Hiya, I've got to bring my sample library up to date as most of them are 8-bit ones from my Amiga :-D Anyway, I wondered if anyone has any links to free royalty-free for commercial use trance samples. I mean drums, loops, bass, strings, lead, analogue stuff etc, you know what I mean. I could google forever but that will take ages and I'm sure some of you have some great links. I guess I'm willing to pay a small amount if you can really recommend some non-free ones. Thanks loads in advance.
Free Trance Samples?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Free Trance Samples? only ones i know of are at http://www.joor.com/downloads/
no idea if they're royalty free. i would imagine they are, but email him for a definate answer. i know for a fact that a lot of them were not created by him (jungle samples for example... amen break, etc).

I don't really use samples, I make my own, Well, on occasion I use drum samples! :)
What purpose are they for? MOD or full on PCM?

Thanks markd, I'll check it out.
Cyg: They are for renoise which is modules but I may end up rendering them as Wavs and then convert to ogg for games.
Basically I was well into to tracking years ago, made nearly 250 mods in total. But I stopped making stuff (except for the odd thing) years ago because I lacked the fancy samples and equipment to get the production values high enough. Now with downloadable software able to cram in tons of effects, and loads of high quality samples, I'm really keen to give it a go again, I almost feel it's my true calling :-)
Played with renoise for ages last night. It works just like the old trackers but has so much more in. It's very nice. May well buy it if fruityloops isn't better. So, anyway I just downloaded the fruityloops demo. I see the basic version is $49 but you can't download any of the samples from the linked site. So you have to get the $99 dollar version to be able to get those samples, but it might be worth it for 7Gigs worth (unzipped). Also I notice that if you want an integrated wav editor you have to get the producer version for $149 dollars. I could use an external wav editor of course. However, also that version has ASIO-in support which I'll need if I want to play my guitar in whilst listening to playback; I think that's what it means doesn't it? What I'm wondering is if I get the $99 version, if you can pay an upgrade fee late rather than the full price, I'm sure you must be able to.
Anyway Cyg how do you find fruityloops? I've heard good stuff about it. It's probably a good starting point for me though. It's my birthday soon (June 11) and so I might get a midi keyboard (never ended up getting one a while ago when I started that thread) and get stuck in :-)

I found fruityloops when it was in its baby years (Version 2.0 which was essentially just a drum machine and SimSynth sample player!) it came free with Sonar XL (The first release of Cakewalk which then named Sonar.) so I played about with it and had some fun, and then bought it. At the time the main programmer was pretty much just an Indie like us :)
yes, Asio does mean you can record whilst playing, at low latency, but your card has to have drivers for it.
Asio4all to the rescue, these drivers work with your normal sound card drivers to deliver the same features.

It's so incredibly easy to use it's pathetic. I use it exclusively.
For trance Fruityloops is cool if you're an automation junky. I find it a bit bloated graphically since I like things simple and easy to access... which is where Tracktion shines like a one-faceted diamond :).
If you plan on recording audio with Fruityloops then you're in for a headache.
Of course you could always spring for Ableton Live and be set for life, but it's 500 dollars. Yipe!

Not really, I never had any issues recording audio with Fruityloops :)
i was talking to the OP. there's a steep learning curve with fruityloops, wouldn't you agree?

HMm, For me, everything in Fruityloops just makes sense. You might be right though! I have been there since day one. :)
But if i'm honest, the way you record in Fruity is probrably the only part that I didn't pick up first time.
I'd have thought my soundblaster came with ASIO install, but I'll check it out. Thanks.
I just made a mini ogg and emailed it to ya Cyg! (home address)
markd: OK thanks. So that's the one you used for that cool track you posted the other day? So you think recording audio ain't so good in fruity hey? Well I could try it in Renoise.
Anyway to summarise my findings, Renoise is easy to use and the tracker format is familiar to me. Fruity seems to be a bit harder to find stuff and get it doing what I want, but that's cos I'm unfamiliar with it. I DO really like the step sequencer (like from 303s and Rebirth etc) and the piano roll, as they make it visually easier to see whats going on than a tracker I think.

Markd: I just checked out the samples in the link but unfortunately they are all samples of muisc rather than instruments (which is waht I'm after). Also I recognise some of them, like some are from a Jean Michel Jarre remix album! [edit] OK, founds some instruments in the Synth section. [edit] OK found some great drums too. thanks! I just need to filter/sort them a bit into useable ones.
haha you're welcome :)
the only real way to produce trance is with good VSTi's:
z3ta+
Vanguard
Atmosphere
Pro52
Adventus (wow)
I just wish there was an a good all-around trance vsti.
Anyway, find you some good kicks, hi-hats, etc and grab a good VSTi and you're in there.

I can send you my standard drum samples if you wish :)
I seem to use the same Kick drum all the time no matter what :)

Mard: Thanks! What's the difference between those VSTis and the DSPs (reverbs, distortion, filters etc) in Renoise?
Cyg: Yeah thanks dude. Where did yours come from? (as in are they above board, I want to be careful about what I use).

I have never touched Renoise so I have no idea what it's like. There's a difference though. VST instruments (VSTi) and effects (VST) are two separate things. A VSTi is a playable instrument like an emulated Roland Synth, a virtual guitar, a bass guitar, etc. A VST is just an effect like reverb, chorus, distortion, stereo widener, etc and are applied to a sound.
You could apply a VST effect like chorus to a VSTi piano. You can also apply VST effects to regular audio samples or in real time.
DirectX instruments and effects are similar, but heh... DirectX? Nooooo thanks.
You with me?
VSTi -> VST effect -> speakers
or
Kick drum sample -> VST effect -> speakers

Got it thanks so VST is like DSP.
if Renoise uses the same type of effects (DSP) that Buzz uses, then you're in luck. Fruityloops has a Buzz effects wrapper.
Long live FastTracker2!
