If I buy a top GFX card..?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/If I buy a top GFX card..?
Say like the ATI x1900 xtx or the Nvidia 7950GX will they support DX10 when it comes out?
I was speaking to my brother and he told me that nows not the time to be buying a new PC because of major changes and new hardware due to be released when Vista goes on sale. He told me to wait until Febuary next year then buy a DX10 GFX card and new DDR3 ram that's supposed to be coming out. Then there's crossfire motherboards from Asus which is basically nvidias sli technique.
What do you lot reckon?
Is there ever a good time?

Lol! I don't think there is actually. :)
I guess it depends on when you plan on upgrading to Vista. If it's as soon as it comes out, then you might want to wait.
No, they wont be dx10 compatible. DX10 required that they have occlusion and instancing support, and 1 pass environment mapping.
I too am going to purchase a new computer especially for Vista. I was going to wait until after Christmas - ideally, at least 3 months after Vista Larges - just in case of any bugs that Microsoft miss. I too will want a very hard card and other exciting stuff.
I wouldn't wait. You'll be lucky if there's any 3D games out for Vista in a year, maybe two.
Right, XBox 360's all around then.
I might just use the money to buy sausages.

Not natively... You may be able to find an updated driver that can emulate some of the new features, but unless the card was specifically designed with that version of DirectX in mind, its going to be a ton slower than a 'real' DX10 card.
Well, I've been to the Guru3D forums and had a chat with a few fellas there. All reccomendations were for me to wait until Vista hits.
I guess I'll just wait. Next years only 7 months away.

What makes you think Vista will be out by then?

Well... The fact that its a couple of years overdue now doesn't exactly inspire confidence... It's been pushed back several times now, pretty much everything 'new' (other than the 'pretty pictures' have been removed, and Symantec is taking MS to court to try to prevent them from releasing it in its current form... Sure, they might release it by then, but if will be a shadow of its initially announced self regardless.
Vista is promised in January, internally the talk is that it will be pushed back 3 months past that.
In regards to DX10, no. Currently non of the cards are DX10 compatible. Also, I would hesitate to purchase anything that claims it is DX10 until Vista and DX10 come out.
I am too waiting for Vista to release before upgrading anything. Patience my friend, wait a bit, otherwise you'll be purchasing another $550 card in 8 - 12 months.

both AMD and Intel are supposedly having a major reduction in prices for their dual core CPU lines later this month... But many of the current motherboards for them do not yet mention whether or not they will have Vista-compatible drivers... and since vista pretty much kicks the whole windows driver model upside down again, its real easy to end up with a paperweight if you intend to upgrade. :-?
I heard March 2007 at the earliest for vista... Just upgrade now. You can always sell the parts for 75% of what you paid later. That's what I always do.
dx10 cards may appear before vista as MS are pushing the vista betas pretty hard now.
