Old threads

I've noticed in some posts people comment on something that they have a point of view on.... then post again shortly afterwards simply stating 'ohhh... it's an old thread...'

How old constitutes an 'old thread' and why is it such an issue anyway ? Surely if someone has a point of view that they feel like airing then they shouldn't have to create a new thread just because a threads went by it's sell by date... ?

Depends on who says, it's an old thread. It upsets some people quite alot, probably reduces them to tears. Doesn't bother other people ;o)

Depends on whether or not the person who bumps the post has anything worth saying to me. If you bump a year old post just to make a flippant remark or to offer "help" to someone who got the answer they needed a year ago, then that's pretty daft.

If they've got something worth saying, or a follow-up question which warrants bringing all the existing information to attention then I think it's good, and even preferable to starting a new thread. If it's just to say "narf!" then I think it's rude to people who have posted recent threads and are waiting patiently for an answer when they have their thread pushed down out of site by someone with too much time on their hands.

I agree, I posted a solution to a problem that I had, on a thread that I had searched while looking for the solution. And was told that I was wrong to do so just because the thread was an old one.

@ H&K sorry to hear someone had the 'nerve' to chastise you.... C'est La Vie.. This at least clears up the degree of 'botheredness' about the old threads blah.

posting a solution to an "old" thread is rather a good idea, it gives your solution context and allows other attempted sugestions to be evaluated in comparison to your solution

Nothing wrong with what you did IMO

When it answers an otherwise unanswered question it can be quite useful for future searches.

It's the ones that resurrect a 1 year old thread to say "cool" that are the annoying ones.
