Anyway, back to reminiscing.

And death to the 486-0rz.

His comments could be fair though - we exploited a L2 pipeline with the Pentium processors - he may have had an IBM chip which didn't handle floating point calculations as well as the Pentium.

If you played the Fifa games on Pentiums, they were slower than the IBM. A lot of people claimed the Fifa games were slow - coz, they had Pentiums.

In fact, he did have a Cyrix - question answered.

Reminds me of when I upgraded my 100mhz Pentium1 from 16mb to 32mb, as well as slap in my 4mb 3DFX Voodoo1 man and play games in all their OpenGL glory... ah those were the days.

I remember telling people that it was a must to have two 5 1/4 drives, so they could have Dos in one, and what they were working on in the other

I bought Quake when I just built a P133 with a PCI video card. It was awesome. Later on I got a Voodoo2 and GLQuake and couldn't believe it.

Quake? Duke? Bah! Who played Dark Forces? Now THAT was an amazing game.
I spent all of 6th grade playing through it again and again. I had memorized
every level texture and every bad-guy position! I was obsessed!

Actually, all of that LucasArts Archive volume III was great.

I miss that old 486. Programming in QBasic and playing those LucasArts games - it was heaven!

Yeah, a memory upgrade of 16mb now would only be able to hold as little as that dancing dog when you search for files in XP.

I hate that dog. I still miss the old search pane from
windows 98. Simple and powerful. None of this "Do you want
to search for pictures, documents or spreadsheets?"! This
doesn't help people.

Same goes to the option to "hide extensions of known file
types". <-- this is the single worst thing to happen to
home computing in the past decade. I can't count how many
times people have become lost and/or confused because they
couldn't tell what a file was or where anything went! It's
infuriating.

You know drew, I'd pay good money if LucasArts rereleased those volumes, but all of them on a single DVD....because I unfortunately missed out on all of them packages near the end of my glorious DOS years...(good ol' point & click adventures)...and regardin Dark Forces, yeah, good game, just that second-last level with that huge round maze-like puzzle room ticked me off, took me 45min to figure it out back then I believe.

Dark forces... ahh..
all I have to say is, Magneticly sealed rooms ROCK.

drew: Yeah I own Dark Forces. Played a coverdisk demo (back when I bought Mags) thought this is awesome and bought it. There was lots of graphical variation on the levels and it was really cool and interesting. I bought all the others too Jedi Knight (DFII) and so on...

drew & CS_TBL:
Open up XP file search in My Computer and go to Change Preferences, and then select the option Without an Animated Character.
Still in Change Preferences, Change files and folders search behavior, and select Advanced.
And voila, you have a search exactly like Windows 2000.

Ah good! tnx .. M$ shouldn't just assume everyone is stupid and requires a stupid-compatible(tm) interface.
At least they'd make it a generic choice somewhere, that changes every n00b-proof(tm) aspect to normal again.

except that find in files doesn't work with non .txt files unless you change the registry...

Wonder how many more copies of XP Pro would have sold if it *was* the way CS_TBL mentioned, and Home being for the PC-illiterate.

As long as there's a clean centralised set o' radiobuttons, like:

(o) I'm a n00b
( ) Cut the crap, I know the drill

then it's the best of both worlds. ^_^

As per usual, I run the classic windows theme rather than the default teletubbie-skin, I also have shortcut-icons in my taskbar which is not default. Eventually one can get there, but all these tweaks had better been placed in one customize window, rather than scattered everywhere around, carefully hidden I'd say.
