Man, if things just couldn't get any worse, now Microsoft's Peter Moore speaks out against backwards compatibility in gaming consoles. This doesn't turn me on at all, nor will it stop me from picking up some GameCube titles to play along side the Wii titles on the Wii. This shouldn't stop those who paid $600 for the PS3 to play PS1 and PS2 games, either. Who does this guy think he is?! Here's the article:

Peter Moore Tells You How to Feel
Posted by dvinson - Thursday, June 01, 2006 6:09 PM

Let's gather around the fire with the talking stick for a minute and share our feelings on the Xbox 360.

Peter Moore, would you care to go first?

"Nobody cares about backwards compatability."

Ouch. Peter Moore from Microsoft is trying to oppress you. He's trying to steal your right to feel. Too bad we all know that backwards compatability is a big part of what makes a gaming system appealing to a wide array of gamers, not to mention making it more fiscally responsible.

Oh Peter, what have you done?

Kotaku: Moore: Gamers Don't Care About Backward Compatibility

This just completely makes me furious to know this. Man, Micro$oft at their best again... First the motion controllers, now the backwards compatibility. Come on, M$, can't you guys understand that there ARE people that care about this stuff?!

Let's just hope this won't turn down the indie devs, too... There are plenty of those who wish to design games for the current gen, in order to play the games on the next-gen consoles at a lower price point.

That's about as bad as the Sony execs claiming they didn't rip-off Nintendo's motion-sensing-in-controller idea.

Regarding backward compat., that's a big thing for me, more-so if I ever were to buy a 360 as I never owned an Xbox beforehand, which would have opened up more possible sales for them since that system did have some exclusive gems.

Q. How many microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. None, they just declare darkness the new industry standard

Seriously, Microsoft pretty much has to downplay legacy support -- thanks to the big change in architecture between the XBox and the XBos 360, in many cases the current version simply isn't powerful enough to do a software emulation of the previous platform, even if they wanted to. Solution: simply declare it "not interesting"

And that's not going to change -- Microsoft has a major track record of "knowing what's best for you", all evidence to the contrary be damned.

Plumb straight. After all, Win XP turned down games written for Win 98 and Win 95, even tho there IS a feature that lets you emulate the older platforms. Somehow I think this is a reason why Mr. Gate$ is the richest man in the world. He's the one who forces you to buy the new stuff, and get rid of the old. How about the ones who want to KEEP what they have, and play the old games along side the new?! They're right, this IS a very oppressing statement. Typical Micro$oft, that's all I can say...

regular xbox games will or will not work on a 360?

Backwards compatibility is the best feature known to a computer. Without emulators the past (and true classics) would not be preserved.

I don't think backwards compatibility is worth the time and effort and see Microsofts point. They have nearly 300 old games working now.

Thats a large chunk of the old Xbox games, and when you consider how many people actualy play old games, and how many do actualy work. I'm not sure what the big deal is.

I think getting what they did up and running was quite a feat, and there are very few good games that havent made it on the compatibility list.

Here's a list of games that do work:

Yeah, that may be true for Microsoft. However, for those who own either of the two upcoming next-gens, they most certainly would like to play games from Nintendo's past, or play their old Sony games from the original PSX 10 years ago to the last PS2 game released before launching the PS3. Sony'd not be the same without their backwards compatibility, neither would Nintendo.

Nintendo's probably a bit generous with GameCube compatibility. For the cart games, tho, you can only download from the Virtual Console... However, was the Wii supposed to have TRUE backwards compatibility to the old "Purple Lunch Box", or would Nintendo learn from Microsoft on this?

What, XBox had decent games that aren't available on PC anyway?

NO, don't worry Pickles.. the only Xbox game that was any good not to be released on the PC was halo 2.... don't worry.

There were quite a few good Xbox games that took a year or so to come out on the PC.

One of my favourites Jade Empire, is coming out soon. But I had it on Xbox a year or so ago. Some other good games that were out an age before being ported to the PC were.

KOTOR, Fable, Splinter cell, Full spectrum warrior, Riddick.

And the Xbox versions tender to play better anyway. In my opinion Halo is one of the more boring Xbox franchises. There are a lot of better games out there.

The games that most people like on PS2 usualy come out on the PC eventualy too.

If you think that, I suspect you don't have a very good idea of what games most people liked on the PS2 ;)

I don't believe I own a single PS2 game which came out on PC at all, and I own a LOT of PS2 games. I doubt I'm the model of your average PS2 gamer, but at the same time many of the games in my collection were huge sellers, so I'm not completely atypical either.

The ability to play all these games ( albeit probably having to buy a US import to achieve it ) is a huge benefit of buying a PS3. Not that I wouldn't buy one otherwise, but it makes it a lot more likely.

Seeing that list of XBox games that will play on XBox360 just stopped me from buying one ( for the second time in six weeks ) because the only three XBox games I might actually have wanted to play are not on it. ( EDITED TO MAKE SENSE )

Project Gotham Racing 2 is not compatible with Xbox360. It is now looking likely that it never will be.

Glad I kept my original Xbox. I need to get a VGA cable for it now because I got rid of my TV.

That's quote is a ridiculous thing to say. I love retro.

Why sure, after all, Sony's got their VAIO lineup, too, so it's obvious that Sony would support any PC application after their PS2 lineup. So, for a VAIO PC to run a PS2 lineup, let's see where that would go...

Its just business - case in point is Worms. You'll notice that there are TWO 3D worms titles that are backward compatible on the 360. Most people agree that 2D Worms was the best, and the 360 could EASILY run a 2D game from 5 years ago, so why is it not compatible?

Answer: The makers of Worms have been in talks with the XBox Live people to make a downloadable version of Worms 2D for Live. And nobody would buy it if they could just use the DVD they already had or pick up a second-hand copy for £5.

I imagine we'll see more and more old XBox games being 're-released' on Live, and mysteriously being omitted from the backward compatible list.

As for the arguement that the 360 isn't powerful enough to emulate hardware for old games - frankly that's just a (very dodgy) excuse. If it can run stuff like Halo 2 and Need For Speed (which it can) then that excuse is already void :/

Skitchy nailed it on the head. It's all about business so they can sell those games again over Xbox Live.

yeah, I was just thinking of Final famtasy, MGS and GTA games that usualy come out for PC too. I don't like many PS2 games though. Which is why I never got one.

My main reason for getting the first Xbox was to get PC like games on a console with better graphics than a mid range PC. And it did that really well.

As a matter of fact, I may just trade up my XBox for a GameCube (as a placeholder until the Wii becomes available, of course). Having a GameCube library built up for the Wii would make things better, because, let's face it, the Wii launch library may be adequate, but most people may want to start by mixing and matching their game libraries from the current and next-gen consoles...

none of the Ps2 Square then Square-Enix games came out on the PC... the only 2 I can think of were FF7 and FF8... which were terrible on the PC and were just direct ports by some other company...

GTA isn't a playstation exclusive so it doesn't count...

The great games from Xbox all came out on the PC... the only great Ps2 game I can think of to come out on the PC were the redfactions... all the others were cross platform to begin with...

Well, I have Everquest II for PC, and that was made by Sony, and it was on the PS2 as well. Seems like that's something to consider about Sony being in the PC market.

I don't think I understand you. Are you suggesting that Sony ported Everquest 2 from PS2 to PC because they wanted to increase sales of Sony Vaio's?

Well, not too sure. I just picked EverQuest II up from a garage sale, and it was made for the PC. I was surprised to see that Sony did a game for something outside of the PlayStation series. Well, if Sony can do it, Nintendo may as well even consider doing something for the PC, who knows?

Wii

Yeah... As I said, I have my XBox packed and ready to trade for the GameCube. I may be making a risky move, but at least I can get a game library built up for the Wii... Only makes sense to make sure that I have something to make the Wii run when Nintendo makes things official. After all, since I own Nintendo handhelds, I may as well have a home console to link them up to for the meantime, as well as some decent games that I can play around with for starters. That'll be my message to how Microsoft has been doing things.

I don't have any reason to buy Xbox 360, no games I like on it, they just gave me one more reason not to buy it.

Only reason I would buy the PS3 is for the big list of games it will have, only one I specifically want is the next Metal Gear (and possibly next GTA).

I have everything to look forward on the Wii.

I was surprised to see that Sony did a game for something outside of the PlayStation series.

If you ask me, Sony wanted an MMO game of their own, but there was no way the PSX could handle such a thing, more-so since the device didn't even have networking capabilities, so they slapped it onto the PC and it has been there ever since, including its sequel.

Regarding PS2 MMOs though, seems Square-Enix has that entire genre dominated with Final Fantasy XI (which I been addicted to for the last 2 years, /sigh), not even Sonys own Everquest:Adventures did too well, akthough FFXI isn't exclusive to the PS2.

Nintendo may as well even consider doing something for the PC, who knows?

That would go against Nintendo's way, which is keeping things simple, PC "system requirements" would kill that.

Personally after reading that backward compatability with their new os is available at a premium in the most expensive version.

Somehow his opinion doesnt surprise me.

Scary

IIRC, it's because the binaries on the original xbox CD aren't compatible, they'll download an updated version and write it to the HD instead... The HD comes with the premium version, so you're out of luck if you don't have it.
