I wasn't happy with how my 3D models looked when I did close up 'scenes' of them, and I'm not an incredibly detailed texture mapper, but I found that I could make some good arty images by taking 3D rendered images, and applying art effects to them in Corel Photopaint (or Adobe Photoshop).
I liked the effect, so I'm thinking of making all the loading screens, character portraits, and any other static 2D imagery will be in a 'painted' style instead of going with straight 3D rendered art for my game.
As you might have noted from the image, I'm making a mecha style game called MAU Invasion. This shows four of the MAU war machines in my game.
