I can only hear it if the volume is up high.

If you cannot hear the tone chances are you're old (40+) and showing signs of Presbycusis (aging ear)

Seems kids are taking advantage of this and using ringtones with high-pitched tones to prevent the adults from knowing when they are receiving calls and messages.

I can hear both tones clearly at normal volume.

For those who don't get the thread title, its rhyming slang for 'deaf'. I.e. Sorry I didn't hear you speaking to me... I think I must be going a bit Mutt...

Anyway, yeah I can hear it, it's agonizing.

a $200 dog whistle... more foolishness for the new milenium... all the teachers need to do is to keep a puppy in the room, and make the kids clean up after the dog... that'll put a quick end to this nonesense...

It appears to be a simple sin wave at 13.77KHz, i doubt the frequency response on most mobile phones goes that high <prove me wrong> :)

I can *just* hear it with the volume up. Well I'm not sure 'hear' is the right word. I'm aware of it and I can tell the difference when it stops.

Well, I could hear it easily, even through the mono speaker on my monitor, with volume pretty low. Painful.

It's quite interesting that there's an age barrier. If the youngsters learned Morse Code they could use it to communicate.

I was actually surprised I could hear it as I'm 38. :P

This reminds me of an anti-yob/chav device I saw on the news. It's placed in areas where such types hang out, and constantly emits a high frequency noise that young people (below 20, or something) can hear and find painful, but older people can't hear at all. Cool! :P

At our local bus station they play 'uncool' music like Bing Crosby to discourage the kids from hanging around.

all it proves is that you have a decent set of speakers, and a good sound card :)

at least i hope that's all... i couldn't hear a thing... not a beep, a peep, or a squeak...

Read my post Red. I have anything but a good set of speakers (mine conked out a couple of months back and I can't afford to replace them). My sound card isn't up to much, either.

TBH, I think this has little to do with age, and more to do with genes. I've always looked younger than my true age (despite having smoked since about the age of 13), which used to bug me as a youngster, but now I'm actually thankful for. :P

If as Jams says the sound is 13.77KHz then this is well within normal hearing. Humans can hear up to 20KHz insome cases, but certainly up to 16KHz. However, lot's of 90's ravers have ipared hearing from clubs and sticking their heads in the bass bin.

I just tried that on my mom, she didnt hear anything. I could hear it and my 10(?) yr old sister. Ha, this is fun.

I hear nothing until I jack the volume up relatively high.
Then the noise becomes apparent.

There are two tones playing simultaneously - a lower one, and a much higher one which begins momentarily before the lower tone does.

I take it you can only hear one of them. That's probably a 'fail'.

oh, if that's all you mean, yeah I can hear that. The "lower" toww sounds more staticly for some reason. Maybe it's not really lower but some kind of reverb/attenuation on the tone or something.

lol. No. That's just my sick sense of humour. Do you really think I'd be a smoker if I used an iron lung? :P Then again, if I carry on smoking, I may need one in the near future. :/

Not everyone keeps their phone strategically placed in trouser pocket ;)
I avoid putting my phone on vibrate as it always scares the crap out of me when it goes off - especially when driving !
I wouldn't even attempt to try and hear the high pitched sound - I know I'm slightly deaf already. Too much playing the guitar with the amp cranked up full !
