Need host for free texture pack

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Need host for free texture pack

Hey all,

I'm about to give away 500+ textures free, but I don't want to pay for hosting. Not sure on the file size yet, possibly 200megs or so.

Does anyone know of a company that would host them, and they could put up some banners or something to get some revenue to cover b/w costs?

No popup hell or 'click 10 times for download link' types, something unobtrusive.

Cheers
Tom

If it were me and I'd gone to all that trouble and nobody bought it for the price you were asking (which wasn't a lot by any stretch of the imagination), I'd sooner bin the lot than give it all away for free.

But that's just me.

The guy I host for might do it... if you don't expect that many downloads... provided we get a banner and the ability to use the textures ourselves for anything we want.

They're 100% free, but we do have 3 conditions on commercial use:

1: We're notified of their use in a commercial game

2: Where appropriate, we (my brother and I) can use a screenie of them in use for advertising/C.V e.t.c

3: We get a credit.

We will have a PayPal donate button on our site soon for anyone that wishes to do so.

Gfk: Yup, we've had no success selling them, but rather than say 'F U' and bin them, I'd prefer to see them used.

It's been an enjoyable experience taking them and I got to spend quality time with my bro :P So at the end of the day, I'm a happy camper!

p.s These are slightly lower res than the CD. A mistake on my part was to not scale them suitable for games use. In fact, some of them were too high res. Most are now 512x512 & 256x256.

Here, http://www.megaupload.com/ ,pretty easy and good, I can host a mirror for it on my space if I downloaded it.

Could you show a few sample ?

Tom, while thats very generous of you I have to agree with GfK.

If you go down this free route after not getting any sales, then the next time you release something, even if its AAA quality, then people will remember "If I hold out for a while, Tom will release it for free" and you'll definately loose sales.

Why not give away 10 samples free (10 is a good taster - 500 is crazy) and charge for the full pack. It seems an awful waste of your time and effort.

That's a shame man...

It's no big deal, honestly :)

991 textures down to 99meg!

I'll do a news item when they're online.

Tom: i can host them. Let me know if you are intrested.

I think you're giving up waaaaay too soon, personally. Sometimes it can take months or years before things take off and then the money suddenly starts coming in.

But as you say, they're your textures and if you wanna give em away, you can. At least now I know why you never responded when I asked you if you wanted some free advertising for em ;)

Well, this could work out okay.

More people will download them for free. Then those who do use any of the textures commercially will pay to do so.

Anyone breaking this rule can be sorted out.

Personally, I had no use for the texture pack as I am focusing on fantasy RPG.

Tom... Also post in this topic when they are online somewhere... I might miss it otherwise.

Not always true. To download them and hold his email address and give him a heavy donation if I choose to use them in a comercial project (down the road) is much more efficient to me rather than having to search for that sort of media when I need it (and not finding his site, or having him give up and bin them just because the world is harsh).

If I needed the media now, I would pay for it. Granted there are some who wouldn't, however we all know how hard it is to get good artwork. I pay for others hard work as I would hope they would for mine.

Stick a paypal donate button on the page and make them donateware, cos some people like me actually do donate cos I often feel grateful and like to pay my way.

Are they up yet ?

The donate thing is a good idea.

Tom, I'll host you for free.

I use www.fdfd.ws for my subdomain hosting. Email me if you're interested. I'll give you the subdomain of your choice (example.fdfd.ws) and host your site and textures. You won't need to put up a banner or any sort of advertisement for me. I've never really hosted a site for someone before, but I have the extra bandwidth and space to do so. As long as it's helping the community, I'm all for it.

By the way, before anyone asks, I chose that domain name because of its simplicity and size ;)
