, I was offered suggestions, Ideas for game play, and features, etc. Needless to say, I was floored!! Bossman and I joked about how I should "stop writing production code" and continue with the changes for the game. It was funny.
The sad part is the game was written using GDI+, mmplayer, and its VB. (Yes, I professionaly write with VB.NET - its primarily database work)
My point? Well, I just wanted to add my support for your efforts even if it didn't turn out how you'd have liked. IF anyone would like to take a peak at my own follies, feel free to contact me. I 'd be happy to "make your day" :)
Someday, I'll create a website of my own, and post all the fun stuff I worked on over the years. Much of it is junk. But of all that junk came knowledge, and knowledge turned into cash.
Who knows... Maybe "Tank vs UFO" would be a hit!?!? LOL
<GitTech is dancing on the music> :-D
Hey, I like it! :)
Alright. This thread may be months old, and it may be a bit late. But people requested me to upload my song "The Start To Fantasy".
http://www.badongo.com/file/1590752Click on this link and follow the instructions on the screen to download the track. I say once again, I ain't a great singing talent, but I hope you like it nevertheless.
I don't know why, but I find it incredibly catchy, one of those tunes you can't easily get out of your head once you listen too. It's quite innovative where you elongate the L part on Tail for about 2~3 seconds, interesting.
"One of those tunes... " which make whatever you're drinking come out your nose.
Has a very unique style and character. If it were recorded properly with correct levels and reverb/delay effects on the voice it would make a world of difference and would smooth out some of the imperfections.
I take it as more of a musical narrative than just a song and as such is suits a fantasy type game very well.
Not bad. The out of tune guitar? arpeggio is really grating on the ears though.
Your voice reminds me of a guy named "Mortiis" - namely his singing on the album "The Smell of Rain."
Ricky is right - with a bit of work this could be polished into a nice song.
Oh, and the 2 bars of relative silence right before you bust into the chorus are EXTREMELY anti-climatic. You build up some tension and momentum with the lines "and you're going to see a very new start of true fantasy" and then you kill that momentum with those 2 bland bars before the chorus. Revising that will have a lot of impact on the song, IMO.
Just trying to offer constructive criticism. ;)
Thanks Ricky.
I must admit, I ain't got the right stuff to make such recordings properly, so yes, the recording is far from perfect.
@tonyg
That's one of those comments which make whatever you're drinking come out of your nose.
"One of those tunes... " which make whatever you're drinking come out your nose.
You wouldnt believe how funny I find that quote!!! :D My sides are killing!
Dabz
.... I remember reading about this song months ago on this same thread... It was worth the wait...
However... don't delude yourself. You can't carry a tune at all, please please... I'm telling you this for your own good.
I know what I can an cannot do when it comes to singing.
Trust me, I do better than some guys who make a living out of "singing", so proof is delivered that talent is not a requirement these days.
I'll also say that I have done better than this in the past, but singing requires a lot of me, so carrying a tune is kinda hard for me.
No I've no illusions that I'll replace great names with my voice, and I know I'll never make it into Idols are any crappy show like that. And I know that this song would be a lot better with a difrent singer.
But at the time of recording (and that's still the case till today) I didn't have anyone else to do it. I wouldn't call the result "crap", but I already said it myself, I ain't a great singer, and I'll probably never be (unless I can afford a good singing teacher, which I can't).
For the time being the song will do fine, and when I can make a recording with a better singer, I'll upload it, as well.
The song is very good - the vocal performance not as good - but as I stated before with good recording technique and a few effects it would sound a whole lot better. You also need to take into consideration that this is not a stand alone song - it is designed for a game - the character of the voice and its imperfections actually make it quite appealing - as if it were being sung by one of the characters. In a lot of musical films the actual vocal performance of the songs are not great but they fit in with the character or the story.
It takes a lot of guts to put your voice to a song - especially in a language that is not your mother tongue - and put it out there for people to hear - kudos Tricky !
You wouldnt believe how funny I find that quote!!! :D My sides are killing!
Im glad I wasnt the only one. Sick, sick, sick. LOL
(update) Heard the song T, I like it.It does have that mystical sound to it. A little work and I think it would be great. But honestly, if its used for fantasy, leave the voice alone. It fits what you intended it for. Although because of some comments, I laughed a little too.
www.badongo.com/file/1590752
REPENT!
Your reasoning makes a lot of sense to me Ricky. And indeed. I ain't a great singer, but the song serves its purpose quite well, and that was indeed what the song was written for. Thanks again for your kind comments.
The song lyrics are great, but you know. I don't see anyone else here writing any songs, or even attempting too!
All credit to Tricroka for having a go, I'd like to see any one else try to better that.
Ya, what Enay said!
When I sing, the closest I can compare it too is like a male cat getting neutered with a cheese grater! Honest, I'm that bad! :D
That's why you'll never find me in the Top 40! :)
All credit to Tricroka for having a go, I'd like to see any one else try to better that.
yep, I agree, and anyway's, David Bedingfield made his first song in his bedroom, so why not tricky! ;)
Dabz
I don't know if I'm good enough to reach the Top 40 either. But on the other hand, when I listen what's in the top 40 today, I know that talent is no requirement, so maybe I've got a change, or even stronger, maybe my song isn't crappy enough.
@ENAY
Now you mention it. I didn't hear songs from somebody else around here. I did hear some instrumental tunes from some people, but no actual songs. Hehe...
REPENT!
I have. Tricky, I played it once to my 10yr old nephew and 7 yr old neice ONCE, and they havnt stopped singing it. I downloaded it to see what he thinks and the two of them played it about 20 times. They think it different and they hope you keep it the way it is. And by the way, they want to know if your doing another song. Like fantasy part 2.
