Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if anyone here knows what kind of information I would need in order to establish a reliable connection to a broadband internet provider. I'm wondering if it's possible to establish an internet connection with a provider without having to install any additional software apart from the modem drivers.

Information you need:
1) Your BT phone number.
2) Your credit or debit card details.
3) A firmly made decision on which ISP to go with.
If you go with an ISP that supplies a *router* instead of a *modem* (there is a difference) then you don't even need to install drivers, everything works through an ethernet port. Either your motherboard already has one, or you can buy and install one for about £10.
I was talking more about establishing a connection with an IP address provided by the ISP and the port number, I already have an ISP which is how I'm creating this topic. It was more a technical question. Sorry if that didn't come across. :\
You need no additional software!
You can just use plain windows to establish a connection.
Set your network to:
IP: 192.168.0.1
Submask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
ServerDNS: 192.168.0.1
Then use the Windows Network-Assistant.
There enter your complete id-number and password given from your ISP.
For most cases you get detailed instruction about this from your ISP. At least it is so for German ISPs.
