Who downloaded and played Prey's Demo?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Who downloaded and played Prey's Demo?

Well, today's the day... Prey Demo released by 3D Realms at Midnight EDT. Did anyone download it and play it yet? I have to say, if an FPS was done like this in Blitz3D at all, I'm telling ya, I'd love to know where technology like this would ever be found in B3D to build FPSs like this...

downloading it now... and what a pleasant surprise, a direct download from the site, a really fast download (surprised, naybe not too many people getting it at this time)...

i'm really interested to see what this is all about... probably won't be able to look at it 'till later today though...

What a pleasant surprise, a direct download from the site
My god! 3dRealms still has some degree of sanity and isn't willing to kill their professional image by dumping their stuff on ad-infested file sites?
I'm downloading this for that reason alone.

Speaking of which... I've observed that Sourceforge does better than all these professional game developers at serving downloads :)

Edit:
Looks like the direct download link has been hidden away now that the game has been mirrored so many times. Thankfully, they have download.com which is just about the only one I can stand.

I am not going to download it - graphically, I think it sucks.

The screenshots i've seen looked quite good.

I really liked the demo!

Seems to be much better than quakeIV and doom3.

Servers:
http://www.gamershell.com/download_14372.shtml

P.S.: If you play mp make sure you set your connection to DSL/CABLE. Default is T1/LAN which causes mega lag!

Currently downloading, getting a constant 100kb/s from GamersHell (god bless their souls, need more DL sites like them that dont require registration for public servers), cant wait to play it.....read alot about it since it was mentioned.

The recent previews also brought my hopes up that the game will be good, it appears to be yer average FPS, but it has alot of little cool quirks/clever game-moments that make it look better then the usual pack. For instance, (I believe this is in the demo as well), there's a part where you're in this room, you can see this little planet looking thing in a display case, to your left there's a portal, so you head in, and apparently that portal put you right inside that display case onto the little planet, so it screws around with proportions as well, and from there you can see the monsters come into the room (looking huge & menacing) walk around and look at your tiny self inside, then they run through the portal to come kick your ass on the wee thing.

42% downloaded, got a good 30min left still. ;/

[EDIT] Done downloadin, and just my luck, bad CRC on the actual installation file. /sigh. As if I already didn't have that happen on the FEAR demo awhile back which was a whole 650mb's worth of downloading.

Well, at least I still got 6gb of bandwidth to blow before my monthly counter resets in 6 days, time to download it again.....using a FlashGet this time so the stinkin file wont break somewhere along the way, going to try FileFront this time around since that's the only site I know of for these kinda things that even allow use of Download Managers.

Downloaded and gave it a whirl last night - a lot of fun, with an interesting (and rather grisly) story and some engaging characters.

(and a fair amount of bad language - it should be popular ;-)

I love this game. some cool bits on it such as weird gravity (I know it's been done before), awesome set pieces (like the getting abducted ride) and cool portals.... all in all should be popular like madjack says.

Ok....that's twice now I've downloaded, and both times there's been a CRC error.......

Trying one more time then I'm calling it quits.

[EDIT] *sigh*, there goes 1.2gb of bandwidth wasted on corrupted downloads.

[EDIT2] Going to try yet again but on another system, I doubt my net connection can screw up 3 times in a row....possibly something wrong with the the HD portions it's downloadin the file onto.

Okay, upon playing 10 minutes of the demo I have to come back...

This is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting action games I have played in a while.

I am once again reminded that my hardware is not lame; everyone lse's graphics engine is lame. This is also one of the few good looking games that is actually properly optimized :)
Both HalfLife 2 (with HDR in Ep1) and this run at acceptable frame rates with high graphics quality and native screen resolution.

It drew me in very quickly with a nice demo of the interface (yay! interactive control panels like Doom3, demonstrated with working arcade games!) and some attractive interactive lighting.

So far I haven't noticed much painful loading, and the portals are excellent effects. They're actually one of the few game elements that I've actually thought "what the heck!?" and had to go back and study them for a good reason :)
To really see how well they work, you have to see them for yourself... what is so cool about them is that they're very natural (and realistic) looking. Just a completely clean opening to another location. (Really obvious, but rarely done).

On a minor note - it also plays in stereo3d (i.e. 'true' 3d) - which Doom3d refused to do. I have to disable shaders/shadows/aaa and go to 800x600 (but keep bumpmapping else it looks crap) and it slows down in complex areas, but it works.

One other thought - I really like the way they've written the start of the game. It establishes your character very quickly in letting you know who you are, what you look like, where you are, your personality and your main motivation. None of this long winded guff other games hit you with.

:( I've got myself stuck in one of those strange organic hallways and there's an opening above me that I can't get through.
Talon seems to want me to enter, though...
I guess I'll try that another time.

Still a neat game, though.
They've thrown in some pretty interesting little puzzles!

There's glowing panels you can shoot to alter the direction of gravity (if you're in the section I'm thinking off).

One word: vertigo

*vomit*

Still loved singleplayer though...

Yeah, just waiting on the X360 demo to appear (knowing Peter Moore, he may just order Human Head Studios to turn Prey into a Halo clone (don't think we'd want that)). IMHO, I can't wait for mid-July. I have both the LCE version for PC, and standard edition for X360 on preorder. Just couldn't decide which platform would be better, so I just mixed and matched the versions for each platform...

Ah, I figured out why I was stuck.
I went backwards :)

I got too used to games like HalfLife, where the path behind you is almost inevitably closed off so you know that you're going the right way.

Of course, my mistake was entirely pathfinding, and it was pretty dumb of me...

Those glowing panels that you can shoot to change the gravity are brilliant...
That and the miniature planet thing with its very own center of gravity are completely bizarre!
I would love to see what goes behind the level design in this game. It would probably be more nausiating than the levels themselves :P

It would sort of make sense if these weren't all loaded seemlessly, but they are :(

Upon finishing, I have one final thought:
Could this perhaps be the first fps where it is possible to directly shoot oneself in the head?
I felt a bit like one of those dogs that barks at its own reflection when it happened, and I just had to do it again and again and again until I realized that I was killing myself.

From the language of the game, you feel like playing duke nukem which is so cool.

Multiplayer is real fun and something different with all that gravity stuff in there. Only Cos: 8 Players in MP seem max?

Tried the demo, liked it, will buy it the 10th of july.
Now this is finally the fresh air the FPS genre needed. Feels like Duke Nukem 3D which is a huge plus, and I actually felt BAD when I turned on the human killing machine by accident :D

Hehe, I stand there like 5 mins watching people getting killed... ;)

I hope they have another bar in the game later on.
Loved the music box! Now add some chicks and its perfect... :)

so it's good then?

> Who downloaded and played Prey's Demo?

I haven't.

I haven't. Not sure if it was said, AFAIK Prey is built ontop of the doom 3 engine, can you confirm this?

Yeah, slightly modified Doom 3 engine (modified to the point where ceilings become floors, and vice versa). It just takes the Doom 3 engine to its limits, and pushes the envelope... Human Head worked wonders on that game, 3DR did a great job on the QA, and we have yet to hear from the XBL team for the Marketplace Demo... It was far worth the d/l, regardless of what internet speed you have. NOW BRING ON DUKE NUKEM FOREVER!!!

Note to self : Never play anything on this "last resort" PC ever again.

6 FPS average with 640x480 and everything off!
(never really could figure out what the problem/bottleneck was with this PC, a GF FX5200 shouldn't perform THAT badly)

Looks pretty damn good, got as far as the little planet portion, but stopped there was the FPS dropped to 3, and I really dont like killing monsters when I'm playing a game of "guess how much the camera moves with my mouse movement inbetween frames".

Just downloaded and played the demo. It was full of nice touches. I live dieing but not... They found a really good way to get around that problem. Graphics are top notch and gameplay was actually... FUN. I may just part with the cash for this one.

i'm running it now (been quite busy the past few days... first chance i've had to sit down and play anything)... and so far, i haven't gotten past the title screen... the music is so great, i had to stop and listen to it in its entirety... just like a score from a cinematic release...

ok... lets start a new game...

Another quality game with a 3D Realms/2K label on it... Even tho Human Head developed it, they certainly do bring something unlike I've ever played... John Carmack's just sweating in jealousy, I can see it right now.

great so far... the default settings seemed to work ok (GeForce6100 mid range puter), but i shot the res down to 8x6 for fluid smoothness...

interesting playing with the interactive elements... switching the lights on and off, running water int he sinks... and the water going down as you flush the toilet in the stall... really well done...

ok, i'm currently in the bar... winning a bundle at the blackjack slots...

i keep saying to myself though... this is is the kind of visuals we should be able to do in Blitz3D... this is the kind of game we should be able to be pumping out with Blitz today...

another thing... i like the ethnic slant... viewing the world first person from a native american perspective... let's see how they develop this...

ok, continuing the game...

HOLY CRAP!!!! OH MY GOD!!! HAALLLPPPP!!!!

the fools... they let me get a gun... of some sorts :)

ok, this is good so far... startin' to feel a lil like Quake4, but a lil different... i figured out the how to get around in this glop ship... remember the movie about the guy who gets taken aboard a ufo, then returns a few days later only to relive the experience in his mind... fire in the sky i think it was called... this ship reminds me of the one in that movie...

i just got killed... while trying to remove one of those green lil spidery thingees... gonna have to come back to this one later... big fun so far...

John Carmack's just sweating in jealousy, I can see it right now.
I'd of thought he'd be *far* too busy playing with his rockets to have even noticed. ;o)

The demo was a wizard wheeze...Lots'a nice touches...Me likey. :o)

This is very cool. I enjoyed Sin Episodes #1 and was thoroughly disappointed with Half Life Episodes #1, but this is a real breath of fresh air. Also good to see someone has finally made something which makes the Doom 3 engine look good. The portals are really cool, much better than I imagined they would be, and I love the enemies appearing out of them. Good use of the "puzzles" ( simple, yes, but a little variety ) and the whole gravity thing is really cool too. Quite a big demo too. Very impressed. I'll be getting this.

Yep, this is really cool. Might buy this one.

Tim Gerritson: It's a fairly large demo. Not necessarily in terms of size, since it clocks in at about what most demos do these days, but in terms of how much content. We've shipped with two multiplayer maps and the first five levels of the game. You get to see a fair bit of the game in action to get a feel for it.
(interview on Prey)

Oh, wow, most demos only have 1 multiplayer map or 20 mins of singleplayer. I'm downloading this...

Yep, got both versions of the game on preorder, the LCE for the PC, and the standard edition for the X360. That'll do, for now...

Really liking the multiplayer here, all the gameplay twists the single-player offers are in fullblast there, love shooting unaware people through portals, or sit by in a corridor where the gravity is in my favour, as I snipe down the guys who appear to be running up the walls from my perspective....it's awesome, just runs a bit choppy though for some reason on my system (which I just got back today), when single-player ran flawlessly.

Only thing that really takes away from the game are the loading screens, I guess I'm the only one who prefers HL2-style loading screens that simple have text over the last-drawn game render saying "Loading".

Another pet-peeve I found is that your torch wont affect the lighting in the area the portal is leading to, until you actually pass through the portal to the point where you're actually in the area it leads too.....and it's irritating....guess not even a great game (demo) goes without mean finding a way to be a critic about it.

But anyway, yeah, great demo overall, I was surprised how much they managed to put in this, especially considering the file-size (450mb), most demo's I see these days are 650mb+ and only offer petty gameplay time as Regular K stated.

Regardin the collector's edition....
Those in the US who buy it on PC will also get the game on DVD instead of CD-ROM.

Damn, I'm getting me that edition just for that, I really hate multiple disc-swapping sessions during game installation.
(UT2K4 & FarCry really pushed it for me with regards to that....)

With regards to 3DRealms & TakeTwo's little offer for Duke Nukem Forever, I hope it means that we will actually see the Dukester finally come out this upcoming November......not to mention hope it'll kick freaking ass.

Yeah, I really think that technology of that "gravity track" can really come in handy in other genres and/or games as well. IMHO, I see a nice drag racing game being designed on that type of principle of having you race as such a speed, that you can climb up walls and ride on ceilings (just as long as you kept your speed up). Of course, these gravity tracks are nothing exactly new, but at least they should be taken more advantage of in more games...

Not exactly a drag-racing game, but in TrackMania Sunrise, that's possible with the curved tileset pieces, some people go crazy with their home-made tracks, having you go at insane speeds just to have you ride along the ceiling of a tubed area until you curve back around to the other side once all obstacles have passed.
(now if only the game didn't employ StarForce Protection, /sigh)

Still, regardless, it's nice to actually have something to look forward to playing through this summer (Prey, that is), as the summer is usually a drab season for games for some reason.
(probably because companies are saving their games for the upcoming X-Mas season?)

Uhh, try being able to have this game by Bastille Day for overseas customers, or one week after the 4th of July for me...
