Free Models

Why dont the arms industry release models of all their products. Then people like us could download them, stick them in shareware games, (Or whatever), and bingo instant adverts.

In fact why dont all the car manufactures do the same, then again they to, could have free adverts

I can download pictures of Jupiter, Height maps of the moon, position data on 10,000 asteroids, and Im almost shore you can get a model of the shuttle.

In fact there should be an proper "Electronic" Edition of Jane's Tanks, (Or Planes, Or whatever), with 3d models in a seletion of sizes and format.

Ummm, I think Ill go and do a search for that Jane's thing.

A serious question so a serious answer.

First - This would not allow them to control the image of their product, can't have a lamborghini being shown as the normal car of smalltown USA.

Second - This would not allow them to make money off the image, although with car companies I thought they paid to have product placement, didn't Mercedes Benz pay to have their cars in a couple of Bond movies for instance?

One that looks they whey customer expects it to look ;) So I guess you meant you want quallity modeles and not crap free models that you btw can find on the internet ;) there are plently of them but none comes with kick ass textures that you would expect to see, so you consider them crap and want functional models ;)

If you really need good models you must invest just like in everything else, if you got a good idea and belive in it you will have to have quallity models to make it come close to reallity ;)

I Think thats probably true in a fps.

But in a RTS or TBS, the model is only in the inventery cataloge. So for people produceing RTSs or TBSs the model would be used to represent exactly what it is, a model of the thing. (If you see what I mean)

Because they can generate more revenue by licencing their trademarks.

This is why the only Ford cars in, say, GT4, are USA models. Ford UK wouldn't even let something as visible as the Gran Turismo brand carry their name.

And with right, if they did what H&K asked and gave it for free to public their image could as well be hurt, somebody only needs to make something for example pornographics with it and publish it and this maight not be good publicism at all or something that company wishes to affilliate with ;)

Oh yea, cos people who make "Pornographics" are really worried about copyright, so If you dont give them permission they wont use it ;)

they wouldn't care about that, and they wouldn't care about helping some indies by providing free models, they are in their own world are are probably not even aware of our indie world, and if they were they would still not care since they already make money, and not by selling m16 to you and me but to selling m16 to USa army or any other army in the world. Son as I already said you want quallity models you gotta pay ;)

In Counter-strike 1.5 or lower (the non-commercial version) If you downloaded it you would get the real gun names in console and in the buy menu, but if you were to buy the boxed version from a shop then they would change the name of the guns. This may have something to do with buying licences to the gun names?

Any self respecting weapons maker would be simply horrified at being involved in porn of any sort.

It would imply that people can actually get along together at some level and that could so detract from the killing. Completely off message!

No good to them at all is that sort of publicity; imagine if "getting along" caught on as a general concept, they could possibly even go bankrupt eventually. Useless.

What GFK said and also when they DO allow (for $$$) use of they logos and model names just guess if they are breakable? Noooo... that would mean that Ford Exploder actually would injure the driver and they don't want THAT kind of publicity - even for free.

Same goes for arms industry... how would you feel when someone makes a game about serial killers who proudly uses exclusively H&K weapons because "they get the job done"? Yup, you guessed it.

Well there ain't that much games outside of the mainstream.
Serial Killer and Massmurder games are by the way totally mainstream, so that is no point. Only eg. a political game, a terror sim or somthing would be way outside and I am pretty sure a lot of people would try to stop it.

But in fact some car manufactors already have some kind of joint venture coproductions with some, SOME games designers. Like eg. Mercedes. The reason why is they cannot stop them from making their own car models. So mercedes is trying to make the best out of it, by assisting the games designers, not only with lowpoly versions of the original models, but also with tech info including physics data.

The "weapons industry" at the other hand don't cares that much about the games scene, although they already utilize this medium, as seen in "the american army" and more, not so official recruiting propaganda games.

But the model design has the least significance in this relation. Real Tank models from the manufactours are way too much detailed and are used in cnc milling processes, absolutely useless for games design. You're better off modeling them from scratch.

The same goes for small arms, and here you even ain't got confidence issues like with say modern tanks. You want an original AK47 3ds? No problem. But for games design again useless.
