ddos attacks

About DDoS problem:

If your website is attacked by lets say 1000 PC zombies, what can you do?

Currently we have one site hosted at ev1servers.net and they do not block single IPs when there are so many attacking. They just turned on the firewall that blocks anyone from accessing the site and plan to do so untill the attacks stop.

What can a man do in this situation, are there any good hosting solutions that provide better DDoS protection?

surely raising a firewall and blocking all access is exactly the same effect as the initiator of the DDoS attack wants?

yes, but is't there any better solution today? I mean it's damn 2006 and internet sites can still be crippeled by these attacks?

What are the options, to let these bots consume all the trafic quota, so guys at ev1 decide to bring up the damn fireall for a day to see if it will stop. That can't be the only solution there is. What if the attack continues on for weeks or months?

Yes. Two. a) out-bandwidth the attacker (aka. the Microsoft solution) b) get your ISP to drop such packets at the router (that's what it's there for).

There was also a little pocket game called HACKNET (or something) which had cheesy graphics but a click interface... Very windows 98! Looking for it...

Isn't there a way on XP servers that will count accesses of all connections and automaticly refuse to serve IP's that are acting like dosers?

At least that's what my provider told me. Don't know the name tho.

they have blocked some of IPs, but it was still heavy on the site, thankfully now, attack has stopped...
