Games you wish you'd thought of...
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Games you wish you'd thought of...
So, what game/s that you've played over the years have most made you think, "Damn. I wish I'd come up with this idea!". I'm talking simply about the enjoyment of playing the game here, not how well known or financially successful it is/was.
One that springs to mind with me is the original Bomber Man. It's such a blast (literally!) to play, especially in multi player mode, yet is a very simple concept. I remember when I first started playing it, I metaphorically slapped my forehead and said "D'oh! Why didn't I think of this?!". It seemed like such an obvious idea for a game.
Or, maybe you've come up with an original game idea yourself, that you're particularly proud of?
It would have to be the first Dungeon Keeper.
Basically, in my opinion, it managed to take alot of what would seem to be gimmicky things and put them together in a quite wonderful game.
Honestly, I could sit here for hours and write down everything about it that I loved, but the overall execution was brilliant.
Viewtiful Joe.
I don't think I've ever wished I had come up with a game as i would have just ruined it and it would never have been finished :P
But I guess the Pokemon games - I don't think anything has had that sort of lastability with me.
DOOM
Medal Of Honor
MS Flight Sim
Silent Hunter

Most of Nintendos games lol !
IPete2.
Snood - not for the content, for the money!!
I don't think I've ever played a game and wished I'd come up with it. I generally play games and think how I could make them better. Although whether or not I actually have the ability to put my ideas that would make them better into action is extremely debatable.

Naughty. I said financial success isn't allowed as a reason. Try again. :P
Anyway, that Snood game just looks like a run of the mill Bust a Move variant. Why's it so successful, and how much has it made?
Oh, maybe Duke Nukem 3D (even tho it rocks as it is), or maybe World of WarCraft (at least I wouldn't charge all those ludicrous fees (if Blizzard wants to charge, then tag team with XBL (if Blizzard even has plans for an X360 version), not on the PC))... IMHO, the best game that I've loved either on a console OR PC is... F.E.A.R. By far the best FPS to date, and probably going to be the most difficult to take after. Maybe FPS games aren't my cup of tea, but I play them a lot.
Grr... Now I'm out of ideas again, thank a lot!
Quest for Glory.
The first Tomb Raider!!!

For simplicity and playability ...
* Cannon Fodder
* Sensi Soccer
* Micro Machines
Slighly OT ... the ps2 2006 Sensi Soccer incarnation is a blatant world cup cash in, bug ridden to hell and shocking to play. John Hare should be ashamed of himself!!! I'm considering a proper remake for my next project :)
Stevie
STUNTS, or well, it's spiritual successor Trackmania...
Played Stunts for hours on end, the biggest draw being able to create your own tracks for a pre-set list of tiles..., but there were no other racers at the time I can recall that had corkscrews & loop-de-loops in them, especially when you can have them back-2-back-2-back on a track...
Was fun as hell back in the days.
Nice thread.
Lemmings for me. Good franchise.

I was really tempted to buy that, but then my cynical genes kicked in and I thought, hey, I bet it's complete rubbish and an insult to the Sensible Soccer name. Sorry to hear that my cynical gene was right though.
Kinda rings a bell that someone already made a Blitz version quite recently though. I think it's someone who doesn't hang around the community much though, and I can't find it at the moment.
Elite or JetPac
Ludo
Dungeon Master. I bought A500 and 1/2MB expansion just to play this.
@Kenshin, That Why I bought extra memory as well ;)
(Stupid ST and its 512K version)
Pacman
@H&K : When I first saw it I was totally blown away. Spent weeks locked in my room playing it. Still consider this and the expansion (Chaos Strikes Back) to be my favourite games ever.
Eye of the beyholder, was a lot lot better. (Which was to be expected I supose). But Dungeon Master was a total "social Life" killer. (And your right, it took ages to finish, not like nowadays ;(

You are indeed a wise man!!!
Ludo
Heeeehaaaaaave!
Orbz

I'm with Kenshin. FTL's Dungeon Master was the reason I bought my first Amiga. I loved that game. A buddy of mine and I actually mapped it out as if we were really role playing.
Yup, I guess I'm a geek, but it sure was fun. Good friend, beer, pizza and Dungeon Master. It was fun, still makes me smile just thinking about it. Was the first game that really immersed me.

Dunno about you, but Wolf 3D would've been a little better than it was to a point that, for those times, it would play more like an RPG as well as an FPS. Even tho this game was supposed to take on the original Silas Warner classic, I still feel that there should've been some RPG elements (even tho technology may or may not have been that great). Of course, these days, RtCW takes that on with some NPC elements once in a while. Too many WWII-based games on the market anymore. That's something that will get boring after a while, IMHO.
^^^^^ Time to bring out an old favorite ...

thud thud, moan.
yeah I mapped the whole thing on squared paper. Really enjoyed this:

Tetris - I could knock a decent version out in a week and make a lot of money out of it if that Pesky Russian hadn't pre-empted me by 20 years.
.... Flood, Dungeon Master, C&C, Mad Doctor, Timetunnel...
Yeah, I was going to mention Tetris, too - not that I like the game that much. It just seems like such an obvious idea. Oh, and Pac-Man - the daddy of ALL video games, as far as I'm concerned. :)
MegaLoMania - absolutely ace yet could've been written in AMOS given the technical demands.
The Legend of Zelda
Maybe Parsec/Defender... I could've made it a military fighter in the Middle East instead of a space/planet shooter...
