What makes a FP game?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/What makes a FP game?
Apart from the 'ARGH - Dead, gotta reload so I can get past just one more baddie' part, what else makes a FP game?
Andy
Exploding barrels
...and crates. Lots of crates.
FP = First Person?
well then a first person perspective makes a FP game.
oh yeah and when you reload with a gun half full, you strangely don't loose what's in the clip when you put a new clip in, it just "tops it up" hmmm....
well... half the excitement for me, as far as i can remember, in the first DOOM, was waiting to see what the next level would be like... the virtual environment... what new stuff the level maker had in store...
of course, the ability to send humiliating chat taunts were fun too...
**NICE SCREAM**
**OUCH, I FELT THAT OVER HERE**
**NOW THAT YOUR DEAD, FIX MY DINNER**
... ahhhhh the good ole days :)

What a FP game?
- tedium
- the feeling that no matter game you play, it feels as if your man is skiing along the floor instead of running.
lamo... what do ya expect playing such popular hits as Ski DOOM, NoArmsOrLegs DOOM, 1/4Life2, Ecumenical Prey...
get with it and stop shopping the bargain bins... get a real fps, will ya...
:)

FP=First Person
Ok, well, here's a challenge!
disregarding the shooting and reloading and exploding objects, What is it that keeps you playing?
Andy
Only one word sums it up 'atmosphere'
Remember Unreal?...hearing someone screaming and seeing the shadows fall under the partly ajar door...then the 'thing' runs off before you get the chance to see it properly.
Then exiting the ship to be immersed in beautiful landscape and music...such a WOW factor I have not experienced since in a FP game.
If I remember correctly - any game that has female characters always has a horde of people ("puki" raises paw) that want to mod them into naked females.
So, naked females it is - lots of them.
Here is a model available to purchase:
http://www.cubixstudio.com/
better make some naked guys for ENAY...
:)

Hey guys, could you please stop hijacking this thread and instead answer my questions?

The best part of any FPS is having a LAN based battle between you and a few mates. The best ones for me to date have been Quake II and Unreal Tournament.
So, going with those. Fast fluid levels of variety, each one you need to learn the best approach of speed and stealth for maximum kills. If each level has the same approach then you'll always find it suits one person game style the best. So a good variety is best. The graphics don't need to be jaw dropping.
Solid network code, last thing you want it to have a perfect head shot, only to see the opponent is still moving due to lag.
A perfect balance of weapons. If you've got uber weapon and they've got a pea shooter, they better be scared when they realise what you've got.
Over the top violence. If I drop a grenade on someones head, I want to see the effect of that, not just them lying on the floor in one piece. I'm not after a realistic blood fest gore visual, but if I blow someone up, I want them blown up.
Great sound effects. If I'm shooting off a mini-gun I want the sub woofer pounding with joy as this baby rips.
Taunts (Unreal Tournament). After I frag a mate in great style I want him taunted for dying at my hands. The more annoyed he gets the better. If my skills are better than his, I want it in neon lights.
Praise (Unreal Tournament). If I'm on a roll killing everyone off quickly I want the rest to hear I'm on a double kill, multi kill, ultra kill etc. It makes you feel good and scares the others that you are in the zone.
Thats it. For me FPS games are at their best when a group of mates have a LAN party. Quake II and Unreal Tournament are the best for that. Outside FPS then Red Alert (I & II), StarCraft and Warzone 2100 are my fave RTS's for a LAN party.
Single player FPS is another subject, but Halo (XBOX) and Area-51 (PS2) have been the best for me.
What keeps me playing is the fact I can't reach up or jump and pick up an item on a shelf or low wall, I have to find some convoluted duct to land on top of it - like I'm 3 again. Oh yeah and I can't squeeze through any gaps that a non-obese hero could easily squeeze through, or maybe just smash through.
Actually, I have played loads, maybe more than anyone on these forums, bold statement I know, but it's based on fact. Anyway, it's the exploring thing that gets me, what's round the next corner, keep on progressing. Also cleaning out levels, getting good at killing efficiently. Ammo conservation, another good/bad one (depending on your skill level). Linearness isn't so bad, run around kill, find keys, kill, take potion/health pack, find new gun, kill etc. It works for me.
there are several FP genres. The brute force shooter, The adventure type game, Mixes of them. Multiplayer modes. They all have a very diffrent plot.
Personally I like single player stuff like NOLF or Deus Ex, with a story that I personally like. It should have good graphics but I'm not after the most hardware-hungry releases. It should allow me to play a role as a superclever specialst behind the enemy lines etc., like Hitman (well hitman is boring after a few levels because there's no surprises in the story, every level the same). It should also contain some subcultural elements, philosophical and political aspects, even persiflages on realities.
Lobby-friendly themes bore me to death. Like "the american army" and other stuff sponsored by the MI-complex.
A FP game is any were the players view is concidered to be that which the players Avitar would see.
Sorry Grey, I was only guessing the word exists in english as well, does it? Occasionally I'll babelfish that one, promised :).
My fav two FPSs are Blood and Renegade... Blood for it's awesome atmosphere and Renegade for it's unique multiplayer.
I like the carnage aspect - something about taking someones
head off with a sniper rifle appeals to me + i find it very
relaxing..the more physicy it gets the better..bodies bouncing
about, breaking apart..forming hills of dead.. of course this
is secondary to atmosphere, but it adds that xtra level of
unrealness..fun, amusement - add multi-player support so
that you can slaughter your over trusting friends........
"we're supposed to be playing co-op you git!"
- heh..yeh, funny how that never quite works out ;)
Defoc8 - I like doing something similar in car racing games - race around the course backwards and cause big pileups...my favourite is still the old Indy500 game that ran on my XT over 15 years ago.

What keeps me playing an FPS is the replayability. 2 rounds are never the same, you could die 10 seconds in or you could survive to win the round.
For me, there needs to be powerful weapons that deliver satisfying kill sequences. You don't need to have pinpoint reactions where they grab their leg, arm, etc. This is evidenced by the still unrivaled awesomeness of turning a demon into red mist with the Doom II double barrel shotgun.
Correctly spacing out ammo and health helps to create the proper atmosphere. The feeling of being completely outnumbered helps too. I would take fighting 50 sprite enemies at once over Doom III which can barely manage to put 3 on the screen at once without bringing your PC to its knees.
For me (regarding multiplayer)... it is about balance and playability. I don't care about graphics... I don't care about sound.... I don't really care what the weapons are supposed to be... I enjoy the mechanics of the game. Games that are too new, or too old, have trouble dealing with speed issues, so people with the best PC normally win...
Today, Halo 1 is one of the perfect multiplayer games, because the game no longer just rewards the fastest PC... which is what it did a couple years age.... on the other hand, on of my favorite FPSs Red Faction, is no longer a good multi game...
Single Player FPSs I enjoy, I enjoy less for the "challenge" as most don't present any, and make the game more "difficult" by adding in more enemies..
I enjoy the adventure, seeing what is next, story... and graphics as it applies to the game world..
Someone else mentioned Unreal... and walking out of that ship was a WOW moment, because up until that point, it was exactly like the opening of quake 2.... You didn't expect such a goregeous vista... and the game kept hitting you with these great views and loveable natives... and ambient fauna... Not everything that moved was a threat... sometimes, things would be a threat, and others not.... but looked a lot a like...
Also, the bliss of the gameplay itself is important... Red Faction has wonderfully concieved fun weapons... The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay has fantasticly fluid gameplay, a great sense of existence, a really good plot (better than the movie) and was just a blast to play... let alone look at.
When I first played Soldier of Fortune I was gobsmacked by the ability to blast off limbs with the shotgun. My girlfriend actually found it too gross to watch.
that game was banned in australia...
LOL... in the Prey demo, i also found myself killing the poor people who i found cowering at the doors and portals...
'sorry brother'
hahahahaaaa...
hey, what can i say... sooorrrreeeee...
