FreeBASIC?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/FreeBASIC?
Actually I know this for a while but never looked at it as the package didn't include an IDE, but rediscover it again I found it pretty powerful.
It's free and opensourced, and seems to be able to use many 3rd party libraries.
Go
http://www.freebasic.net/ to get it.
Anyone ever tried it? Looks pretty capable for writing a app/game although the version number is still very low.
It's really good, and there is an ide package for it called fbide (mainly for windows). It's self extracting and installs just about anything you need. The compiler uses a QBasic like syntax and supports higher screen modes, c libraries (i.e. Open GL, Open AL, SDL, etc.), pointers, and more. While it's still in its infancy it's really come a long way, and eventually the author plans to move it to the gcc backend to support oop and c++ libraries. And even though it can't beat Blitz in terms of writting games, I do think it's going to become a very powerful BASIC.
It's nice, I'm not a fan of the older style of BASIC syntax though.
i won't look at it because it has the word free
in it's name. say you wroted something, then you
showed it to sum people, then they will ask you,
"what langauge did you write it in," and you say
freebasic then they will laugh at you.
no thanks, unless he changed the name.
That is a horrible reason to not look at it. You're already using Blitz, don't you think you sound just as stupid saying "I wrote it using Blitz3D/Plus/Max?"
So "Free" make it sounds terrible, "BASIC" make it sounds even worse...
Well actually not that bad, most of it's components work well, syntax is 99% QB, but the libs are pretty up to date.
Someone has written a irrlicht wrapper for it
http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12416The speed is quite fast.
:)
I agree. Never ever tell anybody you did it using BASIC. They turn around and walk away as if you asked them for some cash.
If your product is really good then you may say you're not allowed to talk about the tools in use.
Freebasic is nice, although far away from Blitz3D. Irrlicht sounds good, but I doubt it's easy to set up and use. However, if I had no Bitz3D then I'd probably use it.
Anyone that cares what language a program was written in is simply an idiot... An elite noob snob... and probably incapable of completing a program without copying from PLANET SOURCE CODE or the like!

Many of the elite snobs with talent also behave that way.

well if you're doing a job and looking to get paid
telling your client you used BASIC sounds a bit
unprofessional, like as if you can't program in
anything else, like c or c++. and if you tell them
it's free it's worse because it suggests you are
a novice in programming who hasn't bought any
tools, etc.
Blitzplus/3d/max doesn't sound half as bad as
freebasic does.
