If you could get your hands on a engine from a "big" game, what would it be?
Major Game Engines
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Major Game Engines Anygame powered by Unreal3.0, cause it costs too much for us bedroom coders to get their paws on.
nothing cos probably I need a "big" team to populate it with media and levels.
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Anything I can do I can do with what's available to me right now. I wouldn't mind doing my game with the Source engine though.
The engine Nippon Ichi uses for their Tactical RPGs
They seem to just build on the same engine or at least the same rules and basic design from game to game. I'm sure by now it is very robust and could be used easily to make nearly any tactical RPG with custom stats and skills... I can't imagine they hard code the skills, so I assume it would be a reasonable expectation to be able to make it use any system I can think up.

Max3D.
I want GameBench :/
I hope you're joking...
Project Offset of course :) just to play with thier shader system :)
Renderware. If I had the money for one of these engines, I wouldn't want to waste it on anything unproven, and Renderware is about as proven as they get, and one of the most versatile to boot.
Jupiter is my vote..
Dark Basic Pro
Wait a minute.....what?

The various algorithms from a game like Spore, of course :)
Lots that could be improved on there, and it's actually possible for a small developer to make use of it.
(Since it is not totally oriented towards graphics).

noel i have a old gamebench zip here do u like it ?
@panno
I would also like to have it please. I once downloaded all the versions and deleted them after the project was stopped but as noel i miss gamebeanch somehow. It was really promising...

Nah, it was unfinished at the time so it's not really worth using now. Thanks, though.

Blitz3D. The gameplay of the original wasnt for your layman, but the engine is solid and quite versatile.
some one ought to shoot kalisme for even joking about such things, profanity shall not be permitted in this forum, you too Neuro ;)
lol @ Red

If I had the money for some of those really, really expensive engines I'd go straight to Bahamas or somewhere similar and would not care about programming at all... ;-)
Barney
Barney
... the beta version would do fine :)
Judgeing by the results, I would say the beta version is still a long way off.I'm sure Barney has a point about spending half a million dollars on something more exciteing than a game engine.

Which is beside the point, really, since the original question had to do only with what engine you would get, not how you got it.
someone tell Becks that Blitz3D is a programming language, and not a game engine...
:)

:)

Blitz3D is a game engine with a programming language layered on top of it.
I don't know why anyone wiould wnat to get their hands on Renderware cause it sucks.
Unreal engine 3 is great apart from very poor support for alpha blending

I've been hearing that a lot lately.
Yeah I heard it from our dev team who worked on Cold Winter.
They had a 'lot' of problems with it.
Funny though , after posting this I was playing jak3 which was develped on Renderware 3 and that IMHO is a great game.

Well it may be unpleasant to work with ( I wouldn't have a clue, obviously! ) but it's sure been used on a lot of good and successful games across a wide variety of platforms.
I remember being particularly impressed with how it handled Broken Sword 3. Broken Sword 3 wasn't using tons of shaders and every special effect known to man, it was just relying on the quality of the artwork and the renderer, and I felt Renderware just made it look very clean and smooth. Seemed to be pretty bug-free too, since I recall no patches being required.

broken sword 3 worked on my old P2 400 fairly well too, which impressed me.
Some of my ex co workers are using renderware with a custom 3DS Max art pipeline, and they really like it. The engine we used before that has a Max and Maya pipeline that was much like B3D pipeline only with some shader support, and that was good and the renderware one is supposed to be better.
The engine used for the kate archer games isn't bad and one of the cheaper commercial engines out there. No One Lives for ever series. Monolith engine or whatever its called.
Costs $10k for a commercial license. Not bad really. Cheaper than Torque for Xbox live indie games, and a much better engine too.
Their next gen engine is the one used for FEAR.
