Warning: More motivational blurb and a bit of advertising :)
------------------------------------------------------------
So you developed this great game and the mainstream distis won't touch it? Been there? Got the T-Shirt? I have! Don't be dismayed, there are other, and more lucrative ways to get your game out there.
Introducing MasterKick...
Barriers to entry :
1) Portals love playing it but they don't want it.
2) People love playing it but won't buy it.
Solution :
Package as a free to play web game and generate revenues via :
1) Licensing to "Free 2 Play" sites. (http://www.miniclip.com/masterkick/masterkick.php)
2) Allow other sites to have a version of the game for no fee and collect advertising revenues.(http://www.b92.net/sport/mundijal2006/)
3) Release the game at the right time, like just before the world cup :)
Technology requirements
1) Existing code - you have this already
2) igLoader

Job done!
And the HalfLife2 Episode I has gone golden and starts even before - 1st June.

What about games that will weigh in around 2GB (compressed)?
doh, what do you think ;-) Wait 5 years until the Internet is *much* better. OR hugely optimise the game and media .. but you know this anyway.
In 5 years i do expect to have some devtools/players with more procedural concepts than today - hopefully!
What on earth is Taumel talking about? I'm not talking about internet distribution I talking about alternative license models !?!?!?
The example above clearly demonstrates that you can earn a lot of money by not actually selling the game to the player.
Anyway I'm going on holiday now, you can argue amongst yourselves whilst I spend the "fruits of my labours". Cya.
Quite simple: You were refering to the soccer wm on the 9. June and i said that there is another major event for a lot of gamers which is the release of the HalfLife2 Addon on the 1. June... :O)
taumel: To be fair I never knew what the hell you were on about too ;-p
Tim: Have a good one. Anywhere nice?
Bit OT.
Hey Tim, regarding your igLoader (using 2.0.0.2 here), it seems to want to crash alot on me in Firefox v1.5.0.3 when it comes to closing a current loaded game (seems to be regardless of whether its finished loading or not) and open another...
Even the link to the miniclip site featuring the game you're using as an example crashes it near 100% of the time, or display a black screen with music playing, rather then the loader, although I feel that has something to do on their side and not yours...
On another note, yer webbed version of GEOM doesn't want to embed itself into the window, and for some reason it likes to freeze up my address bar at random, have yet to reproduce that easily though.
Just a heads-up, I want igLoader to be the best it can be, it deserves the praise its been receiving.
(that and so other sites can quit with the freaking IE-only ActiveX crap for online-games)
[EDIT] Just realied that igLoader adds the game to your start-button menu, anychance to give the user the option to do so and have it off by default? It just bugs me when I get stuff added without prior-warning & user-consent, let alone the option to clear away the files when said game is done playing with.
Also unsure if you're already aware, but when you uninstall from the start-button menu, it still leaves a folder of the game name, but with empty content inside, rather then deleting the entire menu folder as I was expecting. [/EDIT]
Regarding the topic, it all seems built-upon advertising revenue, with the igLoader plugin, the ads only display during the loading no? Doesn't look like it'd generate much renevue unless 1000's were playing it, not to mention the cost of bandwidth required to host it for 1000's to play....unless you got a system already setup for this I aint quite picking up?
Genexi2: I have pretty much the same problems with some of the games on the Cloverleaf site (black screens + music, and no embedding of some games). I've told Tim about it but he blames my PC ;-)
