Darkstar Demo anyone?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Darkstar Demo anyone?

Hi!

Has anyone tested the demo (1 GB!) yet?

It's a kind of privateer / wing commander game.
Looks nice.

1GB for a demo? No thanks :)

Is it based on the film?

"Wanna blow it up?" :P

Don't know the film, but I doubt it.

It'll take better screenshots than that to persuade me to spend 1gb of bandwidth on a demo.

The screenies could be the best I've ever seen and I still wouldn't download 1 gig demo! :) It's ridiculous.

GfK, I agree and they aren't doing themselves any favours with those fuzzy, muddy screenshots either.

Also the "a young rookie investigates the mysterious death of his father" plotline is very tired and only slightly less cliched than "the hero waking up with amnesia..."

Boring, unappealing and an unreasonably large download for a demo.

Pfft. I'll get it. What's a freakin gig? An hour or so download? Whiny little bizzles. :)

An hour or so download?

More like 5 days for me. :)

I'm running about 40% speed right now... damn cable company is "upgrading". Normally I'd be looking at more like 25-30 minutes. :)

I tried it. There's no tutorial or manual on what to do. So I was just sort of flying around shooting stuff that I wasn't supposed to. :) It looks like fun but without any guidance I have no clue how to play it.

On a sidenote: kind of humorous that we're told that casual games *HAVE* to be 15meg to be viable. But here we have a 2 level DEMO that clocks in at over 920 meg!!!

I still have 26.4 kbs. :'( I'm a mile out of range for a cable company. :/ I think a wireless company is moving out here soon. That's 1.5mbs I think. If that ever does then I think I might download the demo to this game.

Well you can't sell apples to people who came to buy t-shirts. You're talking about utterly different markets.

No padlock view!

What kind of a 'space fighter' has you sitting stock still, staring straight ahead? XWing Alliance, which had padlock view and good targetting controls, really made you feel you were in a cockpit. With no padlock, the gameplay just becomes an exercise in screen scrolling...

I agree, a padlock view would be nice.

After playing it for a little while I got a handle on it. Very nice. A serious tool for losing countless hours. I might have to pick this one up.

Wow, one gig for a demo, that is a lot of bandwidth, especially for people that's capped or on a 'fair use policy' thingy.

To big for me, I'm on the auld dial-up waiting for a fatter pipe, which should be switched on in 15 days time! :)

@Dustin. You have to take on missions from the terminal.

There are flight instructors etc pp.
So you will learn the basic game mechanics. Fight/Fly/Trade etc.

Don't know about the "looks nice" part but I'll DL it... 2 hours and counting, 121kb/s... crap speed but I can wait outside with a can of beer, it's sunny and hot (+27 degrees). :)
