Best time of day for programming
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Best time of day for programming
Hello.
Its just coming up to 5am, Thursday morning.
I've been working on a little game in Blitzmax for about three weeks now but progress has been slow(ish) due to numerous daytime distractions; television, visitors, MSN, other stuff to do etc...
So I thought I'd go back to doing it the way I did "in the old days". I've just finished for the night and I've managed to get tons of work done in the last six hours or so - game is really beginning to take shape.
My brain is spinning and I'm wide awake. Probably won't bother going to bed now.
What do you find is your best time of day (or night) for programming?
Deffinately 1:00-3:00 in the morning for me, I'm more awake then than ever. When it gets to 5:00 AM I dicide I just won't go to bed, but by around 9:00 I get really tired and go to bed anyways. That's how bad sleeping patterns are started..
The night before its due to be completed of course :)
Between 9am and 5pm. I used to do that whole burning the midnight oil thing, but realized I was making too many stupid errors because I was tired. A caffine rush may keep you from falling at sleep at the keyboard, but it's not going to do wonders for your logical deduction skills, in my experience.
I think OD'ing on caffeine to stay awake is a pretty bad idea, which is why I don't do it. Only drink water at this time of day.
If I was tired, I'd go to sleep. But i'm not, so I won't.
Same as FlameDuck.
I just naturally stay awake at night ... that's when I get my energy. Back when we did Aerial Antics there were several times that I stayed awake all night till 10 - 1lAM and then went to sleep woke up at night and did it again. I still stay up nights now but not usually till 10AM etc... last week I was working on Beach Ball Break and I'd stay up till about 6AM and then hit the sack.
Don't know if it's the best time ... but apparently John Carmack keeps a 4PM - 4AM schedule.
I'm pretty good in the middle of the night (also no interruptions) but tiredness can mean silly mistakes. My best and fastest code (if I'm not ask to do childcare) is between 4pm and 7pm.
Best times for me are between 11pm up till 2pm.
The rest of the day seems to be spoiled by that usual afternoon depression and with too many distractions, friends ringing up and TV that occurs in the evenings.
I can't focus during the day. Too much sunlight coming in around the blinds. Makes me restless. I do my best work at night between 9pm to 6am.
Should it really be any wonder, then, why you're seemingly incapable of figuring out how to use OOP features?
Life begins when the rest of the family goes to bed.
Sadly, after a full day of 'day job', I often want to go to bed about then too - hence the remarkable lack of productivity.
Still, when I'm awake, the post-9pm shift I find to be amazingly productive.
between 9pm - 7am....
I usud to program at nights, but now i mostly don't have either time or no mood for it. But when the time and mood is correct i can do very "amazing" things.
7pm - 9:30pm (after getting home from work, cooking myself some dinner feeding the cat etc.)
The worst time for me to program is between 6:30am and 7:30am before work - especially if I make a mistake and have to wait until that evening to fix it.
If you want the best of both day and night there was some special sleeping pattern thing where you take short naps throughout the day so you can be awake for most of it. It might be dangerous though and i think it takes a while to get into.
22:00 to 08:00 is the most productive time for me.
21:00 - 0:00 for me
I seem to be at my most clear thinking/productive whenever there's something else I should be doing or just before I have to leave for an appointment! 8o/
I've done the naps thing ... because my other business is during the day. I end up sleeping from like 3 or 4 AM till 8 or 9 and then from 5PM to about 11PM.
6am to 2 or 3 the next morning... it consumes what lil life i have left... i need to get this done or i'm gonna turn into a pumpkin soon... everything else is secondary right now...

Definitely night time for me. Between 10pm to 4-5 am. I dunno what it is about the night, but it just puts me in my zone..
Noel, I don't know why you've got a hair across your ass as of late, but you're not disagreeing with me anymore, you're just being a dick for the sake of being a dick. Cut it out. If you can't learn to discuss things with people that you disagree with without resprting to personal insults you're not going to get very far in this industry.
> you're just being a dick for the sake of being a dick
And you've only just noticed this behaviour? Come on swifty get with the program. :)
I think they should ban Noel and ENAY. :)
Can't you people just stop it?? :/ You obviously hate each other, and that's just fine, but why do you go out of your way to derail every thread?? Oh and thats a rhetorical question - I honestly don't care why you do it. If you must bitch at each other constantly, do it by email because nobody here cares.
Enay:
He's only done it twice to me, so no I haven't noticed.
Gfk:
Can't you people just stop it?? :/ You obviously hate each other
Actually, it's not "obvious" because it's not the case at all. I don't hate Noel, and I was a bit surprised yesterday when he posted a nasty reply to one of my posts. I did recall at that point that one of our discussions about OOP got heated, but I forgot about it quickly enough. I guess Noel hasn't.
Also bitch at eachother constantly? I think I've talked to Noel a total of three times in the last month. If it's been more I honestly don't remember. I really don't pay attention to who I'm arguing with.
Noel became my enemy a long time ago. He has this knack.
> I think they should ban Noel and ENAY.
Why ENAY?
I'm only joking. I put a smiley at the end of my last post. :)
... but I've forgiven him (Noel) as forgiveness is GOOD!
10PM - 3AM for me. Makes it a lot easier to concentrate on things without a three-year-old running around.
"Tomorrow" ... obviously ;-)
c'mon you all... hugs and kisses all around...
DO IT!!!
:)

I get drained from work during the day (I work on building sites), I work from 7.00am till 5pm, and having to carry and fix 70+ plaster boards, or floating and/or skimming a target of 100m2 a day... it takes it out of you!
Then the girlfriend comes into the equation, sadly, that's a couple of hours lost programming a day (If your reading this snugz... I'm, erm.. kiddin') :/
So after all that, I only usually get time at around 10-11.30pm a night, which is nothing. And I cannot physically be arsed to do anymore!
Shame....
