Have you touched your pc's hard drive? I touched my Maxtor ones and they could burn my skin! I don't want fans cooling my HD, my pc is loud enough. I'll just stick a plastic bag with water...

You want me to stick a piece of metal to hold the heat inside! The idea of putting a piece of metal to "cool" it down is stupid. It might be cold for a little bit but then it will retain the heat instead of letting go out!

uh... no. Copper is a very good conductor which means it will help draw the heat away from the hard drive, resulting in a cooler drive (although the copper will still feel as warm as your HDD did).

Constantly hot hard-drives are a common cause for them to fail - some PC cases seem designed to keep a hard-drive as hot as it can get.

I do class this as something to worry about - my own gaming PC worries me in this area - I take the side off every so often in the hope that doing so lets hot air escape. My hard-drive bays are sealed compartments with only 1 side open which happens to be facing the side panel - so when the side door of the pc is shut the hard-drives are baking away.

The HDD and the copper will be at the same temp. So if it feels as warm as your HDD did, then your HDD is the same temp as it was before you put the copper on it.

Surely they would only be as warm as each other if they have the same thermal conductivity, hence the reason for using copper over say, steel?

The heatsink also allows more heat to dissipate due to the extra surface area which the cooling fins give.

The heatsink becomes warmer and the drive becomes cooler. The heat output from a drive cannot heat the copper heatsink and the drive up to the same temp as if there was no heatsink. That's like saying that a 1000w heater can heat a 10 foot area to the same temp as a 20 foot area.

Are you running Vista by any chance?

If you install SpeedFan you can monitor the temperature of the harddrive.
My Maxtors temperature was always very high (65 deg).
When I tried a heatsink device it only brought the temperature down by a few degrees.

I switched to a Seagate hard drive.
The Seagate remains relatively cool (35-45 ish) and is significantly quieter too.

There's a reason the manufacturers have put pieces of metal on your CPU and GPU. They're called heatsinks and I wouldn't recommend removing them.

Handy tip: back up all your important data right away, and keep doing so.

Both of my two Maxtor drives failed on me, both within only a year or two of purchase, while my brother's Maxtor drive also died recently (only about a year old), though we managed to revive that one by putting the circuit board off my old drive onto it (same model). I'll never buy a [a http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=maxtor+unreliable]Maxtor drive[/a] ever again, however cheap they are for the size -- I've lost tons of cool stuff!

Gotta agree with you James. Same experience ..
2 Maxtor hard drives. Both of mine died far too quickly. Probably less than 4 months for the last one.

I personally recommend Seagate drives. As I mentioned above they stay cool and are much quieter in operation.
Never had any problems with them so far.

My PC locked up the other day, an obvious 'clunk' from one of the drives shutting down preceeded it.

The Hitachi deskstar was hot enough to boil a cuppa but the western digital was much cooler.

Solution? Buy another Hitachi and then have the ability to boil 2 cups of tea at the same time! ;P

Drives seem to get less and less reliable as rpm and data transfer speeds increase =/

just spit on it every now and then.
If you are leaving your pc on for long periods without using
it you can set the hd to shutdown after 1hr of no use.

No.
They try to get to the same temp, the thermal conductivity is just an indication of how fast they do it. If the copper on the HD is (say) 80, then the HD must be at least 80 as well, basicly the HD as the heat source MUST always be hotter than the copper.
The Aim is for the copper to loose the heat to the air quicker than the HD could, and hence cool them both down.

So This still means that if it feels as warm as your HDD did, then your HDD is the same temp as it was before you put the copper on it.

I've noticed that Maxtor drives are hot and noisy too. Never had any problems like this with Seagate.

The inference is correct, IF the copper is at the same temp, as the HD was before the copper was added, THEN the HD is as the same temp as before the copper was added.
Any problem you have with it, is with Perturbatio, who provided the study data ;)

As with any mechanical device, it's not a question of whether they'll fail, but when.

Luckily in most cases the functional life of a harddrive exceeds its economical life, so you'll upgrade to something bigger before the drive finally grinds to a halt.

These look like remarks to me, not questions. If you're deliberately attempting to disguise the true nature of your posts then it begins to look as if your dropping bait.

It is a remark, if the copper is as warm as the Hd was, Then the HD is still at the same temp.

There is nothing wrong with that statment. (Its not a question, its a remark. (A true remark as well)

Apologies H&K. I was wrong, you were correct. It was nothing to do with any other thread. Mainly confused with the way you worded it.

I have bad experience with Maxtor HDs. No joke, since yesterday i have one here to recover datas from it and this is the fourth hd (all Maxtor) that i got with this problem. They all had bad sectors on it and i believe it comes from the heat.

In the summer months they go so hot that you can boiling eggs on it.

My tip: Backup your most importend data so fast as you can and try to get any cooling unit for it.

(btw, sorry for my bad englisch...EPS)
