3d tiles

Haven't done much tinkering with 3d, so a quick question.

I just want to mess around with some 3d 'tiles'. A bunch of landscape tiles, all the same size (X & Y size at least), that I could sort of 'stitch together' to make a full landscape.

Anyway, what's a good free 3d package I can use to make basic landscape tiles like this?

Personally I like AC3D - not free, but not expensive either.
