Copying old HardDisk to new HardDisk - how

I'm not utterly helpless here, but I've tried to do this before using software specifically designed for the job and it failed.
All the files were there, but it just stopped at some point during startup.
I'm reasonably sure that it was a path/root recongition thing ie. it wasn't seeing the new drive as C: at some point. I was very disappointed in the cloning software to say the least, but I suppose there could have been some box checked or unchecked.
I can't remember what I used before, but I'm looking for advice on
a) which program to use
b) tricky options to look out for - a one-click solution would be preferable ;)

I've mainly unsed Norton Ghost and found it the easiest.

1) Connect new hard drive (doesn't need formatting)
2) Boot Norton Ghost
3) Clone drive
4) Replace old drive with new one
5) Boot PC

Early versions of Ghost didn't support NTFS very well but that has not been the case for many years now.

I've heard good things about this one.

I've tried backing up my c drive while windows was running with no problem, not got round to testing restore yet.

Did I mention it's free ?

The backup drive should be seen as C: when you stick it on the primary IDE channel (not sure how this works with SATA).

Did it using a program called "TrueImage" in the end. Very quick and painless.

TrueImage is very good. Saved me a lot of time and grief.
Money well spent.
