I was just reading another forum/article on a Dell notebook that went KA-BOOM at a Japanese conference of some sort. Makes me wonder if that was an act of terrorism, or if something really did make it do that by accident... However, yeesh... Just glad it wasn't MY notebook! Have a look at this article:

I recon he had hidden his lighter under the computer. And the heat has exploaded the lighter.
If you look at the second picture there is no "Major" damage to the comp itself, and the flames are in front of it. And the scorch marks are indicitive of combustion below the computer (Waayyyyy to much CSI veiwing)

Oh that's the Dell that runs on nitroglycerin, I saw that in the store the other day. They said it would extend battery life. Guess they were wrong.

I was about to say, that maybe he was using Blitz or coding a game, and the program literally backfired right in his face! Hehe... :D

I've heard of mobiles, mostly with non-standard batteries, exploding. And batteries can explode, so it's not an impossibility. Just hope Apple makes better quality laptops, as I'm typing this with my iBook on my lap. :P

The battery manufacturers like to call it venting, but it boils down to a mobile phone making a mess of your hand/face. Was more common in the bad 'ole days.

Great! I'm using a Dell Notebook also, but it was custom built so maybe I'm safe, for now.. If I don't post write a post for a couple months and end up missing, you guys know what happend :-(

The sad news is that was the unbacked-up development machine for Max3D. Expect a news article soon.

My own CSI-style investigation leads me to the following:-

Colour of smoke: Consistent with high-density electronics package suffering catastrophic failure. Likely caused by extreme excess current possibly result of local short-circuit.

Location of explosion: Underside of laptop. Could be a SODIMM module going up in flames or, depending on the laptop design, the CPU. I would guess the RAM though, because CPU's generally pop without that amount of smoke.

The only other thing I've seen go up like that before was an AT PSU set to 110V plugged into a 230V supply.

I've no sympathy whatsoever, it serves the guy right for trying to run Vista on a laptop.

It's plainly a firewall malfunction.

Considering that Apple are currently having lot's of problems with expanding batteries, they propably don't.

Hmm, bring out the marshmallows, Hershey's and Graham crackers, and maybe about another $1,500 to replace that notebook... :D

He had a copy of Win98 running, and it connected to Microsoft...

..uhmm..maybe if they just do shut down, fire will gone, ha?
