First... lemme apologize for loading up this part of the forum with this large screenshot...

first impression... is this an image of a real car, or is it one of a computer generated model?
second impression, and question... regardless of whether or not it is real or computer generated... do you think something like this can be used in a real game, a blitz game for example, without killing the performance of the app...
--Mike
3d render id say, the shadowing under the car looks darker than i'd expect judging from the background.
First Impression:
Computer generated, and very obvious. The car just screams that it is out of place of the background (look at the edges of body, some of the lush enviroment should be reflected off of something that polished). Shadows are too dark under the car. on even a bright day, you can still see under a car (the pavement), regardless of how dark it is down there.
Perhaps if they used some HDR lighting, it would look a bit more realistic as well.
Second Impression:
Depends on on the custruction of the model I guess. Judging just by this image, there are a lot of metalic areas on the car (refractions) that just wouldnt look right if you weren't at least rendering 1 cube map every 20 frames min. It looks high poly.
is that a Max3D render of an AC-Cobra? ;) heehee
Definitely a render, the lighting is all kinds of wrong.
Could be used in a game? Yes.
A Blitz game? Not unless you mean with one of the more powerful third party engines, no.
Without killing performance? Well, depends on the machine specs. To have a game with cars of that quality, you're going to be talking a lot of polys being rendered and a pretty heavy duty shader to get those kinda paint, reflection and lighting effects, so you might get decent performance if you set the minimum specs up ( insanely? ) high.
well, most of you have guessed that it is indeed not a pic of a real car... the credits are here -->
http://www.creative-3d.net/GalleryDisplay.cfm?ID=16570 along with some other fine examples of modelling... so real that i was stunned that they weren't indeed the real thing...
as far as using something like this in a game... i'd love to be able to play one with a car like this rendered in it in real time... not ever even coming close to doing something like this, i'm gonna have to hear what the guys who model stuff like this have to say...
sure would be nice though...

I've seen a few realtime demos of *similar* quality. There was one on the ATI site.
Yeah, here ya go.. 28MB download :
http://www2.ati.com/misc/demos/ATI-9700-CarPaint-Demo-v1.1.exe
The tire rims gave way to the fact it was a render easily for me, as well as the upper edge of the windshield, which isn't smooth.
Not to mention the background itself isn't in the same focus as the car...
It's a 3D render as you can tell by a) the poor antialiasing, b) the mismatch of contrast between the car and the backdrop, c) the rendering is too perfect compared to the grainy blurry hazy photo backdrop so it stands out unnaturally.
Definate render, the lighting is wrong and the car is perfectly clean ;)
Use it in a game? Sure, why not? Use it in a Blitz3D game... errr... I'll get back to you on that ;)
Seriously though, there's no reason why medium to high-end gear couldn't handle a complex model like that in realtime. Project Gotham 3 manages to render 8 cars which have about 4 times less detail than that one appears to have, plus really detailed environments.
A 6600GT with an AMD 64 3200+ would handle that with no problems at 30fps. I reckon ;)
Havn't read this thread, but to answer the first question : the entire picture is computer generated. Photorealistic textures most likely, but if you look at the left edge of the door, more specifically the exact area above that at the very top of the picture, you can clearly see some texture tearing in the trees.
Second thread : not a hope in hell. Not Blitz3D, sheesh. Not in a real game on current tech. Maybe PS3 gen or next gen tech.
Definately a render.
The proof: you'd have to be a complete idiot to park your Cobra in the middle of the road, right after a blind corner!!! :P
render. Many things give it away, but the "hexagonal" windscreen gave it away unless that's suppsoed to be a design feature...
There are much better examples of car rendering than that... check out
this,
this,
this, and
this.
Those all look quite artificial though. I'm sure I've seen some more convincing stuff a few years back. Something to do with 'radiosity' I'll see if I can dig them up...
Here's one I was thinking of:
Cor, nice. The garage isn't very good though, IMO.
[edit]...and the shadow's a bit naff, too.
P.S. I'm going to look a complete idiot if you tell me this is, in fact, a photograph. :P
>There are much better examples of car rendering than
>that... check out this, this, this, and this.
Is it just me, or is the silver porsches windscreen about 25 percent to big?
Andy
It's a concept car, Andy. I'm not overly impressed by any of those renders though, TBH.
Another big givaway regarding that Cobra pic is that the car is scaled about 50-75% larger than the surroundings. Look at the divided road not too far behind it. That thing's bigger than a Hummer. :)
Check these 3D models... some VERY nice 3D renders and models:
http://www.3d02.com/Like this... pretty decent:

O_O
Wow!
well they are of course better than I could do, but there are still non-circular areas and dodgy looking alloys.
no... no... NOOOO NOOOOO NOOOOOOO...
that last one has gotta be real...
:)
--Mike
No real cars are that clean... there's not a single spec of dust on that! Looks good though :)
The wheels give it away, as usual... license plate is a bit suspect, too.
Still, it looks amazing!
But who needs nearly photorealistic cars when you can already do photorealistic titanium toffee trees?

Hmm?
Also the fuel flap is not round.
I like the car on the modo site
http://www.luxology.com/whatismodo/ it's one of those evil ones... :O)
By the way, also done with modo...
That one is pretty well composed, and the tires don't look overdone.
Anything that may give it away as fake is fairly well concealed :)
Windows are a bit dark, though. (Laziness?)
One problem: It appears to have 2 light sources and suffers from ridiculously dark shadows... again.
Here's another good one:

Rendered with Yafray
pretty rad! I can see that car designers should be able to convince execs with renders of this quality but I guess this technology is actually consumer level!
ok... here's a pretty good looking model running around in 3Impact...

there's a lil demo avaialble, though i don't think this particular one was done with one of the 'BMax wrappers... check out the page...
http://www.3impact.com/3Impact_Engine/yabbse/index.php?topic=1752.0btw... i luv those Coopers... fun car :)
