Can anyone suggest a good webhost?

I need to start creating a website for my project...it needs to have enough bandwidth to handle demo downloads, emails, etc...

I can't afford a really expensive webhost, so I need one with lower cost options, but I also need one that will be stable and dependable.

So if anyone can suggest a good one, I would really appreciate it. I haven't done this before so I'm not sure who's good and who's bad...

There has been few minor hich-ups during the last two+ years but they have fixed them quickly. Bandwidth is unlimited, which is kinda nice if you plan to have downloadable content.

www.zenwebhosting.co.uk - I've got one of their bronze packages.

www.dataflame.co.uk - I've got one of their NL750 packages.

Both are good. Zen do not support subdomains, Dataflame do.

I may cancel my Zen and move to Dataflame because I can host both sites from one Dataflame account. Zen really are great for bandwidth though. If you need a very responsive site, go with Zen. Dataflame are still quite fast, but I have more confidence in Zen's support.

Be forewarned that low-cost hosts that state you get extremely high bandwidth and disk storage do not usually deliver what they claim. For example, almost all hosts costing under $10 per month but claiming you get hundreds of Gb transfer per month, if you even come within a fraction of their stated bandwidth usage you'll either get
1 - inability to even come close to that transfer rate without getting 'service unavailable' messages to a lot of visitors
or
2- your site physically shut down by the host, and told by them that you need to move the site to a dedicated server.

I'm not saying that these hosts with extremely low prices and outrageous claims aren't ok for a really basic site (often they are), but if you add a busy forum, podcast, or something else resource-intensive you'll soon be looking for another host.

I've gone through quite a few hosts for my own domains and customers' domains over the years, and here are my top 3 recommendations that won't break the bank but give top-notch hosting and superb support:

While that is true of many low-price hosts, it's not true of all. Specifically, it's not true of PowWeb who have very specific terms of service detailing what your site can and cannot do, and I'm personally running up a huge amount of bandwidth on two of their sites. Not only do I get uninterrupted service, I generally get people telling me that the downloads are very fast.

I have been using powweb for years. The only issues I have seen are the mail servers seem to go down sometimes.

Another I have used that is good and priced well is Globat.

www.jaguarpc.com works for me. I like their control panel, and they have something called Fantastico that will install stuff for you easily (like Drupal, PHPBB, Mambo, WordPress, or a bunch of other things). They give you 6gb of space, and a fair amount of transfer for like $8/month if you prepay.
