http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12726642/site/newsweek/?GT1=8199An interesting read on John Carmack's latest project on the cel-phone.....
Good stuff! I'm actually thinking about doing a mobile title once I finish my current PC casual game.
good to hear carmark talking about something other than graphics for once.
He has been pissing me off lately.
It shows you, that when he is backed into a corner where he can't just rely on eye-candy he still can make a good game.
Hey! I also love cel-phone gamming.
That John Carmack seems to have an opinion on everything these days.
Here's his revolutionry idea to make a new textureing system:

Well, the gameplay really is intertwined with the presentation. I’ve never pursued a technology that I thought would negatively impact gameplay. It’s always in the context of “how will this technology improve the game?” And it is true that I’m not the final arbiter of what’s necessarily going to make our games fun, gameplay-wise. I don’t necessarily consider myself representative of our target market. And the game play decisions are generally now made by Tim.
But I do still care about making sure that the technology that I help provide, which is sort of the canvas that everything is painted on, is something that will only have positive improvements to the whole game play experience. So I am focused more and more narrowly now, than I used to be, on the graphics technology and my little aspect of this. It’s true that I used to write essentially all of the code for everything. But as the demands of the technology have improved we have to have more and more people and it gets more and more specialized. So I’ve sort of retrenched into the area where I have the most to offer and I put in the time that I can to it.
This is the most honest thing Carmack has ever said.
When has Carmack not been honest? Or even less than honest? He's always been a straight shooter from what I've seen.
I hear he's really a robot....can anyone confirm?
He is is a nice nerd.
http://www.g4tv.com/pile_player.aspx?video_key=11274The interviewer loses him after 10 seconds.
heheh....yep, you can the interview guy has no idea what the hell John Carmack is talking about when he goes into cel-processing on the PS3....lol!
good stuff and insights though....
What I meant was that Carmack tends to talk out his ass about games, I remember him once saying something about how gameplay in the next gen is going to require great graphics and he used to say that his games would be better with the high level of graphics. It is nice to see that he finally kind of understands that great graphics don't a good game make, he is right, they don't really hurt the game if done well, but they don't make it any better.
I think they do make it better. Doom 3 was a lot better with the graphics options turned on ... aethetics are a part of life. Attractive architecture and beautiful foiliage in real life enhance it. The same holds true for games.
Good graphics are what catches the attention. Its also what drives a lot of the technology we have nowadays. So it does makes its better. You're more likely to play a game with better graphics than one with out it, wether or not the gameplay is that "good".
I disagree... I'm far more likely to play a game with great gameplay and crap graphics than the other way around.
And I hated Doom 3 even with the graphics all the way up, didn't make the same room over and over again any less boring.
Yeah, but what about compared to playing the same game with the graphics all the way down? I found that the graphics masked the mediocre gameplay quite well. With the graphics turned down it just wasn't the same experience.
on the contrary, turning the graphics all the way down is one of the keys to being an FPS god. It enables you to have a framerate edge over your opponent.
obviously, if you could have better graphics without making the system stutter or draging down the frame rate it would not effect the gameplay, and by that virtue, gameplay being equal, the graphics and sounds and such are what will make one -game- better than another... but this doesn't make the game better.
I perfer to turn the graphics down on most games I play, I also break the realism by turning the gamma all the way up so I actually can see what is going on. I don't need to be crippled in my ability to see a target for the sake of realism... nothing fun about that.
