... Guess The Engine Thread!!!
*** applause, cheers, more applause ***

which game engine were these shots made from...
a half a bottle of beer to the winner... (must be above 18 or whatever age mandated by your locality)
:)

Groan (Steve slaps forehead in disbelief).
Come on Red, finish the thing in Blitz first - then go looking for snazzy engines for the sequel. ;-)
no... no... that's not it Steve...
i've got Blitz3D code open on the other machine right now... working on the sub sim as we speak...
i was just taking a short break, and ran across this item of interest...
c'mon now... join in on the fun... which engine?

Yeah right! ;-)
Ah, now this appears to be the 'Johnson Dumbleweed Xpo Engine' - version 2.1e if I am not mistaken.
Unreal enginge?
Eliza?
DADAAAA!!!!! Jams gets the half bottle of beer...
for you BlitzMax coders, take a good look at Eliza... it's come quite a ways, and may be one of the better choices for an interim 'max solution...
plus, Thiery Mike is a frequent browser and member of the forums here...

I wouldn't call this "guess-the-engine" - it's more like "guess-which-engine-the-artwork-I'm-showing-you-is-in".
IMHO, an engine should be viewed by it's features, not the artwork included in it's examples.
What I mean is, a true "guess-the-engine" thread would give you this information to guess the engine:
* DirectX 7 + Direct 9 + OpenGL Support
* Powerful particle engine and particle scripts
* Powerful material script system
* Supports PNG, JPEG, TGA, BMP or DDS files, including 1D textures, volumetric textures, cubemaps and compressed textures (DXT/S3TC)
* Dynamic LOD and polygon reduction tools
* Static geometry batching
* Advanced animation system including:
Blending of multiple simultaneous animations
Hardware accelerated animation support
Multiple interpolation modes (linear, spline, etc.)
Mesh morphing support (good for facial animations)
* LOD Terrain rendering
* BSP and Octree optimizations
* Billboard sprites
* Ribbon trails
* Automatic alpha-sorting of transparent meshes
* Media manager supporting the access of files within ZIP or PK3 archives
... and much more.
well, you're right JJ.. but seeing as this *IS* a Blitz forum... i don't want to push my welcome tooooo far by actually promoting other game engines here...
if you wanna get some indepth info about the engines i show screenies from, just go and visit the sites...
in the meantime, this is meant just as a lil fun diversion...

Truevision 6.5?
DADAAAA!!!!! Jams gets the half bottle of beer...
Hooray! The thing is i don't drink.... can i choose the next guess the game engine screenshot instead?
Oh popped in too late...beside of that i would have had no clue, i've enjoyed it again! :O)
BlitzMax 3D engine?!? ;)
LOL
Ahh, that's the triple full stop engine.
These threads should instead show glitches in the engine.
That way it's both encouraging and less of a guessing game :)
but seeing as this *IS* a Blitz forum... i don't want to push my welcome tooooo far by actually promoting other game engines here...
Isn't that what you are already doing??
Jams: No, it's not TrueVision.
I'll give you a hint about the engine: It's free.
Isn't that what you are already doing??
NOOOOOoooooo....
i'm still here... so i guess that means that all is well... and you are wrong...
so there... nahhhhh nahhhhhhh...
now stop trying to spoil a lil bit of innocent fun...
besides, the admins don't seem to be afraid of a lil mention of the competition... just for comparison sake, what's the harm... what is there to be afraid of, Blitz can stand strong on it's own merits...
and finally, the engine is made by a licensee of Blitz products, and he has written a wrapper to his engine for BMax...
so again... where's the problem...

I like these little threads but it's getting to the point where most engines look the same anyway.
the biggest difference in a pretty engine these days is the quality of the art pipeline. You can create good graphics in any engine, but somewhere along the line you have to measure the time cost and trouble of using that engine. And thats just the art side of things.
Also have to bear in mind that a screenshot is just a still image, what is the performance like on your average PC?
Take the rather nice looking Project Offset with its semi transucent ray scattering shaders on the skin. It looks fantastic, but not only do they have a great art pipeline. They also have dual top of the range 7900's in their test machines.
Most of us are still pandering to a low end of a GF4 MX that doesn't even do pixel shaders. And a recommended system at least a couple of years old.
